Pachter responds to Reggie’s Wii HD denial, still thinks it’s coming

December 6th, 2009 Posted in News, Posted by Valay, Wii

Over the past few months, Nintendo’s Reggie Fils-Aime and Wedbush Securities analyst Michael Pachter have had an ongoing verbal bout of sorts. Pachter has been claiming that a Wii HD is on the way, but a few weeks ago, Fils-Aime flat-out denied any plans for such a console to be released. On the November episode of GTTV, he stated:

“You know, Michael continues to be the only one who believes that this is gonna happen. I don’t know how forcefully we can say there is no Wii HD.”

Even with those remarks from Reggie, though, Pachter still believes that an HD version of the Wii is coming. On the latest episode of the Bonus Round, Pachter said:

“Reggie and I have a good cop, bad cop relationship. So I just keep saying yes, he keeps saying no…I know nothing, it makes rational business sense for them to introduce and soon, and I think they will introduce it and soon. 2010…Wii Plus…Yup [it is coming].”

I’m sorry, but I think a guy that is the head of NoA would know better than him if there was going to be a Wii HD.

You’d think so… but denials from heads of companies are typical. Of course he’s right in the sense that there will be no ‘Wii-HD’, and all that could mean is that the ‘Wii-HD’ will not be called the ‘Wii-HD’ nor will it necessarily work on the same graphical level as the true HD consoles, all it could do is simply render/upscale existing Wii games in HD with some optional exclusive actual HD games to match the HD consoles, much like what the DSi or the iPhone 3G is… It’ll be a small iteration like that. GIven that Wii sales, while higher than the competition are still dropping with no signs of recovery, means something is definately on the way to help boost them back up to where they were before.

What Johnno said. Announcement at E3 along with the new Zelda, perhaps?

I dont think a Wii-HD in is in the works i hope a brand new console is tho, ready for the end of 2011 or 2012.

Hejiru, Nintendo are well known for denying things to then be announced a couple of weeks later.

What are people expecting, an upgrade like the DS Lite or DSi, ie – A Wii HD that just upscales all existing and future Wii titles, or an actual new console that will have much more horsepower, and have specific “Wii HD” branded games that will only play on that system, not the current Wii?

I’m not sure which I’d prefer to be honest.

No company have officially confirmed new hardware by acknowledging rumours in all these years… It would kill the sales of the current hardware. Even if the Wii HD is coming, no one in their right mind would ever confirm it this way. The answer will forever be a no until it’s announced on stage during a conference. No other way. I believe Pachter is very right, but Reggie is just being a regular businessman by saying no. And frankly, it’s completely pointless to report on no shit stories like these since the answer will alwyas be a no, no matter the circumstances.

Why do you think the Ps3 Slim was announced just about 1 month before its release? It’s to maximize the sales.

Would be sweet if the next wii (what would they call it, the Wii Wii) upscaled games like the emulator does. Microsoft took alot of what pirates did with xbox1 and used the ideas for the 360. Im surprised they havent put scumm games on the virtual console, as it is possible with the homebrew channel among alot of other cool stuff.

Believe me when I say that Wii2 is coming. Just speak to anyone in the industry… it’s coming… and sooner than you think.

If a Wii HD is coming, Reggie will deny it till the end.
Until Nintendo is ready to announce it.
Being a secret, you don’t expect Reggie to go and say “Okay guys, you got us. There’s a Wii HD coming.”

Would you buy a wii if you knew a better one is coming out? I wouldnt, Id at least see if the current one will go down in price when the new one comes out (like Ive been doing with the DS systems)

Nintendo’s pattern has been to introduce a new home system every 5-6 years. People do the math, of course Nintendo is always planning the next system, you dont have to be an analysist to know that !! Will it be a HD system, of course it will, but that time the HDTV saturation rate will be high enough for Nintendo to warrant including it in a new system. If they made Wii HD, it would alienate their current customers and confuse them so its not happening. Just wait it out for their new system in another year or two :)

The next Nintendo console will be in HD, no doubt, and I can’t wait!
