Igarashi: DS the only platform in which it’s acceptable to publish 2-D games
December 13th, 2009 Posted in DS, News, Posted by ValayIn a recent issue of Nintendo Power (249), the magazine interviewed famous members of the gaming industry in honor of the DS’s fifth anniversary. Koji Igarashi, producer of numerous Castlevania games, had this to say about the system:
“If [you want] to have the sharp gameplay that only 2-D games can provide…Then I think DS is the only hardware [for which it is] acceptable to publish such a game.”
I have to admit, the DS has housed some truly beautiful and high-quality 2-D titles. The Castlevania games have especially worked well on the handheld.

Then why are they making Castlevania: The Adventure ReBirth for WiiWare…?
NSMBWii, Wario Land: The Shake Dimension, Muramasa and the Paper Mario games are brilliant 2D non-DS games.
If you’re making a fun game in 2D it doesn’t really matter which console it’s on.

@Gavin
I totally agree with you, but the sad fact is that people expect 3D on a TV console. I admit that I would be really mad if the new Zelda Wii game turned out to be 2D, no matter how good it is. We have just come to accept 3D as the bare minimum. I just hope 2D games don’t die out.

“We have just come to accept 3D as the bare minimum” suggests that 2D is in some way worse than 3D…
I don’t feel that way, one isn’t better than the other, some genres just work better in 2D and some work better in 3D, and some work great in both. As for graphics, a 2D game can look better than a 3D game.
In other words, I’m just hoping for a healthy mix of 2D and 3D (and Virtual Reality games when we get those) in the future.

psn/live work perfectly for 2d games, much better than DS. Each year there are few new ones that sell good, i dunno what he is talking about.

I’m guessing this guy hasn’t played Castle Crashers or BlazBlue.
This argument is like saying to painters that it’s unacceptable to paint using cubism because it doesn’t provide much insight for the viewer.

Man those 2D games on other consoles like the DS and Wii are lightyears ahead of anything on the Xbox Please – Fix – Me. That’s for sure!
360′s graphics are so bad they couldn’t even handle a 2D Game – Boy Colour game let alone something on the Wii. Which is exactly why 360 gets outsold by the competition because games such as Halo and Gears Of War are overrated and sucky!
