SEGA reaffirms commitment to hardcore Wii games, talks The Conduit sales

“I don’t know why MadWorld didn’t sell so well. Perhaps it was the black and white graphics or the violence, but to argue mature games don’t sell well on Wii just because we launched one that didn’t hit right away would be arrogant. We have other teen and mature games we will be launching on the Wii platform…[Referring to The Conduit] Show me another new IP that has done those numbers, bearing in mind the Wii market has been a little slow this summer. If you compare The Conduit with other core IP that’s been launched in the last three years it’s tracking well above.” – Sega West president Mike Hayes

Mr. Hayes also said that 300,000 units of The Conduit have been shipped worldwide since its release. I wonder what percentage of that has been sold through…

O.K. this is the problem with devs and publishers alike, no one is playing their own games. The reason MadWorld didn’t sell well Sega West president Mike Hayes, is that by the time you reached the second level of the game, the combat had already become so repetitive that it just seamed too laborious to continue (and I actually finished the game). The game spent all it had within the first two levels, it’s called pacing and this game lacked it big time.

Now if I Jason Tanner, a lowly video game columnist and reviewer can tell you why it didn’t sell well, what does that say about you Mike Hayes? You’re the F-ing president of Sega West, it’s probably time to stop doing lines of cocaine of some hookers a$$ and actually start paying attention to the products your publishing.

When you get down to it, MadWorld was a niche title from the get-go. It was basically the Wii’s GodHand in concept, design, and gameplay – a fun premise, but extremely limiting in terms of audience by nature on every level. It was a success though, for sure, in that it outsold GodHand quite a few times over, and GodHand was released at the peak of the PS2′s lifespan.
