Nintendo Channel to feature game announcements, surprise coming for Wii Internet users
October 16th, 2009 Posted in News, Posted by Valay, Wii“We’re really happy that our fans seem to be so positive about the updates to the Nintendo Channel and the new Nintendo Week show. As the show develops, viewers can expect Nintendo Week to be a source of exclusive game announcements and special guest appearances by game developers and celebrities. Of course, we’re all about providing our fans with surprises, so here’s a tease for you: We’re working on a little surprise for those who connect their Wii to the Internet, so keep your eye on the Nintendo Channel for that announcement to come in the near future.” – Denise Kaigler
This sounds like it could be pretty interesting. I actually spend a lot of time on the Nintendo Channel and there are some decent videos to check out. But I suppose I’ll have to keep an eye on the channel even more since Nintendo will have exclusive game announcements in the future. Perhaps the first game announcement will be the Today and Tomorrow Channel.

I really wish Nintendo would replace Denise Kaigler from her P.R. position. She comes across as way too “business oriented”, she has no cred as a gamer and that’s what gamers want to see, someone who knows both sides of nintendo but doesn’t appear like such a “suit”.
They can remove Cammy Dunnaway while they’re at it too. Everytime she opens her mouth she becomes more of a liability and stains the gamer image of the company.

First of at the first poster @Jason: Nintendo spokespeople like Denise & Cammy aren’t going away; end of freaking story!
On subject: I did surprisingly notice something about New Super Mario Bros. Wii scroll on the Nintendo Channel when I saw it on the Wii Menu; does that have something simular to do with the fact that it’s a game announcement… like this news pr has said?!

At this point, “gamer” is becoming more and more of a niche stereotype within the industry, and they’re never going to be the sole market to focus on anymore. It’s part of gaming itself becoming more and more of a mainstream and socially acceptable pastime, as obnoxious and childish as much of “gamer culture” itself actually is. They’re not going to stop catering to us, and Nintendo still caters to us far more than the “casual” crowd, but we’re never going to be the sole focus again, and “gamer cred” itself doesn’t make any difference to the average consumer. It’s all marketing to begin with, no matter how you look at it. Though I’m no fan of the “suit”-like mentality any more than anyone else. Cammy speaks better to the blue ocean market, but Denise has always been very up front when interviewed and open to all sorts of discussion.
And on the note of Nintendo Week, I’d have to say that’s probably the best way they could market the things they do – likable hosts, a lot of humor, and a good focus on all kinds of content, from the most mainstream blue ocean titles to far more obscure “hardcore” games, considering how much coverage they gave Muramasa in only the second episode. Even if Nintendo Week is essentially a marketing arm, it beats the hell out of pretty much everything on G4 in how obnoxious that whole network is, stepped in “gamer culture” as it is.
In general, I’m very happy with what they’ve done with the Nintendo Channel, and I’m looking forward to future updates and seeing what other content and features they may add in time.
