I was surprised that Mario & Luigi: Bowser’s Iniside Story won Best Handheld Game, as there were two other games that would have easily won it.
By Crim on Dec 15, 2009
Flower won best OST! I’m surprised! I loved its soundtrack so I’ve been hoping it got some recognition.
By tarbis on Dec 15, 2009
YAY! Uncharted 2 won GOTY. Well deserved =D
By iedifoj on Dec 15, 2009
y wasnt killzone 2 nominated for best shooter?!?!?!?!?!
By iedifoj on Dec 15, 2009
*meant to say best animation
By Razmossis on Dec 15, 2009
I’m sorry, but seriously, Uncharted 2 did NOT have good writing.
I can say this with a straight face, even though I think it definitively is the all round GOTY, and is in my top 3 games for the year – Uncharted is a BIG cliché, the writing is absolutely laughable, the characters are clichéd and one dimensional, the story is basic and straight forward, and the dialogue… lets just say I was almost sick when Drake uttered the words “Now c’mon, I’m through playing the hero” *facepalmed*
Imo, anyone who thinks Uncharted 2′s writing is good hasn’t watched enough movies – good movies.
Slightly off topic, I think that the Single-player in games nowadays should be judged separately. There is already a section for ‘Best multiplayer game’, why not have ‘Best single-player game’ too?
By L.A.C. on Dec 15, 2009
Now this is a more credible list than Spike’s VGAs.
This one I can agree on in alot of the winners chosen.
By Mark on Dec 15, 2009
Not even a nomination on best multiplayer for New Super Mario Bros Wii is a sin. I guess it has to be only to qualify, (Sighs).
By N/A on Dec 16, 2009
The only thing that bothers me slightly is “chinatown wars = best handheld”.
By Alan on Dec 16, 2009
Wow, FAIL at Best Sound Design.
1. Uncharted 2
2. Killzone 2
3. Others
4. Everything Else
Uncharted 2 probably has the best quality sound in a video game I’ve ever heard, and that is including every format and medium. It’s unbelievable in LPCM. I actually looked out my window a couple of times thinking something was happening outside or downstairs. And my stereo would retail for the price of a small car if you want to try to pull that card. It’s not some POS Bose nonsense.
By shadow2797 on Dec 16, 2009
@Razmossis
Movies and videogames are two different things. Uncharted 2 tries to be a cliche adventure movie, and it succeeds. We all know an Indiana Jones movie isn’t going to win an Academy Award. But for videogames, Uncharted has some of the most natural writing around. The fact that you’re comparing Uncharted’s writing to movies and not videogames shows just how great Uncharted’s writing really is. And don’t forget the engaging characters that players actually care about, something most games only dream of doing. Calling them cliched and one dimensional is not giving Uncharted enough credit.
And instead of facepalming at the “*wink*wink*” lines, you could try smiling. Naughty Dog knows it’s cliche, those portions are meant to be subtle nudges to the gamer. Don’t take them so seriously.
And, to turn the tables a bit, Imo, anyone who thinks Uncharted 2′s writing is bad hasn’t played enough games.

shadow2797 has hit the nail on the head, best comment i’ve read for a longwhile.
By 357 Lobster on Dec 16, 2009
Best sound design is fail. Dead Space Extraction should’ve at least been nominated.
By David Macphail on Dec 16, 2009
Uncharted 2 thoroughly deserved to win GOTY. I’m so glad that theese awards are given out to games that excelled in quality rather than games that excelled in hype only (I’m looking at you, Modern Warfare 2).
Although best RPG should’ve gone to either Pokemon Platinum or Demon’s Souls.
By Ash on Dec 16, 2009
Sweet, good to see Demon’s Souls getting some recognition. The MP is truly a game-changer and I think we are going to start seeing a lot more of this sort of thing in the future. At least, I hope we do! I think it would be great in an openworld game (e.g. Crackdown 2?) if you could have this sort of random drop in drop out co-op, and PvP without having to go through a lobby. Imagine that feeling of knowing that another agent with your sort of superpowers has entered the city and is hunting you down!
By o.0 on Dec 16, 2009
again wit pokemon geez it sux dont bring that crap up uhm wares the stradigy games at? wares lil king story? ok then and Knights im the nightmares story beats everything on here =/
By David Macphail on Dec 16, 2009
Pokemon sucks??? I suppose that’s why it’s the second best – selling videogames franchise on the planet and has accumulated sales that make Final Fantasy look unwanted?
By emperoga on Dec 16, 2009
killzone 2 Multiplayer suck
By HaloHappy on Dec 16, 2009
OK, why wasn’t NSMBW’s multiplayer even nominated for gameplay innovation? I mean c’mon, Death perks in CoD? That’s as innovative as changing the colors of a character, in other words a no-brainer. But overall, this kicked the VGA’s as no doubt.
By Joemoreheroes on Dec 16, 2009
G4 is pretty low on my credibility list. They mostly play into hype. The nominees on Gamspy, IGN, and 1 up were far better than these. The other sites prove their credibility as journalists more with their nominees.
By Darkie on Dec 16, 2009
Hahaha 360 exclusives don’t sell which is why they don’t win awards. Only crap games are 360 exclusive, anyone who thinks Halo: Reacharound will save 360 next year is kidding themselves.
By Jawz on Dec 16, 2009
@shadow2797
That was possibly the best comment iv’e read in my entire life. We need more people like you.
By Electric Carp Patrol on Dec 16, 2009
Halo3:ODST and Forza III both sold better than Uncharted 2 did if you want to talk smack about sales.
And what’s this “save 360″ crap? Save it from what? 360 outsold PS3 in Nov despite the price cuts and the great games. It doesn’t really need saving it’s still in a comfortable 2nd place.
Sorry Darkie.
I think that uncharted 2 is a really great game but some of you Sony-only fans are just bitter nuts who can’t handle the fact that your console is still in third and most likely doomed to stay there no matter how much bile you spew.
You guys have lots of great games coming out. Why not be happy and stop taking these lame pot shots at a console that is selling better than yours is? Your console is still doing well and has some great games. No one is stopping you from buying other consoles if you want them. What’s the point of being so silly about this?
BTW your nic is racially offensive slang in some parts. Some of us ‘dark’ complected people might not care for it too much. If you care about that sort of thing.
By Stupidity avobe me on Dec 16, 2009
X Box sold more than PS3??? Yeah, that’s why they didn’t reveal the sales number. So how can you say that crap-box sold more thank PS3?
By Harmy666 on Dec 16, 2009
I dont agree with the GOTY rusult, Call of Duty:Modern Warfare 2 easliy beats Uncharted 2 hands down! all the rest i agree with apart from Best Action/Adventure Game that should have been Batman:Arkham Asylum, Awesome game!!! Apart from that a good year all round for the Xbox 360 and the Playstation 3, even for the Wii!
By john stez on Dec 16, 2009
stop shaking your dicks at each other who gives a flying f*** about which console sells the most just enjoy the games 2009 has been an AMAZING year for gamers, Arkham, Dirt 2, Killzone 2, Assasins Creed 2, Gay tony, Forza, Super Mario Wii, Uncharted 2 (my fav), MW2, Need for Speed shift, FIFA 10… plus more.
and 2010 doesn’t look too bad either whatever console youve got.
peace and goodwill to all gamers
By Funny on Dec 16, 2009
Funny how people can’t believe Uncharted 2 got game of the year, either they haven’t played it or are just disgruntled xbox fanboys. Call of Duty MW2 can’t beat a game with a better story, longer single player gameplay (MW2 at 4hrs lol)and is more of a complete game then just a “multiplayer” game. UC2 is like you’re playing in a movie, has the best graphics hands down, has a good co-op and multiplayer experience. Just because a game sells more doesn’t mean it’s a better “overall” game. I own both consoles btw so no I’m not a sony fanboy but I do agree it’s GOTY there’s nothing as good as this for my xbox.
By H37LZ Assass1n on Dec 16, 2009
i own all three systems and i have to say for the money uncharted 2 beats ODST and Call of Duty any day. Uncharted has the best and funnest gameplay i have seen in a long time. odst was nothing but an expansion pack that was worthless and call of duty being a multiplayer game only was not deserving of the goty award.
By David Macphail on Dec 16, 2009
No, Xbox 360 did not outsell PS3 in November, not worldwide. You 360 fanboys need to stop hiding behind the NPD results and look at the bigger picture, PS3 outsold 360 comfortably in November and will most likely do so this month as well and next month…….also the next month, etc.
By God on Dec 16, 2009
@David Macphail – Pokemon should have died years ago, now its been milked dry.
Anyway, Uncharted 2 deserved GOTY, but what is up with all this fanboyism?
Am I the only person who enjoys playing both Xbox 360 and the PS3?!?
If you’re a fanboy and dissing another console you most likely lack experience of playing it so how can you judge them?
By Electric Carp Patrol on Dec 16, 2009
Show me a link David.
PS3 outsold 360 in Japan only. Everywhere else 360 came out on top. And you know it.
By Tom on Dec 16, 2009
In no way is Borderland the best original game. How have no reviewers even mentioned the fact the game shipped and still remains broken on the PC platform? This makes me seriously loose trust in critics and the value of their opinions. The core of the gameplay (and the whole reason it was even nominated) is for its cooperative aspect, which due to the inclusion of Gamespy does not work at all. To add insult to injury, Gearbox has spent their time and resources on putting out a DLC in an attempt to wring more cash out of suckers rather than getting the game to work in the first place. While I might have granted it the best art direction, which I do appreciate, the game does not function as a working unit and as such should not get any award that assesses merit other than conceptual work.
By Reave on Dec 16, 2009
@Electric Carp Patro
The ps3 had much higher sales numbers in november (worldwide), just do a sales comparison for november at vgchartz.com
By joe on Dec 17, 2009
Uncharted looks good. But people call it an amazing emersive, action adventure epic, and that it isn’t riveled by any game this generation.
Is it a Third Person Shooter or not?
By r4i on Dec 19, 2009
I am also surprised about it i think it will be a cod mw 2 but it wont i think also that gta also deserve that…
