They are sorted by release date, it seems. For example, Super Mario Galaxy 2 and Picross 3D are scrunched together, but that is because they both came out in the same month.

Regarding the Game Informer list, this is not based on ranking, but based on North American release date. Mass Effect 2 was the earliest game released in 2010 on the list, and World of Warcraft: Cataclysm was the last game released on the list.
