Ubisoft on making Rayman Legends multiplatform, game’s delay
February 7th, 2013 Posted in News, Podcast Stories, Posted by Valay, Wii URayman Legends is now officially a multiplatform game. Ubisoft and Nintendo had been promoting the title as a Wii U exclusive, but Ubisoft announced today that releases on the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 are planned as well.
Xavier Poix, managing director of Ubisoft’s French studios, explained the decision to IGN:
“When we saw all the comments when we announced the game would be focused on Wii U, all of the people that have both the PlayStation 3 and 360 were really disappointed,. So we thought it was making more sense to also bring the game to where it was originally from. That means Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3. So we decided to go for a multiplatform launch simultaneously.”
Some may consider Rayman Legends to be the definitive experience on Wii U. That version will maintain exclusive GamePad co-op play. The PS3/360 versions will be more similar to Rayman Origins.
According to Poix:
“It’s a different kind of experience if you have the Wii U. Obviously there will be cooperation on the PS3 and 360, but on the Wii U there is still this magic of having one player that can play on one system with a new experience and the other on the usual game pad. That stays a Wii U exclusive for sure, by definition.”
How exactly will Rayman Legends play on the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360? Poix wouldn’t offer any specific details, but did say:
“If they loved the Origins experience, it’s close to the same kind of feeling but with a level of immersion and brand new settings that haven’t been seen before. We have other features that I can’t disclose right now, but it’s really a brand new game. Even in terms of visuals, we built our own engine in terms of lighting, in terms of having 3D elements so you can have dragons that fly from far to go in your face and back. It’s a unique kind of 2D platforming experience.”
Last but not least, Poix said the following about Rayman Legends’ delay:
“…it’s really about the fans. It’s really about having a very interesting universe, a mix of craziness and poetry mixed all together. We are very happy that we can bring that to many, many Rayman fans and the more we can, the better.”

If the delay isn’t caused by the porting (and thus simultaneous multiplatform release) I’ll eat my shoe. Damn you, Ubi. And Nintendo for not being on the ball and losing another exclusive. I’m certainly not in a hurry to pick up a Wii U now.

It really makes no sense to me. Is the Wii U version simply not ready? If it is ready, it should be released, not 6 months later. I guess we don’t know the details, but if Ubi knew that doing all three versions would take longer, they shouldn’t have set a firm release date for Wii U. Really, really disappointing.

I was really looking forward to this game. Now I have to wait another six months? That is lame of them to take something special away from a brand new system and give it to everyone else.

This has got to be one of the stupidest choices I’ve ever seen a game company make. Ubisoft, if the game is already finished for Wii U, there’s NO NEED to delay it just because you now wanna release it for PS3/360 and you want a “simultaneous release”!
If the game is finished, release it now for Wii U and then release it later for the other consoles when the ports are done like other companies do. Don’t make Wii U owners pay for the desires of the owners of other consoles. I’m just completely disgusted by this decision. I bet the demo is gonna get removed from the eShop just like the 3DS demo of Rayman Origins was removed when the port was delayed. =w=

@KokiriHylian:
That’s a good point. Everyone download the demo before is disappears!

This sucks cause now there almost no Wii U games I need on the horizon.

It’s all about the money.

What the hell? Why can’t the Wii U have this to itself for a few months and then release it for the other consoles? C’mon, Ubisoft! C’mon, Nintendo! This is stupid!

Forst nintendo delays a lot of their first party games and now this!? This was the one game i thought i could count on, to come out before march. Get your act together ubisoft! Your better than this

As for why they would delay it on Wii U, probably marketing reasons? Now they only have to market it once on all platforms instead of separately, saves half the marketing costs. Of course, now they’re going up against GTA (if that isn’t delayed)…

I’d say the biggest reason they are bringing it is because they don’t trust that the Wii U version would fly off the shelves sales wise, but I doubt the 360/PS3 versions won’t either.

@Ron
I don’t see why it wouldn’t. It’s THE Rayman game that everyone’s been looking forward to.
