Why doesn’t Spyborgs have online co-op?

July 19th, 2009 Posted in News, Posted by Valay, Wii

“Online co-op isn’t just a ‘oh, let’s just tuck that in there.’ There’s a ton of design work on top of the technological implementation that would have to be done. Then there’s online testing to do.

Online is really, really hard in anything and should never be done as an afterthought. And in 2009, I don’t think it’s absolutely required in every game. How many Wii titles have online co-op, even from Nintendo?” – Christian Svensson, Corporate Officer/VP of Strategic Planning & Business Development

Online co-op is something that I would like to see more Wii games take advantage of. However, even though Spyborgs doesn’t support it, I’m still interested in checking out the final product.

Plenty reasonable for the game not to have it, but the jab at Nintendo directly seems uncalled for, though typical of Christian Svensson’s usual Nintendo platform remarks. The Wii’s no less capable of quality online co-op than either of its competitors, and whether or not Nintendo’s pushing that is no excuse for avoiding it.

All that said, we’ve already got a few games that do online co-op well, like Endless Ocean, FFCC Echoes of Time, and Onslaught. And we’ve got more coming in Endless Ocean 2 (With Wii Speak support), Valhalla Knights: Eldar Saga, and Monster Hunter 3. There’s always more room for games with good online co-op, but from the looks of Spyborgs, it’d neither make nor break the game for what it is – I’m looking forward to it, personally.

I think more people would have been satisfied with “It wasn’t our call, it was a design decision by Bionic.” However, rubbing salt into the wounds by offering a crappy excuse, as well as a jab at Nintendo? Dirty pool, Capcom. Dirty pool.
