Rumor: More talk of Wii U games being cancelled, ports wanted but not bought, more

March 1st, 2013 Posted in Podcast Stories, Posted by Brian, Rumors, Wii U

Update: Turns out this is fake, guys. Seems that Hall does not exist given the photo found here.

Independent game developer Calvin Hall has published a new blog post about apparent Wii U-related rumblings from the D.I.C.E. Summit last month.

Hall echoes some of the previous talk we’ve heard – mainly that developers are saying Wii U projects “were being cancelled left and right”, including “a big multi-console project” from EA.

One Activision staffer allegedly said the following about sales disappointment for Call of Duty: Black Ops II and ports on Wii U:

“Activision didn’t expect much from Wii U sales of Black Ops 2, but they sure didn’t expect it to be that abysmal. Activision gave Wii U owners the best version of Blops 2 with Off TV features, and Nintendo fans didn’t support it. It’s easy for Nintendo fans to trash publishers for not giving them ports, but publishers have wisened up. They realize Nintendo fans are all talk. Nintendo fans are vocal with their mouths, but when it’s time to open their wallets, they’ll spend that $60 on New Super Mario Bros instead.”

The same employee said the following when asked about the thoughts of fellow employees he knows of from other publishers:

“There’s just no enthusiasm for it. The only reason publishers are still going to bring games to Wii U is because they don’t want to damage their relationship with Nintendo.”

Assuming these quotes are true, keep in mind that they don’t represent Activision’s feelings as a whole.

Wow! This is actually really offensive! Generalizing the Nintendo fans and telling us its our fault we didn’t buy their shitty cod game that we didn’t even ask for! Also, the WII U is a new system! Maybe you should have marketed it better since all the adds I saw just said xbox/ps3! Oh, and did we get the limited edition? Nope. We felt left out from the beginning and therefore did not care.

Nintendo games typically sell better on Nintendo consoles because..well they’re unavailable anywhere else and are the driving force behind Nintendo’s products.

The Wii U came out a bit over 3 months ago and I’m sure people investing in it weren’t doing so to play a game they could play on the other consoles. Even though the Wii U version of CoD: Black Ops 2 was the “best version”, I doubt anybody saving money for a Wii U did so to get a game they could have gotten without buying a new console.

Try offering a quality game that will actually draw people to getting a Wii U for that particular game, and then you can complain about abysmal sales if it happens.

That’s the real issue here. But they’re so used to lazy ports making so much money that they see no reason to put in the time, money or effort to make a unique experience on the console.

Frankly, I for one don’t even want all the ports. Give me brand new Wii U games to play on my brand new Wii U, not something I could’ve just as easily picked up for my PS3 or PC.

Yes, I’m sure this has nothing to do with the Wii U version being released a week later (if not even longer in other regions).

I feel he has a point, but then again I don’t care for CoD games on my consoles.
