GoldenEye 007 for Wii VC, XBLA “long past the stage where an agreement was on the cards”

September 20th, 2009 Posted in News, Posted by Brian, Wii

Last year, there was a whole lot of news concerning GoldenEye for the Wii Virtual Console and Xbox Live Arcade. Initially, sources told EGM magazine that Nintendo and Microsoft were unable to reach an agreement when financial terms were being discussed. Then Rare spoke up and said that liscensing issues prevented the game’s re-release. Last but not least, an Activision source later ultimately placed blame on Nintendo as one of the reasons for the game never seeing the light of day.

Sadly, it doesn’t look like things will be changing any time soon. Rare addressed a bunch of topics in its most recent Scribes update and one reader question brought up was whether GoldenEye could launch on the Wii/360 and if an agreement can be reached. Rare’s response is below.

That was some time ago, my friend. Fate was against us that day. Destiny conspired to raise the hurdles even as we attempted to clear them, resulting in unpleasant groinal injury. I suspect we’re long past the stage where an agreement was on the cards, but you never know. Stranger things have happened… somewhere… probably.”

The virtual console titles, are getting thin. Every one of them worth buying I bought, zelda ect. Now give us those great rare titles! Bring goldeneye/perfect dark to wiiware widescreen with wii controls! We will pay $15 for them even!

Im on Nintendo’s side with this one guys. Golden Eye was a revolutionary title, and was funded and aided by Nintendo. I wouldnt want to give that up cheaply either.

why would they want microsoft to profit off of their hard work when all they’ve been doing is insulting them for the past 9 years

What sucks it that Microsoft/Rare offered up to make the game for both consoles! Freakin Nintendo…at least we get Perfect Dark in the fall running at 60 fps and in HD

I think a plain old VIRTUAL CONSOLE release is a bad idea!!.
    WHY?..Well i think it would be better to polish up(just a little)the dated graphics & add a 8 player online(WFC)deathmatch/cap the flag ect,ect.
This way it would sort of revive the game and add new fan’s to this classic game.
    So to re-cap,VIRTUAL CONSOLE=OUT & UPDATE+MULTIPLAYER+Wii WARE=IN.

The problem with the “deal” Microsoft proposed was that the Wii would only get the original N64 version, while XBLA would get a new version with redone graphics, online play, etc.

Nintendo didn’t view that as a fair trade off, and honestly I don’t blame them, even though it does suck.

Awww, man, Rare-do it for the fans, pretty please with sugar?
I have but 3 words for you-Conker’s Bad Fur day
-kinda stunk on the Xbox (despite the purty graphics)
we want Bond and We want Conker

The real problem was Nintendo in the deal. Wiiware would have gotten the same revamped edition as XBLA. The same insider who released a load of screenshots and details on the game after it’s cancellation also stated that Nintendo wasn’t allowing the game to be released unless it was exclusive to their console. Nintendo threatened to sue otherwise. This was published in a Magazine and it may be a rumor but it’s a rumor backed up with the most evidence. I still don’t give a dam if it’s either companies fault because I want to play my Goldeneye in HD !!!
