First Zelda game received heavy opposition from Nintendo
October 25th, 2009 Posted in General Nintendo, News, Posted by ValayAlthough The Legend of Zelda is one of Nintendo’s most successful and beloved franchises, everyone wasn’t always on board with its main concept. At the Digital Contents Expo, Shigeru Miyamoto spoke about the series in his keynote and stated that initially, the first game received tremendous opposition because there was a belief that no one would know where to travel in the game’s open world. In other words, the amount of freedom in Zelda was questioned. There are so many options and paths available to the gamer, causing concern that players wouldn’t know what to do next.

It would not be surprising, as The Legend of Zelda was a game that was quite unique for its time. People who are used to games that are linear would of course be opposed to it. However, without innovations, the video game industry and Nintendo would not be as they are now.

zelda would not be zelda w/o freedom.

They need to bring back this same sense of freedom, though. Although the series benefits from being more storyline-based, there was a lot more freedom in the first game than any other game. If they can pull off the same level of exploration while keeping a coherent story, I’ll be very happy.

Ah yeah, I remember. Without reading the instruction manual and intro screen, you wouldn’t know what to do at all.

Let’s be honest. As kids, Zelda was a big challenge. Thankfully Nintendo Power was available to offer tips and maps. Retro gaming rules…but it was also tough.
