Some Metroid: Other M talk from Yoshio Sakamoto

February 3rd, 2010 Posted in News, Posted by Valay, Wii

This information comes from Metroid co-creator Yoshio Sakamoto, who recently spoke with Famitsu…

“This project between three companies, which we call Project M, is progressing extremely well. This Metroid is being developed with the aim of the ideal form of the old Metroid. It’s a game that can be realized because of the Wii. [Addressing Metroid being more successful overseas] However, different from the rest of the series, this time we’re strongly depicting the human side of Samus through such things as movies. She’s a strong woman, but she also has a fragile side. We want to make a game whose charms can be felt from the story areas and these human touches as well. It’s an action game, but it’s capable of having a clear emotional side. A lot of people are playing it, so we’re planning a lot of things. We haven’t clearly finalized a followup or anything, but we’d like to do some new things.”

- Since it’s a big project, there have been a few issues, but the development team has ironed them out together
- Team Ninja moving the “2D jump action game” into “3D action.”
- Sakamoto thinks the quality of the game will please fans
- Sakamoto intends to release the game this year

    Sounds good, seems like there will be a balance between story and action.

    Does anyone else besides me want multiplayer? Online and local would be great in my opinion. (And it is possible to still have great single player)

    Eh, I don’t really think it fits Metroid that well. I guess people said the same about karts and Mario, but still… it’s such a lonely experience, and by adding more players you’re either making Samus (and her suit) less special or you’re adding other hunters, that generally kind of suck.

    So no, I’d rather go for single player only. *Maybe* a co-op option to run through the adventure mode together. But deathmatches etc? meh.

    I see your point. I thought Hunters did a decent job with multiplayer. maybe add some xp stuff and upgrades like COD’s multiplayer and maybe they could pull it off? I like playing with friends . . . but you still have a point there.

    I imagine I’m alone on this, but I’m not very happy about focusing on Samus’ character. Metroid used to remind me of Clint Eastwood’s spaghetti westerns; a mysterious, almost nameless figure blows into town, decides to clean things up, and then goes on, leaving us behind. The Man With No Name and Samus are legendary-almost mythical-characters BECAUSE we know so little about them. These days it seems that everyone is so busy talking about motivation and internal struggles that they forget about mythos.

    No multiplayer please.

    @Hermocrates: I never really thought about it, but I wouldn’t mind Samus being a mytho either.

    @Gavin: Why not?

    Hermocrates: I can understand what you mean, that has always been part of Samus appeal.
