Analyst points to lack of advertising for Dead Space Extraction sales, says mature Wii market size is small

EEDAR analyst Jesse Divnich has discussed Dead Space Extraction’s poor sales and notes that EA did not support the title with strong advertising…

“Electronic Arts didn’t market Dead Space Extraction as much as it does with other titles. And the success or failure of a Wii title usually correlates directly to marketing spend. If Electronic Arts spent little on marketing, I am sure the sell through was no surprise to them. So I do not believe sell through was a disappointment to EA. Given Wii games tend to have a flatter sales curve, I don’t think 20,000 plus units is out of the question for October and maybe we get a holiday bump in November and December. Most games have a 12 to 24 month development schedule and over a year ago the industry was under the assumption that mature-rated games could succeed on the Wii. Unfortunately, as we progressed and witnessed the sales results from games such as MadWorld, it became pretty clear the market size for games with mature-content was extremely small, much smaller than any other home platform. The truth is most core gamers who gravitate towards mature content likely own more than just a Wii.”

    The mature wii market is there. We need better games. World at War proved that sales can be very good. WAW sold over a million worldwide.

    I don’t think that’s a good enough excuse. There are examples of other Mature titles that sold well enough on the Wii. What’s more, I felt that compared to Umbrella Chronicles, for a lightgun game, it was lacking some content. UC seemed to have a lot more going for it that warranted the purchase. Man up EA.

    There’s no mature Wii market because there’s so few good mature Wii games. And there’s so few good mature Wii games because the market is so small.

    It’s a chicken and egg thing.

    I really do not see the appeal of so-called “mature” games that this generation of “hardcore” gamers are so in love of these days. The mature Wii market size is small because the console is marketed and intended for the broad market, unlike the Wii’s dinosauric rivals who must depend on “mature” games to survive. Since I am most indifferent to violent and “mature” games (they are not my cup of tea), I am indifferent on how Dead Space Extraction sold.

    @Carmen

    I totally agree with what you’re saying, and I have myself have been saying the same thing all along. Just because it’s “mature” doesn’t say anything about it being a great game or not.

    @Hejiru,

    Unless you’ve conducted a survey or study on what you’re saying than why say anything like that at all? You’re opinion doesn’t make it fact.

    @Gigantorama

    Why do you keep “spamming” this site with a link to your site, especially when it has NOTHING to do with the topic at hand?

    Well I can honestly say I have yet to see a commercial for this game !!! Tese mature games never sell well because they are not marketed properly at all. I never seen a commercial for Madworld either and I believe I seen 1 for The Conduit. These companys should have comercials on during every Football game,Baseball game and things like Wrestling etc. That’s where their audience is but all I ever see is 360 or Ps3 commercials. This isn’t rocket science, you want sales attack the core audience.

    There are many successful “mature” Wii games on the market.

    Even the first Dead Space for Xbox360/PS3/PC has disappointing sales. How could EA expect good sales for a Rail-Shooter for an unknown franchise?
