Dead Space Extraction, Spyborgs truly flopped in September

October 19th, 2009 Posted in News, Posted by Valay, Wii

While there was good news to report in our last NPD post regarding Scribblenauts, Kingdom Hearts 358/2 Days, and Muramasa: The Demon Blade, the same can’t be said for two significant Wii releases last month: Dead Space Extraction and Spyborgs.

Extraction, which launched in North America on September 29, sold just north of 9,000 units. Even though the NPD Group calculated data only from August 30 to October 3 (Extraction was in stores on September 29), it seems as though the title isn’t off to a good start at all (compare this data to Muramasa, which is an unestablished property) and reinforces what a Visceral Games employee said earlier today.

In other news, Capcom’s Spyborgs saw an absolutely dreadful debut. Numbers for the game fall somewhere around 500 copies sold in September. Like Extraction, the title wasn’t out for a long period of time, but considering it has already received a $30 price drop, it’d make sense to say that the game really didn’t sell particularly well in its first few weeks on the market.

I’m not surprised about Spyroborgs, let’s face it, it was destined to flop. It was a total joke. I mean calling that game a hard-core game was ludicrous. Seriously, did that game impress anyone?

@ umb – I know a lot of Wii owners were disappointed that the game is on-rails, but it’s actually a very high-quality game.

Spyborgs is a piece of garbage, so no surprise there. However Dead Space Extraction is one of the best rail shooters I’ve played with an incredible atmosphere. Sad and irritating seeing it, especially considering that RE DarkSide Chronicles will for sure perform much better. And let’s face it RE DC is a generic rail shooter with a RE name. It also has to be noted that Wii has too many rail shooters, the genre is perhaps a little over saturated, maybe if Visceral went the FPS way, the game would perform better.

Both games are good, but you can only sell your plasma so many times to buy stuff these days….

Oh man… That is REALLY bad…
I may just have to postpone my adventures into NSMB to get Dead Space now…

All those so called moaning core gamers who said there aren’t enough core games on Wii shouldn’t complain now because Dead Space is the best game i’ve played on the Wii this year.

it’s not the games that flop, it’s the system. Unless it’s casual crap or yet another derivative mario game, it will sell poorly.
You take away casuals, and wii install base would be smaller than the cubes. Put a fork in it.

meh: Then please, do explain the platinum sales of RE4, Force Unleashed, and Call of Duty, among other “Hardcore” titles. For that matter, if you’re going to talk crap about a Nintendo console, then what the hell are you doing on a Nintendo fan site in the first place? ;)

Good games sell on the Wii. The problem lay in a few factors, namely marketing (I’ve never seen an ad for Dead Space: Extraction or Spyborgs on TV), and public perception (Visceral and Capcom did NOTHING when sites like Kotaku began talking crap about the games, while providing pre-alpha screens). The games shipped with absolutely no fanfare on the market.

Long story short, these games were sent out to die. They were thrown to shelves, so they WOULD under-perform. This would be just convenient for them to throw in Wii owners’ faces – “You SAID you wanted it but you didn’t buy this and this and THIS!” It’s a perfect scapegoat. They escape the blame of their own shortcomings, and project it onto the console owners. They’re basically basically biting the hand that feeds them.

Got DSE.Awesome.Its true, no advertising means no sales, especially on Wii which gets flooded. And no, guerilla tactics like dev interviews wont do it.Print ads.Still.
Also, releasing it when Metroid Prime Trilogy comes out isnt clever as that is even more hardcore and long awaited.
I fear that Cursed Mountain suffers the same.Stupid to release such games in September when everybody saves up for xmas :/

Notice how no one mentions the decent sales of Muramasa in the US (a brand new IP just like Spyborgs the only difference is Muramasa is a great game, whereas Spyborgs was just decent) Gamers WILL support good games on the Wii, developers need to recognise this. Not every “core” game on a system will sell, thats just life and no excuse to stop trying!

Maybe this is Nintendo wii onwers saying, “We don’t want on-rail shooters!”.This game will start too sell because Nintendo titles are “Evergreen” and more people will be getting the Nintendo wii for the holidays.

This is unfortunate for the publishers of these games, but I personally care very little on them, as I am more into first-party Nintendo games.

The Wii is a waste of time. The facts are clear that mostly the games that sell well on the wii are 1st party!! Anything else with including supportive means of advertizing will still fail. The Wii will eventually fall from the top cause 1.people are going to get tired of 1st party remakes reguardless how good they are and 2. With Microsoft And Sony constantly bringing better games to the table with price drops every now and then there will be no reason to buy the Wii unless you can get one for free. And 3. I have all 3 systems and the Wii gets little to no love in this house.

If you don’t advertise, It won’t sell. No hype, no buy.

Not a surprise. Maybe Capcom and EA will wise up and quit being so lazy toward the Wii.

Did they really expect people to rush over to GameStop and buy an On-rails shooter and that insult that was Spyborgs?

And to the idiots that keep claiming the ‘Wii’ is to blame… Why not grow up and quit taking out your frustration because the 360 and PS3 are such failures? Yeah, how does that sound? Good.

Dead space was a good game, a friend got it and we played it all night.I never went out and got it tho.The fact that it was on-rails was why i didn’t buy it ,but after i played it i was inpressed.I still may go get it i don’t know yet.Uncharted 2 is eating up my time right now.

Or maybe … Gasp wait for it, most of the core gamers have softmodded their Wii. So have the games and only buy the decent ones. Btw spyborgs was pretty cool. Beat em up for the win. Peace

Great! Dead Space at 20 next month! I will be buying it.

That’s what EA deserve for being lazy and putting the game as an on rails stupid shooter.
