Reggie: It’s a mistake to say core gamers have been ignored

September 16th, 2009 Posted in News, Posted by Valay, Wii

Admittedly, Nintendo’s holiday 2009 lineup is much better than last year’s with the inclusion of New Super Mario Bros. Wii. As far as the whole year goes though, there have also been a number of remakes/upgrades/compilation releases. But Reggie Fils-Aime, President and COO of Nintendo of America, believes that it’s a mistake to say that hardcore gamers have been ignored.

“…But I think it’s a mistake to say that we’ve ignored the gamer or that we don’t have products for the core gamer. I mean, New Super Mario Bros. has every gamer excited. Just the little tidbits that we’ve shown about the new Zelda for Wii has gamers tremendously excited. We’re going to continue to bring great content both to that experienced player as well as the brand new player, and that’s what we do really well.”

Thanks to Jake for the news tip!

Core gamers have been ignored… Big N was successful on that, its so obvious that Nintendo has already change course. With new tech coming to PS3 & 360 (Natal). I think its already too late… Not mentioning the price drops of both console, would that make you decide to change course & move on as well in to something mainstream?

hey reg, i’m one of those so called “core” gamers. you aren’t releasing anything that excites me. in fact i purchased conduit in the hopes that a third party could do something worthwhile on the wii. they couldn’t and that game sucks. for the first time in my life, i’m thinking about jumping off of the nintendo bandwagon. i’ve been gaming with nintendo since the nes, and have always supported your company, even through the n64 and gcn years. I deserve better than this from you. also, club nintendo in america is still a joke. i’m really hating you noa.

Well, I grew up on Nintendo since NES and I still fully support them. If you guys haven’t noticed, Nintendo released all their big titles within a 2 years span so bringing out the next new Zelda, Metroid, and Mario will take time. Just wondering if they are working on a new F-Zero though… Anyway, there’s no need to bicker if you own more than two systems. It nice to have Nintendo by your sid though.

There ignorance to the needs of those who have supported them through the good time and the bad is outstanding. Sure Nintendo has an untold number of IP’s but what use is that if they dont attempt to use them or at least keep them fresh. By now I think i should have seen an F-zero, True Zelda(No waggle port), Donkey kong, Star Fox, Wario platformer, Yoshi’s island wii, Online support for most if not ALL Wii multiplayer games + Speak inclusion, Pit, Ice climbers, Diddy kong racing and a heap of thrid party support showing us Nintendo means business. Remember the days when Konami and Square was Nintendo’s mean priority…. I was there. Nintendo is leading this Generation using casuals gamers and thats great the more people playing games the better but why excluded us core gamers to do so. wheres the logic in that.

  8. By 1337 on Sep 16, 2009

But hay guyz we have Animal Crossing and the wii Vitality Sensor!!!1

  9. By Kris on Sep 16, 2009

    continue…..
To add injury to insult they have the nerve to tell me that games like Zelda Wii and Metroid: other M are for us core gamers and im sure they are but where the heck are they. These types of internal high profile IPs should have been here at launch instead we are gonna have to wait for another year for titles that might not even deliver on there promise. Nintendo is a great company…. no doubt but they have me and many others wondering if they know we still exist. I have a theory about there game plan. They might be so hard at work on there Next generation line-up that they forgot about this current generation, its the only excuse i can think of that would allow such neglect. Even Gc was better then this. When i bought my Wii the first thing i asked was “wheres the motion controls?” Years later I found it in motion+ but without any games developers to really sink there teeth into its technology and physics i find myself regretting my purchase. Regie said at E3 that ‘all the other company’s are talking about the future of motion control but were doing it here and now’. All i can say is that your a bottom feeder mate no joke. Get a different Job. At least when Sony and Microsoft come with Motion controls they will come correct.

1337 your joking right, plz tell me your joking.

  11. By Ares on Sep 16, 2009

Man screw you guys! What do you want Nintendo to do? They are number one and making games left and right. I have all three consoles and play them equally. Mario, Zelda, and Metroid are seriously as good as it gets. Yes, I love Gears, Ninja Gaiden, Final Fantasy, and the rest too but Nintendo does just fine. I can’t wait for the new super mario wii. If you hate them then get the hell off the band wagon and shut up already! And if you are not on the bandwagon but you decided to go to a Nintendo site to bash them then you seriously need a life.

  12. By Kris on Sep 16, 2009

Ares…. Come off the crack pipe.

  13. By Kris on Sep 16, 2009

Im on the bandwagon but i dont like where its taking me and since Iv been on this bandwagon since i was 2 year old im finding it hard to accept that Nintendo is letting me down. Again.
The only way to make the them change course is to express your views. FIX UP NINTENDO BEFORE ITS TOO LATE. Sega’s dreamcast was great and they still crumbled and ill be damned if i let that happen to the BIG N.

  14. By real deal on Sep 16, 2009

I agree with Kris, this bandwagon is lost. This is not the Nintendo i knew.

  15. By Bernardo on Sep 16, 2009

I don’t think he knows what “hardcore” gaming is.

  16. By Troy on Sep 16, 2009

I find it funny that to counter the arguament that “core” gamers are being ignored, Reggie Brings up 2 games that aren’t even out. Heck, we haven’t even SEEN the new Zelda.

  17. By Mr. Hankey on Sep 16, 2009

So does “not ignoring core gamers” mean:

Censoring and dumbing down the graphics on Metroid Prime Trilogy?

By the way, what is the ratio of casual and kiddie games to core games on the wii?

Also, how does the wii version of Final Fantasy stack up to the versions coming out on 360 and PS3 (not just graphically)?

If there are so many hardcore wii games, how come rockstar hasn’t made one yet?

And as for New Super Mario Brothers, and tidbits of the New Zelda…..do you think they have confused fanboy with core gamer?

    Lil’ Reggie is Bat-Shit Crazy!

  18. By J on Sep 16, 2009

Since the N64 its always been downhill from there!

No Reggie you don´t make games for me anymore!

Good that i´ve got a high-end PC otherwise i won´t be playing much anymore!

  19. By John on Sep 16, 2009

Nah sorry mate, the core gamers have been forgotten about. I had a Wii and the line up of games for core gamers was abysmul. Sure Zelda n mario r great(i should know i own them) but the majority of games are hopeless .I mean what the hell is with all the little crappy sport games and wii wagler bullshit. Not to mention how lame wii music was….bloody Midi sound effects.Jeeeeeeeezzzzzzzz

  20. By Smithy J on Sep 16, 2009

This is just why i bought a ps3. Nintendo dont care about the people that got em to where they are 2day.

I was a die hard Nintendo fanboy since the nes (i even went to see that gay pokemon movie.lol). But in 2007 i came to a realisation that Nintendo just wana make money off the casual gamer.

Now im glad they are doing well cos of the old fanboy inside but really, Reggie shouldnt be lying to himself when he says that they havent forgotten the core gamer.

  21. By keyz on Sep 16, 2009

52 million wii’s sold. Nintendo is doing something right. And those 52 million arent all casuls either, regardless of what you guys say. I agree with Reggie. Within the next year and a half, Nintendo will have released(announced so far)

    NSMBwii
    Endless Ocean 2
    Galaxy 2
    Metroid Other M
    Golden Sun DS

This isnt counting all the quality third party games coming out either(Muramasa, Monster Hunter 3,Silent Hill, FFCC: CB etc…) Go back to your ps3 room ya trolls. Just because Sony lowered the price on the peice of shit they lost 3 billion dollars on, doesnt mean that you can beat 52 million wii’s sold.

The way I see it, Nintendo is making just as many first party core titles on Wii as they have on past Nintendo consoles, in addition to adding more first party casual titles (which are also very fun) into the mix. The problem with Wii lies in third parties, not Nintendo.

  23. By nentinfando on Sep 16, 2009

am a nentindo fan since NES-SNES they have butt load portfolio of games they could add to wii instead it becomes wiiware why??? why are all the games shovelware?? I’ve waited years to get my hands on another contra game disc. just my luck contra rebirth
look like tom an jerry cartoon. why REG. why is nentindo not making solid games anymore??? you only can go so far with kiddy games.

  24. By nentinfando on Sep 16, 2009

    P.S.
    REGGIE,
have you consider people who dont have high speed connection to download your craptastic games?? there are millions still want to hold a hard copy in their hands. you need to go back to SNES days bring back donky kong, contra “the real contra”, r-type shooter, gradious…etc

  25. By ThatGuy on Sep 16, 2009

Austin’s got it right. Nintendo is doing for us exactly what they’ve done in the past (Hell, maybe even moreso! Twilight Princess, Prime 3, Galaxy, and Brawl all within a year and a half? Thank you!!!), in addition to making games for an expanded audience. Third parties just need to step it up some more. They’ve already made a lot of improvement, but we apparently need more. :/

  26. By JoshZTP2 on Sep 17, 2009

All I have to say is O-M-G!! already up to 25 comments; & you guys are still talking nonsense?! Do you idiots NOT HAVE LIVES or something; or anything better to do other than insult Nintendo?! Go play your stupid PS3 & Xbox360 & pretty stinking high def violent pieces of shit games! :(

You’ve got to understand that people at every branch of Nintendo need to take their time making games; if it’s Zelda Wii, Mario this or that… or anything worth while that’ll be good! SEESH; learn to have patience… & not bash Nintendo when they say stuff that they’ve haven’t abandoned their core audience! It takes years for all of the good games to come out you know! ;)

    hi,
im 34, i’ve never had a nintendo, except original gameboy. for me, nintendo was a kiddy console – i’vd owned segasand others.
but after years of playing games, there were get dull. then there was the wii…a nintendo? for me? ok, try…bought at launchday here in germany – NEVER REGRET. Playing Games is FUN again !
and i play no casual/kiddie stuff: scarface, godfather (the best 3rd.person with best controls on wii),madworld, metroid3, ghostsqad, re:uc, re4,hot:overkill, manhunt2, 2x callofduty, 2x moh, CONDUIT, star wars force unleashed (yeah, controls make the game better than on ps3 !),no more heroes, dead rising …and wii will get dead space, some hvs-games and many more.
YOU JUST HAVE TO WAIT – Blame the 3rd partys, not nintendo.
and the best: meanwhlie, i like *mariogames* such kart & galaxy – its fine oldschoolplaying hardcore stuff. i’ve never a fan of mario or zelda (imho dull) – but today, i play these stuff on my daughters ds too :-) ) great stuff too.
so i must get 34 age to like nintendo – thanks for giving me back FUN in Gaming. buttonshmashing was yesterday.

Hey guys. let me start by saying that im not a fanboy, I owned all the current systems at one point. I just think it really sad that Wii people have to wait for nintendo to make a good game since third partys usually suck. On PS3 and 360, you have a steady flow of good games year round. within the next few months PS3 will be getting uncharted 2, ratchet and clank, COD MW2, katamari, god of war, heavy rain, and MAG. Thats about a year and a half of good wii games. just sayin. and please dont call me a fanboy. i play nintendo systems. i also play 360 so im not really biased at all.

  29. By DenyThisFlesh on Sep 17, 2009

I jumped off the Nintendo bandwagon not too long after I bought a Wii. There really aren’t any games on the Wii that I would play over the games I have for my 360.

  30. By InjuredNinja on Sep 17, 2009

LOL. Reggie… what a tool. He was such a step in the right direction for Nintendo originally. What happened? The Wii has absolutely minimal REAL games, everyone know this. Of course Zelda is awesome, and Mario is a good time. And if you want to wait 4 years between every fantastic experience, hop in bed with Nintendo. But if you want a steady flow of decent games, you just can’t be faithful to the big N anymore. They may sell the most systems, but it is literally not even debatable that their software is pathetic. We know it, they know it, and it’s not changing any time soon.
