Rockstar on why they’re not making GTA for Wii, DS instead

September 20th, 2008 Posted in DS, News, Posted by Brian, Wii

In an interview with Nintendo Power, Rockstar Games cofounder Dan Houser explained why the company decided to to move the Grand Theft Auto series to the DS rather than the Wii. He states that “it didn’t really feel natural” to Rockstar and that “the DS felt like it had a lot of interesting challenges that would be totally different” than what the company has previously done.

Full question/answer below:

Q: It seems like a more natural progression for the series to move to Wii rather than the DS. Is there any reason why you didn’t take it there first?

A: It didn’t feel natural to us, I guess. It really was that the DS felt like it had a lot of interesting challenges that would be totally different from what we’d done in the past. The stylus and the chance to use minigames in that way was really interesting and exciting to us, and we thought we could integrate seamlessly between those two modes. And it would be the chance to make something really good on a handheld with our handheld-focused team. That was really why we went that way. We haven’t really done any concrete, major thinking about the Wii, one way or another. They’re sort of separate issues.

    I think it would be the best and the worst idea in GTA history to move to the Wii.

    Imagine: you have a time limit to prepare weapons before the start of a mission. (game requires certain addons for the wii controller).

    * snipe mission with a gun add-on.
    * Samurai mission with a sword/fishing rod add-on.
    * Driving missions with steering wheel add-on

    People would get so into the game that it would be too real..
    The less mentaly stable people would get into it far too much and kill people in real life (not that it doesn’t happen allready)

    Being a fan of GTA from the first on the PSX, I can honestly say that I would love to see the migration, I don’t have a Wii but I may consider it if GTA was on it, especialy with online possibilities. But I think the realism would be a moral dilema for rockstar who already get the blame for every mad man.

    Shame for us normal people that psychos ruin our fun.

    I dont know if it would be too real for other poeple. (the non-normal) ones. Perhaps GTA should put together some kind of a vetting system, and before you are able to purchase GTA for the wii, you need to pass the test to ensure you wont go crazy.
