$299.99 placeholder price, 15 games currently showing in Target’s system

Posted on January 10, 2017 by (@NE_Brian) in News, Switch

Earlier today, Best Buy’s internal pricing system listed Switch for $249.99. Target is now throwing its hat into the ring with its own placeholder price of $299.99. That could be an estimate, and thankfully we’ll know in about 48 hours if it’ll be any lower.

On a similar note, Target’s system is listing 15 games for Switch. It’s unclear if that number will expand at all after Thursday’s presentation.

The fact it shows 15 “Wii U Switch Game” probably includes the Wii U games already in the system.

    • Roto Prime

      hmmm, like the ambassador program?!

      • NintendoPSXTheSecond

No, just the Wii U games already in the system.

        • Roto Prime

          the plot chickens…..

    • Storme J Prince

You mean on it’s 32gbs of storage? doubt it.

      • NintendoPSXTheSecond

No, I mean Target’s computer system.

        • Uncle Phil Hug

man the folks who replied to you are dummmmm

          • NintendoPSXTheSecond

            Unfortunately.

    • Jack Red

Could actually be referring to 15 Switch games that’re ported from the Wii U. Like how the Wii had the Play Controls which were Gamecube games ported to the Wii with new control schemes.

I work for a UK game retailer and the Switch itself is showing in our system in the WiiU section. No price on our system yet. I think the ‘wiiu Switch’ thing is just the way someone (dumb) at head office has filed it. If you look on Amazon it’s the same it lists the Switch as ‘Nintendo Switch (WiiU)’

  • Roto Prime

And the beat goes on! Jan 12!!

  • Addy

Is it $250 or $300 retailers? Pick one, and stick with it.

    • ronin4life

Wasn’t the BB listing actually an ‘Update’?
It as discovered in a “Price change report”. Does that mean it was a new entry or was previously entered as something different, like for example $299.99

    • KnightWonder

Placeholder, meaning it’s not the official price.

    • Abra

no way this system will be $300.. it will not sell well if it is.

      • Roto Prime

everyone online knows its going to be $499.99 USD with 1 TB of flash memory.

        • Abra

Hey bro if I end up picking this system up you are gonna be one of the first people I add to my friends list :v looking forward to building a new community of friends around a Nintendo system

          • Roto Prime

Hell ya Abra!! Let’s do this, so stoked for MARCH!!!!

I just care if the system is great. The console could cost 900$ for all I care if it were awesome. But really, on more realistic terms, the price really only needs to reflect the perceived quality of the product. For example, many people though the Wii U was overpriced because it was underpowered and the Gamepad was not perceived to be valuable enough to warrant a 120$ price hike.

If it was 300$ but offered a premium experience and could compete with Sony and Microsoft when docked, then the value would easily be worth it. In other words, it entirely depends on what we get for our money.

        • ForeVision

It makes sense when you think about it. Consoles are made up of parts, akin to a computer, and when it comes to computers, you get what you pay for.

          • Vigilante_blade

Yeah. the price pretty much depends on the quality you got for your buck. For example, if they offered us a freaking titan for 100$, everyone would lose it. Of course, that’s never going to happen, it’s just to illustrate the situation. The Wii U would not have sold well either way, but without the Gamepad jacking up the price, it clearly would have sold a few millions more.

          • ForeVision

Do you think a fairly powerful Switch without unnecessary things in the pack like the gamepad was is feasible?

          • Vigilante_blade

It would possible at this point in time the PS4 pro and XBONE S are extremely underpowered by PC standards. The original versions are so outdated that PC gamers actually complain that consoles are preventing PC ports from reaching acceptable graphic prowess. It would cost Nintendo less to render a system on par with the lowest skew of PS4 than it cost Sony back then. Heck, the NES classic is more powerful than a 3ds because it just costs them less to manufacture newer parts.

Though without AC power, to save battery life, but console must be underclocked. The base however, I imagine will not give processing power but will let the console run t full throttle, not having to worry as much about energy consumption. Depending on how the hardware is made, it could also be possible to iterate in a different way than the competition.

By keeping the Switch’s power the same, but releasing docks that give a graphical boost to the console when docked, they could potentially increase the lobnetivity of the system. They would have to worry about undocked performance though. Alienware has actual. External computing devices. You plug it on a GTX980 laptop and suddenly, you got the power of a Titan home PC. They are expensive though. Then again, Alienware always charges a lot.

Still, I would surmise that gimmickless system always costs less to manufacture. Wii U’s tablet controller as in class of its own when it came to price hikes though.

Why does it say “Wii U Game Switch” ?

    • Roto Prime

Because you touch yourself…. Still mad at you!

  • キロ

Is it that hard to wait now? xD

    • ForeVision

Too busy with Pokemon to have any impatience :P. If people are that impatient, I’d propose they get the Shiny Charm by completing the Alolan Pokedex and then capturing Shiny Mareanie. By the time they’ve completed that, we’ll be at the 13th/14th (unless they’re lucky and get it earlier, or unlucky at which case it may take them 1000+ Pokemon to go through)

      • キロ

Yes, I’ve been working on getting a living Alolan Dex to add to the living dex when Pokebank becomes compatible with the game : )

        • ForeVision

Living Dex? I’ve missed something it seems.

          • キロ

Oh, it’s the term for having each Pokemon in National Dex order on hand/in boxes rather than just registered as caught. : ) Not an actual dex in-game XD

  • bugman83

I always expected at 299.99 for the switch. That I can deal with.

  • Tlink7

…don’t people know what ”placeholder” means?

    • Roto Prime

Never understood it as more then Hype fuel! Let Mortal Combat begin!

    • ForeVision

Aren’t those the rivets that hold my furniture in place? 😛

  • Indielink

I have a buddy who runs a video game shop in Connecticut. I mentioned the BestBuy price update to him yesterday and he said that that was accurate. So that’s what I’m gonna believe.

  • SpectralDynamite

Anywhere from $250-$300 will do just fine.
