Takemoto on why Peach isn’t playable in New Super Mario Bros. U

November 26th, 2012 Posted in News, Podcast Stories, Posted by Valay, Wii U

New Super Mario Bros. U features a few playable characters. You can control Mario, Luigi, Toad, and your very own Mii. Peach, however, is not playable.

Explaining the move, game director Masataka Takemoto said Peach wasn’t made available to players since she would likely have a different set of moves and animation. But in the New Super Mario Bros. series, the team wants all players to be on equal footing.

“In Super Mario Bros 2, Princess Peach had her own unique moves and animation. In this series, we want all the players to have the same moves and animations as Mario, and Princess Peach isn’t suited for that.”

Plus, she is normally the victim.

Well, it is time for them to revisit the style of Super Mario Bros. 2, yes? It would be nice to see a world like Subcon again.

Because different types of characters with different moves and animations would be horrible, right?

It’s not like they could make her an unlockable reward for collecting all of the star coins and beating the game. We all hate that kinda stuff, right?

In other words, they got lazy. Again. Don’t get me wrong, Peach makes a great captive, but they could have introduced a playable Daisy. Having half of the player select choices use identical sprites of different colors just seems really lazy. If they could make a different animation for Peach over 20 years ago in SMB 2, they could do so today. I bought this game but I don’t try to pretend it’s not a cookie-cutter “New” Super Mario Bros. title.

People need to stop asking them this question. I swear we hear it every time a new NSMB game comes out.

I don’t see the problem here with why she’s not playable. I’m not exactly clambering to play as Peach or anything, I’m just saying that their logic is flawed. She’s not playable because she handled differently in Super Mario Bros. 2? Does that mean Luigi still has his flutter jump then? No? Didn’t think so.

    What a dumb excuse.

Okay, if they want everyone to have the same moveset, how about including Wario and Waluigi, and maybe still include one Toad? There’s nothing saying all of the characters have to be playable at the same time, and this would give a little more variety.
