New SaGa game unveiled in Famitsu

August 31st, 2010 Posted in DS, News, Posted by Valay

Square Enix opened up a countdown site for a new SaGa game just a few days ago. Unsurprisingly, Famitsu has revealed the title in their latest issue. I’m not 100% sure of this at the moment, but it appears that the title is a remake of SaGa 3 for the DS. You may remember that Final Fantasy Legend II was also remade for the portable. That’s all the information we have currently, but you can expect the floodgates to open very soon.

Wow. I never expected to see Square remake one of their western release oriented branch’s games from the old days. I wonder if we’d ever see a shot at a new take on Secret of Evermore or Final Fantasy Mystic Quest now, the latter of which was developed by the same team that made SaGa 3. This was the only Gameboy SaGa game I beat as a kid, never having been able to finish the first two. I’d love to see these remakes of 2 and 3 either come west on the DS, or if it’s too late, get a collected release on the 3DS or something like that. The Gameboy SaGa games were a big part of my childhood RPG addiction, and it’s been disheartening seeing the remake of 2 getting left in Japan so far in lieu of Square’s barely giving any non-Kingdom Hearts JRPG support these days, let alone much of anything to Nintendo platforms, while continuing to push games by the crumbling western teams they snapped up that still go on to not sell well, crumbling within Square for the same reason they were before their acquisition. Some incredibly poor business decisions in recent years as they try to reinvent themselves by simply buying failing western developers and publishers and continuing with what was killing them unabated. It’s depressing how so few people have any clue how to do business in gaming anymore – the industry really is set on self-destructing with the Playstation and Xbox brands.
