Iwata: We know our E3 briefing wasn’t good, still trying to improve

August 9th, 2009 Posted in General Nintendo, News, Posted by Brian

Without a doubt, Nintendo’s E3 2009 media briefing saw a rather large change over the year before. Hardcore gaming had a larger focus with announcements such as Golden Sun DS, New Super Mario Bros. Wii, Super Mario Galaxy 2, and Metroid: Other M. However, there were still a number of issues that were present at the conference. Specifically, the overall presentation was unorganized and dull.

Satoru Iwata seems to agree that there is room for improvement, though. Iwata was asked about Nintendo’s perception of their latest conference at the first quarter financial results briefing and said he understands that it is important “to look into finding a better way to demonstrate the products’ appeal better.”

“As for the media briefing at E3, of course we had many internal discussions after that. Honestly speaking, none of us at Nintendo thought that our presentation at E3 was as good as it could have been. It is apparent that we could not fully convey the charm of our products. In the past, Wii Sports and Wii Fit were naturally able to convey their appeal on stage since it was something no one had ever seen or imagined before. People seemed to capture the appeal of Wii Sports instantly and although there was some initial confusion with Wii Fit, its appeal did get through to the audience afterwards. This year, however, with the New Super Mario Bros. Wii, four people lined up with Wii Remotes was not a scene that no one had ever seen. Those who actually had the chance to play understood how the game would change with four people playing simultaneously, but we could not address that fun sentiment at the media briefing. Now we strongly feel that we need to look into finding a better way to demonstrate the products’ appeal better at E3 in these times where more people are watching it online via web cast not only in the U.S. but all around the world, than the number of audience who actually watch it in the theatre. In that sense, we learned many lessons from this year’s E3 show. After the media briefing, we had a domestic trade briefing in Japan. There we disclosed the black Wii console and red Nintendo DSi, which made a big buzz among game fans. It is also an important lesson for next year.”

I thought E3 was alright, but i appreciate nintendo wanting to improve it even more :)

They always say that after the fact. When it does not matter. There is no try only do or not at all. I mean it just makes you shrug and wonder why they cant find the time before hand to make it better.

kfizz is right. nintendo did the same thing last year. they produced a lacklustre E3 briefing then admitted it was bad after the fact. and now they have done it again this year. instead of complaining about it afterwards nintendo should try harder to impress E3 goers ON THE DAY.

Agreed with your comments, guys. However, I do think that their conference this year was a vast improvement over E3 2008.

Lol its funny how before E3 all these sites and fanboys were saying “all Nintendo needs to do is confirm a new Mario or Zelda and they will have a good E3″ but yet they announce 2 new Mario’s a new Zelda and a new Metroid and yet the fanboys still complain… Nintendo is just saying this to shut them up, and Nintendo dont listen to them your E3 this year was good, but I bet you still have something up your sleeve for Tokyo Gameshow, last year you saved Sin and Punishment 2 and Punch Out!! Im hoping this year you saved 2 of these 3, Pikmin 3, Kid Icarus, Kirby Wii. All 3 of these have practically been confirmed.

Overall, they definitely had a much better showing this year than last year overall. (And this is speaking as someone planning on snagging Wii Sports Resort and Wii Music yet, and who bought Animal Crossing City Folk back in November and still plays it every week, even after playing the previous two for a year each.) It’s good to see them planning on improving things more, but while their conference was a mixed bag, they had a stellar lineup this year.

Good WiiWare and DSiWare unveilings, more confirmation of some upcoming big and smaller name Wii titles, and some fantastic niche DS games. (Like Fossil Fighters and the Glory of Heracles.) The internet jumped all over and trolled the Vitality Sensor when it’ll be cheap – and it’s not like you HAVE to buy it anyway – and while they didn’t unveil any actual functionality use at E3 (Making it arguably a bit early to show it, though no matter when they did, people would have complained.), it possesses far more potential than most on the typically anti-Nintendo-slanted blogs would ever admit, in the sorts of content generation that could be added to all sorts of games through it. (Even Suda 51 has said he has ideas for how he wants to use it – comments lost in the slew of his “Hey, I got caught up in Natal hype!” remarks two months ago that everyone took as immediate evidence that he’d be ditching the Wii, when he’s said nothing of the sort since that week or so, and he’s not exactly unknown for his inconsistency in that regard.)

But yeah, really, the only things Nintendo did questionably at E3 this year were focusing on the expanded/”casual” audience for big parts of their showing (Which is something here to stay, the expanded audience is a part of gaming now, it’ll never just be about the core alone again. This is only a healthy thing for the industry.), not showing enough of their niche games at their conference that they had there overall, and Cammie Dunaway. And don’t get me wrong, I like Cammie, she’s a good spokesperson for the expanded audience, but she doesn’t have the charisma and public speaking abilities that make her ideal for an event like E3. She was really exuberant at E3 ’08 and everyone complained, so she toned it down a lot this year and everyone complained – she can’t win, and is probably best kept to smaller scale events and relations with the public. While at E3, Nintendo fans generally just want to see Reggie, Miyamoto, and Iwata. But on the whole, they had a great lineup at E3 this year, which beat the hell out of the other two’s “Hey, here’s more of the same and mostly games you already knew about, plus desperate attempts to score some stock boosts through motion control peripherals that won’t get much support.”

New Super Mario Bros. could’ve been unveiled as a bigger deal than it was, though it’s still a big game, and it would’ve been nice to have things on Kirby, Pikmin 3, and Zelda Wii to show, but Metroid: Other M and Golden Sun DS were definite megatons, and on the whole, their showings did a good job balancing new things for a large variety of gamer types with hyping up big titles like Wii Sports Resort for this year.

It was still considered bad because they didn’t show the games that people wanted to see, how long have people been asking for Kid Icarus now, a game demo should have been shown, how long have we waited for a real Zelda Wii only to have 1 piece of concept art shown after the main E3 showing, no demo which was expected !!! That’s why people said it wasn’t as good as it should have been. No
F-Zero,Pilotwings,Excite Bike,Waverace,Kirby,Pikmin 3 wasn’t even shown. And seriously where is Starfox, this is what we wanted to hear.

If decide to create the already written essays, you should know that that requires a lot of work! Different students spoil their essay assignment, just because they are not professionals! It’s tragic, but the buy research paper service would support such kind of people any time they need.

Hey I just wanted to let you know, I really like the written material on your website. But I am using Flock on a machine running version 9.04 of Crashbang Ubuntu and the design aren’t quite kosh er. Not a important deal, I can still essentially read the articles and search for information, but just wanted to inform you about that. The navigation bar is kind of tough to apply with the config I’m running. Keep up the superb work!

I was reading something else about this on another blog. Interesting. Your linear perspective on it is diametrically contradicted to what I read originally. I am still contemplating over the various points of view, but I’m tipped to a great extent toward yours. And regardless, that’s what is so super about modern democracy and the marketplace of thoughts online.

I’d personally like to read everything that you know about this subject matter. You only have scratched the top of your awareness for this and that’s clear from the way you blog. Have you considered devoting a complete web page so that people won’t miss that which you must say?
