Castlevania producer: No Lords of Shadow for Wii/DS to avoid “family friendly version”

June 10th, 2010 Posted in DS, News, Posted by Valay, Wii

The Castlevania series has been well represented on Nintendo systems, especially in recent years. Three titles in the franchise have been released on the DS while the Wii has been treated to an original fighter as well as a number of classic games made through the Wii Shop Channel. The latest Castlevania title, Lords of Shadow, was announced two years ago, but there was never even a peep that it would ever come to the Wii or DS.

So, why was did the developers decided against creating a different version for either Nintendo system? According to Lords of Shadow producer Dave Cox, the team “didn’t want to do a family friendly version.”

“…The reason we didn’t do Wii or DS, or anything else like that, is because we wanted to bring it into the mainstream. And in many ways mainstream gaming is Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3. We didn’t want to do a family friendly version. This is a pretty dark game and just wouldn’t work on the Nintendo systems.”

That’s either BS or the Nintendo needs to get their head out of their ass and release some mature games that are good.

Don’t you just love the look the wii gets family friendly. Good job nintendo, you will alwasy miss out on the great 3rd party games like AC2 and CV in 3D.

Considering there are a quite a few Mature titles on the Wii (MadWorld, Cursed Mountain, No More Heroes 1-2, Manhunt 2 -just to name a few), I am calling straight B.S. on this. The reality is, they didn’t want to have to port it to the Wii, and they weren’t willing to put up the money for a separate team to build it specifically for the Wii.

    good!
now they wouldn’t have to waste time making a censor version:/

Not to be obvious..but castlevania has been on nintendo consoles forever…and i dont remember when it hasn’t been family friendly. Its usually always over the top…and blood is few and far between. What they are trying to create is something that is not Castlevania. I think the main reason they are doing this is because they want to go for the other group…the hardcore because there are two systems they can sell on…though with the DS I’m not sure why they didn’t bother with it…Castlevania always seems to be a huge hit on the DS…Wii would be a different story…mature doesnt sell well on the wii…but I always buy all mature titles…they are the only good ones really…outside of the 1st party nintendo titles.

Lord of Shadows is no real Castlevania game! Kojima is screwing it up like shit!(But Snatcher is still awesome!)
So in fact you can say the title is wrong because Fuckfaces of Shadows is no Castlevania^^

Lols. I think this comment is Marketing. It’s seems pretty strategic. It’s pandering to owners of the X-Box 360 and PS3… It’s the kind of comment online nergwardos (owners of X-Box and PS3) will masturbate to for years to come!

    Laughter out loud!

    That is a fact sir

I think you people are all going overboard with this whole thing! I think calling it names is a terrible thing; & I think you need to grow up! :(

Another is we all knew this Castlevania was going to stay 360 & PS3 exclussive! It doesn’t matter if there is not a Wii version; or that the producer of Castlevania Lord of Shadows said that about the Wii being “family friendly”! If this Castlevania is supposed to be as dark as they say it is; then let it be! :P

I was never interested in this Castlevania Lord of Shadows in the first place; being only for 360 & PS3! I’m a proud Wii/DS owner & rather love all of my Castlevania titles on Nintendo platforms only! ;)

This quote is hilarious. It’s coming from some paid businessman, people. Move along.

Good. I’d rather them focus on just one version of the game instead of having to have a watered-down family-friendly version that takes development time away from the primary game.

…How dare you refer to Castle May Cry God Of Gaiden Shadows Inferno in such a manner. ;)

It’s kinda funny since some of the greatest Castelavia games were on GBA and the DS. But it’s not Konami that it’s making that game but MercurySteam and I guess they are trying to play it “cool”. I’ll get it for my PS3 since its a Castlevania game and I’m a fanboy but I’m afraid I’ll be playing God of War Dracula version instead of a Castlevania game.

Oh and btw for those how say that mature games dont sell on Wii and give Madworld as an example… have you actually played that game? Its a repetitive, boring grindfest (you are grinding for points by killing stuff in stylish ways to advance). I like its artistic style… but just that!

I don’t know about this dumb crap. That’s like MSoft not wanting Okami on 360 because it would need more blood. Derp.

Lords of Shadow is nothing to worry about – the game’s Castlevania in name only. A generic western fantasy hack and slasher that they retooled and slapped the Castlevania name onto after they realized the game was going to fail. It’s still going to be awful, even after the retooling. And it’s just another in the long line of decisions from Konami in the line that’s led to their seeking new ownership now.

That said, yeah, we can ignore this guy. He’s a western paid businessman – as Waluigus pointed out – not anyone who matters in any way when it comes to Castlevania as a series. Koji Igarashi knows where the Castlevania audience is – the series thrives in 2D on Nintendo platforms. It’s never done well in 3D, and as a longtime Castlevania fan, this particular game is an embarrassment to the franchise and Konami – of course you’d expect the usual “hurp durp Wii is kiddy” jab at Nintendo from a paid suit. That strategy hasn’t served the industry – and certainly not Konami – well at all this gen.

this quote is such a slap in the face, to the speaker. the wii/ds HAS dark, mature games and apparently they don’t count for nuts in his books.

  20. By Aoku on Jul 24, 2010

What? I was stunned about this crap, What does it mean “family freindly” who gives a crap about family friendlyness? If i understood correctly this guy said that wii has only “family friendly” and non-dark games? how would you then define games like Resident Evil, Mad World. Family friendly and bright huh?

What is this man saying? A misserable pile of shit! And no… I won’t regret these words hahaha!!
    I just can’t belive what I’ve just read ¬¬

OK! SO BE IT!!! Let’s see if you say the very same statetements to the Nintendo 3DS wich already has more “mature-not-so-family” games HAHAAH!!!!!

    HERE’S TRUE POWAAAAA!!!!!!!!!

    >=P

  22. By Metafaniel on Aug 19, 2010

@Ponkotsu You’re absolutely right my friend! But let’s see if he says the same with the Nintendo 3DS that already has a lot mature games. Let’s see him eat his own words >=) >XD

  23. By Necrophageon on Jun 11, 2011

Seriously? Does anyone remember Castlevania on the N64? As far as I’m concerned, they can have it and keep pretending it’s good because it has blood. I won’t be feeling left out.
The move to 3D has benefited a few genres, but platformers are NOT one of them IMO. I hope all the “hardcore” gamers really enjoy this one. Suckers.
