Pachter predicts that Netflix on Wii won’t be as popular as it is on the PS3/360
April 22nd, 2010 Posted in News, Posted by Valay, Wii“In our opinion, Netflix on the Wii will not be as popular as it is on the Xbox 360 and the PS3 for two main reasons: the lack of HD on the Wii, and the limited number of Wii users connected to the Internet. Further, the Wii audience has demonstrated little commitment to buying videogames (attach rates are at historical console lows), leading us to suspect that many Wiis are relegated to the playroom or (heaven forbid) the closet.” – Wedbush analyst Michael Pachter
I think it’s too early to tell if Netflix will be a success on Wii. But we learned a few weeks ago that Netflix Vice President of Corporate Communications Steve Swasey believes that the lack of HD for Nintendo’s console won’t have a negative impact.

I really don’t like this Pachter fellow…
hahaha
Everything he says is always some sort of put down towards Nintendo. I’m part of the “Wii audience”, and I demonstrate a fine commitment to buying video games
And just to spite him, I’m thinking I want to pick up a Netflix disc
By Dominic Powell on Apr 22, 2010
Pachter is an idiot. NSMB wii proves his buying games point moot… Netflix record subscription quarter… Beating every analysts estimate must coincide with the Wii and not the Ipad

I think tons of people already know to ignore this stupid Patcher guy; he’s like the worst anylist out there period!

This analysists are paid by Sony & Microsoft to go against Nintendo.
I rememember before the Wii came out all this analysists were saying that Nintendo was going to lose this generation & be in third while the PS3 was going to be #1.
& after the Wii has been #1 since it came out, they never said a thing anymore because they know thier screwed up.
But that isn’t enough, while the Wii had already sold like 30million & the PS3 like 10million like in 2008 an idiot said that like in a year or like in a few months the PS3 was going to kick the Wii’s ass because of the release of some hardcore games, which didn’t happen.
And now everytime Nintendo releases something these analysists, who are surely given free stuff by Sony & Microsoft and are paid to say these things, release this press releases saying that Nintedo will fail soon, why they say it? Who cares what a person who is not a furtune teller, & if he was that shit doesn’t exist, has to say about the future? & who is he? He gets paid just to predict the future? What a lazy ass job!
And now this guy come here saying that & I remember watching an article on IGN recently saying that that Netflix in the Wii is A LOT better than the one in the PS3 & the Xbox360, so take that analyst who’s job is just to sit there & predict the future of gaming companies like if you had the power to know what will happen in the future! That’s crazy shit!

he is payed by ether sony or microsoft or both or and 3rd partys
the company he works for have a disclaimer connecting them to company’s in gaming so its clear pachter is saying stuff his told to say
TALK ABOUT A DUSHBAG JOB
the entire games industry is being disrupted by nintendo and there shit scared of nintendo and are trying to stop it
ds beats psp software sales 8 to 1
ps3 has like 15% of revenue conpared to 48 to 50% for wii
nintendo is the most profitable company on earth per employee
sony are operating at huge operating loss and ps3 and hd tvs etc have lost sony billions and billions
3rd partys are just surviving EA operating at loss for like the past 2/3 years
activitions cod success days are over it will now decline
nintendo is still growing and supe4r profiting
3DS is going to damage the industry still futher and seriously hurt psp and ps3 in 2011
pachter is the industrys ANTI DISRUPTION AGENT ITS ACTUALLY RATHER PATHETIC
By JoshZTP2 on Apr 23, 2010
The world of video gaming would seriously be a better place without anylists period… including that stupid “why do we ever care about” Patcher guy!

The guy is dead wrong. The Wii is the machine that is in our family room and hooked to the big plasma at our house. it is basically the kids machine. we also have 2 PS3. We have also have had Netflix for 5 year+ and did not start using the Watch instantly feature till we received our disk for the Wii and started using it on it.
We have purchased well over 15 Titles for the Wii while Each PS3 has 4 titles each COD 4,5,6 and 1st Bad Company.
We buy and have spent way more for the Wii and since they removed OtherOs we have stayed at 3.15 and have given up on the PS3 we will not be using them again for gaming as its going right now. (and yes I have Linux on the machines and used it.) They will remain Linux boxes so our decision was to keep it. so Sony has basically just lost any more purchases from us.
The Guy is daft.

Since when was it even good on ps3? 360 is the only one netflix is and will ever be successful on. At least you were right about the wii part.
By Dave on Apr 25, 2010
I signed up for Netflix so I could get the disc to use with the Wii. I think it’s a no-brainer considering the Wii is wireless-internet ready. I have a 360, but I’m not going to blow $70 on an adapter to get it on the internet, or pay to have network lines ran in my house to it. We looked through the selections they have, and there’s a lot of family friendly titles. Perfect for a console like the Wii.
By Jim on Apr 25, 2010
I’ve had this on my xbox for over a year and never used it because I could never hear the movie over the fan noise. Finally with the wii disc I can watch a streaming movie without it sounding like a tornado the whole time.
By Tweetanator on Apr 25, 2010
We just got Netflix on our Wii and we love it. It allows us to stream onto our non-hd tv in the living room. Quite nice.
By JHo3000 on Apr 25, 2010
I was amazed by the quality of the Netflix stream on the Wii. You cannot tell it is not HD unless you are 12 inches from the screen. I have it going into a 42″ 1080p Sony Bravia.
It looks great, loads quickly, and is easy to use! Way better and cheaper than cable.
Suck it Michael Pachter! You’re just trying to sway the market…
By wckdjugallo on Apr 25, 2010
I just had to put in my two cents. I have a Wii and PS3 both hooked up to my HD TV in the living room. I had been using Netflix on the PS3 with numerous issues. Hogging all bandwith on my home network, lagging and locking up while streaming unless it was hooked up physically to my router and finally it just stopped working totally (only netflix everything else on my PS3 works perfectly). I ordered the Wii Netflix disc and could not be happier. The interface just feels better and I have no playback issues. Overall I must say this analyst is wrong I love Netflix on Wii and I am sure I am not alone.
By Jonathan Rygar on Apr 25, 2010
you guys get butthurt way too easily.
@Dominic Powell – one games’ sales has nothing to do with the console’s overall attach rate.
@Alosjs – no HD and a disc is required to boot the program. i’d love to hear a single valid reason on why Netflix on the wii is better than the 360.
@WIIboy101 – learn to write coherent sentences if you want to be taken seriously.
@Michael – your house is not a microcosm for the entire industry.
@Jim – your speakers must be the size of a thimble.
@JHo3000 – i sincerely doubt the difference between HD and standard is imperceptible.
By Reality Check on Apr 25, 2010
Guys, I own both an xbox and a wii. I have no skin in this game. I have to say, some of the comments here (attacking the analyst) are a bit of a stretch (e.g., that he is a payed shill of MSFT or SONY).
The analyst makes some good points.
* The reality is that attach rates for Wii consoles are extremely low. Once people make that initial console purchase plus a few starter games and then start looking at the universe of games available (i.e., NOT available), the number of games purchases falls dramatically. Especially outside of Nintendo-developed titles.
* A lot of Wii users–especially the casual users, who make up a huge portion of the fanbase–have never successfully connected their console to the internet. This isn’t only the users’ fault: the Wii has had some historic issues with wireless connectivity in particular.
* Finally, the reality is that Wii isn’t an HD console, which means it is less likely to be attached to an HD-tv, which means that, all in all, people are going to be less likely to be watching movies on the TV. Personally, my Wii is in my study, on a ?32″? flat. Especially at the res that the Wii is at, that’s a perfect size. But I sure don’t watch Blu-Rays in there. If I want to watch videos, I go into the media room or the family room. I can’t be alone in that pattern of media usage.

At first I was like, wow what a bunch of irrational people, then I looked at the URL and noticed it was a Nintendo themed website. Way to go fanboys, blindly stand behind the Wii no matter what reality is. Congradulations to Nintendo for creating one of the best selling consoles in history but that does change the fact that the attachment rate for this system is not very good. I own one and constantly find myself playing something else. Not for lack of interest but publishers simply have not created enough compelling content for it; well at least content that suits my style. That being said it doesn’t mean Netflix won’t thrive, Pachter simply stated it won’t be as popular.
Plus he’s an anaylst not a fortune teller. It’s impossible for someone to predict the future, only use the information at hand to make the best possible decision.
Some of you really need to grow up and know the facts before you post nonsense like wiiboy101.
As for where my loyaties lie? I have all three systems and am happier for it. I don’t have to sit in a corner and blast the others because I’m jealous at what they have. Each system has it’s place in this ecosystem of gaming and we should be thankful we have such a varied and thriving industry.
By Wishbone on Apr 26, 2010
I own all three systems, and have used them all to view Netflix movies / shows. The PS3 is so slow loading and constantly stopping to catch up. The Wii works well, but will only be used for non HD shows or when we don’t have access to the HD television (son downstairs playing games). The Xbox 360 is the system of choice due to being able to play shows in HD and not have slow loading times and connection issues.
By Chris on Apr 26, 2010
Who wants to try and squeeze an HD signal down their Internet connection when three other devices are trying to use the same pipe at the same time? Our Wii has been in near-constant use since the Netflix disc arrived. The standard def signal flies across our wireless network, and none of the other computers are suffering. And the vid quality is just fine, thanks, especially since most of what we’re watching isn’t available in HD anyway. If we want something in HD, we’ll put it on the Netflix wish list.
Conclusion: ignorant analysis based on preconceptions, not facts.
By Gadgets on Apr 26, 2010
well, the reason that Wii sales are at an alltime low is that the console is so easily modded and that nearly every single game can be found on bit torrent for free. People won’t buy what they can get for free, and there are dozens of guys in every community that will mod your box for you for as little as $20-$50
By download movies on Apr 26, 2010
Oh I dunno, it seems be be succeeding very well on my TV as I type this. In fact, the release of the Wii Netflix disc is what compelled me to sign back up with them. While it doesn’t offer “true” HD, the quality is excellent considering it is streaming from the internet.
By Brandon on Apr 26, 2010
@ Jonathan Rygar – The voice of reason.
@ Chris – HD comes across my network just fine, even when I have background downloads with 2 other computers on. It’s an apt analysis, it is based on facts regardless of whether or not you believe them. To repeat Jonathan, “Your household is not a microcosm for the entire industry”
These are the most ignorant fanboy comments I’ve ever read.
We get it you have a Wii and you like your netflix, but you don’t represent the majority of Wii owners. The majority of Wii owners are “casual” gamers who have bought the system with a few party games and then rarely use it for anything else. It’s a fact.
…Or maybe every analyst who says something not in favour of the Wii is paid off by Microsoft AND Sony.
Hehe
By Brroke on Apr 26, 2010
doubt it.
1. most of netflix’s instant watch selection isn’t in hd anyway.
2. most people don’t have fast enough internet to stream hd
3. every indication is that *most* people don’t know or don’t care much about HD content, even if they have HD televisions. hell.. walk into any store and look at the wall of tv’s.. they’re almost never displaying HD content.. and people stand there and gawk at “how good the picture is!”
4. if picture quality is THAT important, you’re not going to be streaming movies anyway

480p is just fine for the majority of people. a lot of people couldn’t tell 480p from 720p anyway.
as far as the limited % of users who have their wii’s connected online.. i think its reasonable to think that maybe they never had a reason to. i don’t think it’s unbelievable that they would sign on *just* to use netflix

“Further, the Wii audience has demonstrated little commitment to buying videogames”
Thats because 90% of wii games are complete shit aimed at little kids and old people. The other 10% are sold out so quickly you end up having to buy them online here.
