Hidden music in Mario Kart 64

March 6th, 2010 Posted in General Nintendo, News, Posted by Valay

This is pretty neat and something that most Nintendo fans probably aren’t aware of. There’s a small music nugget that comes from the results screen in Mario Kart 64. After about fifty minutes, a different type of loop will play for a minute and a half or so. After that, the music will return to normal. Take a look at the video below to see for yourself!

Why Nintendo would change up the music after fifty minutes is beyond me. But this a nice little secret that Nintendo fans may appreciate!

Ah, love the game, love the blog. But I was hoping for some ridiculous theme to appear, like the DK theme.

    Ah, what relaxing music…

Maybe it had something to do with the original character that was swapped out for Wario. “Magic Koopa”

Well, it has taken approximately 14 years for someone to leave their game on the results screen for 50 minutes. So I’d say that’s to be expected after so long.

Hiya, just saying thanks for helping spread this oddity! My view has changed since I first uploaded it, though: I’m thinking it was more likely hidden by mistake, rather than on purpose (a programming error) – Still cool, nonetheless!

I’ve added annotations and explain my reasoning a bit in the video description.

    Thanks again!

Uh… looks like I’ve got to retract that previous statement. Somebody’s informed me that it plays after the 64th loop of the regular tune – and it does. That’s too coincidental to not be on purpose!

I couldn’t even notice anything much different. I think the reason it’s after 50mins was definitely a bug, and it was supposed to be 50 seconds or something.
