Sonic Colors “not really a game for the core gamers,” says producer

August 12th, 2010 Posted in DS, News, Posted by Valay, Wii

This information comes from Sonic Colors producer Takashi Iizuka…

“We know there are sometimes opinions about control from core gamers, but we’re intending Sonic Colours to be played by children of probably between six and twelve years-old. So, with Sonic Colours we have aimed more to make a game that everyone can control and have fun in. So, it’s not really a game for the core gamers. If you take the rail grind, it’s something that’s fast, not difficult but is fun to do and looks great. It’s about making a game that’s right for the core audience of the game.”

Even if this is true, I don’t know why Iizuka would say something like that. Such comments could very easily alienate hardcore Sonic fans who have been interested in purchasing the game. With that said, I suppose a well-made Sonic gamed aimed at children is better than a low-quality release. That is, if Sonic Colors is actually decent!

I’ve never been a big fan of Sonic games actually, although I’ve always liked Sonic himself as a character. I’ll definitely give this one a try though, it just looks too gorgeous to pass up. If I like it, I’ll keep it. If not, I’ll put it on ebay. ^_^

I’m a little interested at the quote, and I don’t think that it was meant to be interpreted in such a way. The simplicity of the game’s controls is what he’s highlighting here, and gameplay videos show this as well. The lack of extra buttons being used to jump from rail-to-rail, the twisting of the Wiimote to drift around curves- it all has a very simple vibe to it, and I honestly don’t think that’s a bad thing. It’s the exact same reason you can do so much in Super Mario Galaxy by using A, B, and Shaking the Wiimote- its a game that can be played by those of all ages because of the simple design of the controls. So I think it was an attempt to explain why the controls are simpler that came of as “this is a game for kids” rather than “this is a game everyone can enjoy” because simplified controls don’t really mean a disconnect with the age groups.

However, the gameplay itself is the deal breaker, and it’s up to how it plays to prove if it’s a game that all ages can enjoy. We’ll only know that when we get our hands on the game.

Why do so may devs these days seem to think that because they want a game to appeal to kids, it has to be a pile of rubbish that plays itself and offers no challenge?
I started playing the original Sonic games on Mega Drive before I could walk (I’m not even exaggerating)and remember even completing them as a young kid just fine, and loving every second of it.

Even today, I have younger siblings who love playing the games on Sonic Mega Collection. The same siblings have tried playing Sonic and the Secret Rings, and gave up in minutes, if not seconds. Just because they’re kids, doesn’t mean they don’t know crap when they see it. Take a leaf out of Nintendo’s book, Sega. They still know how to make a game that’s genuinely fun for EVERYONE, no matter what your age.

I actually have liked the look of Sonic Colours from what I’ve seen so far, bar the horrible soundtrack. My hopes have been pretty much destroyed after reading this. Well, not that I didn’t expect this moment to come at some point, after the last 10 years of 3D Sonic games have all disappointed.

Wasn’t Sonic always meant to be simple? The first one used nothing but a D-pad and a single button for jumping.

Somehow, I have a feeling this won’t be as big a deal as people will inevitably make comments like this out to be. I’m betting that Sonic fans will enjoy it regardless. It’s the gameplay footage so far that’s sold me, and comments like this don’t make my interest dry up.
