Miyamoto explains why coins made it into Super Mario Bros.

December 22nd, 2010 Posted in General Nintendo, News, Posted by Brian

Mario and coins essentially go hand in hand. Although one can argue that they aren’t the most crucial element to the series, the games certainly wouldn’t be the same without them. So, could you imagine coins being replaced with fruit?

Shigeru Miyamoto revealed that this was considered for Super Mario Bros. He explained in a recent edition of Iwata Asks that, although he believed fruit would have been a fine choice, players might run away from the fruit as a result of confusion. I suppose this makes sense, as a coin is an object that gamers would be more interested in collecting.

“Thus, when we were thinking about something that anybody would look at and go ‘I definitely want that!’, we thought, ‘Yep, it’s gotta be money.’”

Yeah, I already saw this on GoNintendo! Kind of slow on the update huh Nintendo Everything?! :P

on subject: I like sounds coins make in Mario games; but fruit sounds pretty funny! Miyamoto is hilarious at times! :)

    BTW:

Speaking of fruit… I just almost completed DKC Returns! I finished getting the last of the puzzle pieces & collected the final orbs to unlock the World 9 golden temple! I was amazed & like OMFG when I saw DK get transported, (using the insides of the Golden banana); to a world of giant bananas, strawberries, blue berries, & exploxing cherries on sticks LOL! The world is tough too man! ;)

It is just weird that Shigeru Miyamoto would have been worried that players would have avoided fruit given that fruit was a common bonus item in SEVERAL of the most popular arcade games of the early 80s…including Donkey Kong Jr…made by none other than Shigeru Miyamoto
