Marvelous feels like crying over Wii sales

June 17th, 2009 Posted in News, Posted by Valay, Wii

Marvelous Entertainment has provided the Wii with some truly high-quality experiences. No More Heroes, Muramasa: The Demon Blade, and Rune Factory Frontier are just a few of the titles that have been praised by the media. However, that has not translated to success in the market. Marvelous updated their blog with a new post. Discussing Wii sales, the staff writer said, “I truly have teary eyes. I feel like crying.” And the situation isn’t looking any brighter for the company’s next game. Little King’s Story, Marvelous’ latest title to be released for the Wii in Japan, is said to have very low pre-order numbers.

Man… that sucks. They publish some great games. While I didn’t get NMH, I am planning to get NMH2. I also bought Little King’s Story.

lol what?! no more heroes sold well, and rune factory didnt look good so dont mention, but i dont know about Muramasa: The Demon Blade it looked good, but there are just so many other games id rather not pick it up, but it does look like a nice game, i would get it if i actually had cash, and some type of multiplayer would have been nice.

@ kunit22c – Worldwide, I think the sales numbers are good. But definitely in Japan, the sales were disappointing. The launch figures were not good at all and I think I remember Suda talking about he was disappointed.

don’t be surprised, nmh sold crappily for the awesome game it was, i own it and i plan on getting little king, but games like that won’t sell on wii, too much junk hiding the gems

    WTF!??
what the hell is this guy crying about!??

Is he talking about the Wii games sales or Wii hardware sales.

Why is he crying? is the sales good or bad?:/

@Xino – You should try reading.

“No More Heroes, Muramasa: The Demon Blade, and Rune Factory Frontier are just a few of the titles that have been praised by the media. However, that has not translated to success in the market.”

These two sentences answer all your questions and they are all in the post.

That is really sad. Looks like other developers were right; the Wii is just fool’s gold. Even innovative, high profile games like Mad World sold horribly. The hardware’s selling great, but only Nintendo-brand titles seem to well along with it. =/

Marvelous is awesome. And thats all their is to it. I own all of their titles and all play beautifully. They are my favourite 3rd party publisher.

It is sad but why is the publisher sticking to Wii exclusives after the first three didn’t go well for them.

Fact is that the Wii does not have many “core” gamers, desperate for a more adult gaming sessions on their Nintendo. Most serious gamers with a Wii have it as a second system or are just Nintendo fanboys. As such what sells is Nintendo titles and good multiplayer / party games.

For instance when Madworld came out I considered buying it, but there were far more new violent action games to choose from on my PS3 (Killzone, RE5 and SF4 to name but three). It was the best Wii option, but the market of adult core gamers with only a Wii is not very big.

Face it, devs – Nintendo is a kiddy console. I don’t care how many Wii Fit Girls you parade around. That just makes it a ‘girly’ console to boot.

Nobody takes it seriously. Even Wii owners probably don’t use it much…just casually.

So quit whining and make the leap to developing for Playstation or XBOX if you want the big numbers.

aargh u people actually think they will sell better on other consoles ?

It’s sad to see the Wii turning into a viral marketed TV-Shop item for overweight housewives trying to shed a few pounds without leaving their house.

These games wouldn’t have played as well on the other consoles. I own all three plus the handhelds and I personally think NMH and MadWorld, to say the least, would’ve been crushed by all the superior graphical games on the other consoles. The Wii was perfect for them, they got enough attention, if they were ps3 360 they wouldn’t have.

@ Ukushi: Are you kidding me? This whole article was about how these games DIDN’T get any attention! And everybody knows it. The Wii has sold about 50 MILLION units and not even a small fraction (like 75,000) of these owners were interested in edgy games like Madworld. Now on the PS3/Xbox 360, a good edgy game can at least hope to sell 1 million copies (and that is out of about 20-30 MILLION owners). I would have bought these games if they were on my 360. And I am still crying over Fatal Frame 4. I just can’t justify buying a Wii for a handful of (mostly family-oriented) games. And also, I am a graphics whore. I love beautiful HD graphics. And to say that any game wouldn’t benefit from more detailed, less blockier, more realisitic graphics is just silly.

Advertisement works…. all of these games had none, what do they expect. (save for magazine pages or advertisements on sites like IGN where it never reaches anyone aside from those who already know about the game anyway)

Such a shame. All those games ruled except for rune factory.

they need to get a clue and start making games for the PS3 and 360. The Wii is fad with mostly shovelware titles. If they want to bring creativity to games, then make it on a platform that you know will garner the attention.
