Rumor: 3DS is region-locked
January 11th, 2011 Posted in 3DS, Posted by Brian, RumorsAccording to a Nintendo of Japan customer service representative, the 3DS will be region-locked. This means that if you import a Japanese system and attempt to play a North American game, it simply will not work.
As disappointing as the news is, I don’t think this should be a big surprise to anyone. After the DSi implemented region locking, there really was no going back. Nintendo has yet to officially comment on the issue, but I’d say this rumor is very likely.

There may be a rationale for the region-locking for both the DSi and 3DS as Nintendo does not want North American users to purchase Japanese games and Japanese users to purchase usually cheaper North American games (a practice called “reverse importing” which may be a disadvange for the Japanese side). Like for DVD, there is a rationale for keeping game systems region-locked.

Shame! We better get amazing titles like Rhythm Tengoku 3DS here.
And that rationale makes sense from the developers side, of course, but not from a consumer’s side.

Is there really any benefit to region locking it? Really?
