SEGA making a new 2D Sonic game, but it’s probably not coming to Wii

September 8th, 2009 Posted in News, Posted by Valay, Wii

I was debating whether or not to post this, since it seems like this game won’t be heading to Wii. Nothing is confirmed yet, but Ken Ballough from SEGA stated in an interview that “You can definitely expect HD graphics.” I’m still hoping that this will head to the Wii, though I wouldn’t count on it at this point.

Well I think is going to suck anyway, man I give up Sonic a long time ago.

Actually I hope that this is on Wii, I mean sure I have a PS3 now, but I dont want to pay $60 for a 2D sonic. Even $50 is outrageous I hope its a PSN XBL and WiiWare title.

i bet this is to combat Mario Galaxy 2 next year. Good luck sega, because this game wont come close to Galaxy 2′s sales.

You’re all cynics. You saw “new Sonic” and made assumptions. As a fan of both Nintendo and old Sega, I’m offended.

Sonic needs a reboot. This may be it. It’d be a very good thing if the post-Dreamcast era was wiped from series history, or even if they started the series fresh. If you’ll notice from the trailer, the classic sound effects are back, from “Sega” to the spin jumps. Green Hill-like architecture was found on the teaser website.

And that logo? It totally looks like it’s built to say “Sonic the Hedgehog 4.” Even Sonic’s shape looks different… No, if my eyes don’t deceive me, that’s the original Sonic design I grew up with, not the modern one (unless it’s another redesign)! Also, noting that Sonic was indeed called “Mr. Needlemouse” in early development, I think the codename is a good indication of a non-gimmicky, not outsourced return to form reboot.

Classic Sonic is back. And if that’s true, this could be bigger than Mega Man 9.

It’s not sure that it will be a new sonic game. Needlemouse was a beta version of sonic the hedgehog when the first game was being created. So…

clones, i think most of us arent beliving in this yet because of what sega has done in the past.

@Needemouse – it’s confirmed to be a Sonic game. They had a GameSpot interview already.

And @Bob – This trailer speaks for itself. It’s clear that this is going to not be a gimmick or outsourced to another company. Thus, I don’t believe the past should be an indication. Sega is giving the fans what they want… Another full 2D console adventure.

Considering that the sprites being created for high res displays in no way means the game can’t be made to work just fine – and still look gorgeous in SD – just from looking at how Muramasa was produced, there’s nothing that says this won’t come to the Wii.

Sega’s been very good to the Wii, and it’s been making money hand over fist on its games on the system, while its HD releases have, on the whole, failed to make money. The Sonic games have outright failed on those platforms – and the Sony and MS crowds aren’t even the 2D Sonic crowd from the 16-bit days, this is the same audience that ignored Mega Man 9 because they had no nostalgia for the 2D gameplay and simply don’t buy games with retro style visuals – while all the Wii Sonic titles have sold quite well and made plenty of money.

I sincerely doubt, as such, that Sega’s about to ignore their main fanbase with their new major Sonic reboot. That’s a level of stupid Sega hasn’t been displaying this generation.
