Iwata’s letter to current 3DS owners regarding price drop

August 2nd, 2011 Posted in 3DS, News, Posted by Valay

Nintendo president Satoru Iwata delivered a speech regarding the 3DS’ price drop at the Q&A portion of the company’s financial results briefing last week. You can read that here if you missed it.

In addition to that, though, Iwata also sent out a letter for the public to read, apologizing for those who “betrayed and criticize this decision.” That letter was written in Japanese and was not published by Nintendo of America/Europe. However, the letter has now been fully translated. Iwata comes across as being quite honest and it’s a great read overall, so I highly recommend that you guys check it out.

Head past the break for the translation.

To Those Customers Who Bought A Nintendo 3DS Before The Price Change

Greetings, everyone. This is Satoru Iwata from Nintendo.

Thank you very much for purchasing a Nintendo 3DS.

We have just announced a price drop for the Nintendo 3DS system effective on August 11 [August 12 in North America].

In the past, there have been price drops for video game systems some time after their release in order to broaden the user base further. However, never before has Nintendo chosen to issue such a dramatic price drop less than 6 months after a system release.

We are all too keenly aware that those of you who supported us by purchasing the 3DS in the beginning may feel betrayed and criticize this decision.

This unprecedented timing for a price cut is because the situation has changed greatly since we originally launched the 3DS. We decided it was necessary to take this drastic step in order to ensure that large numbers of users will continue to enjoy the 3DS in the future.

If the software creators and those on the retail side are not confident that the Nintendo 3DS is a worthy successor to the DS and will achieve a similarly broad (user) base, it will be impossible for the 3DS to gain popularity, acquire a wide range of software, and eventually create the product cycle necessary for everyone to be satisfied with the system.

Those customers who purchased the 3DS at the very beginning are extremely important to us. We know that there is nothing we can do to completely make up for the feeling that you are being punished for buying the system early. Still, we would like to offer the following as a sign of our appreciation to you.

[3DS Ambassador program details]

We feel a strong responsibility to develop the 3DS as a platform — to ensure that, in the end, everyone is satisfied; we will make every effort to do so.

Additionally, we know everyone is waiting for Super Mario 3D Land and Mario Kart 7. They are scheduled for release in November and December, respectively, so we ask for your patience until then.

Thank you again, and we look forward to your continued support.

Not to worry Mr. Iwata, I’m very happy to have bought my 3DS on day one and the ambassador program only makes me happier to have done so =].

This shows his loyalty to Nintendo fans that help support his company. This was a good public relations move and shows he is a respectable guy. He is doing what’s best for his company,3rd parties, retail chains and Nintendo customers. This is what a good business man does. Some fans may be dissapointed but at least they are giving you something because you were first. I never heard any company ever do that before. Nintendo gave 3rd parties their chance at launching with no significant Nintendo IP to stop 3rd party sales and they all failed with their launch games. SSF4 was the best game out and it was a port and not even the final version (AE) :/ 3rd parties better wake up and start bringing their A game to Nintendo platforms because they are affecting everyone now. If they screw up the Wii U launch I will lose faith in not Nintendo, but 3rd parties!!!

I need to give Iwata a solid bro-shake, maybe even a staunch man-hug. He’s way more Boss then I could ever be.

Lead us to V *throws it up*

Communicating to customers why you are doing what you are doing is a great way to show that you respect and care about the needs and wants of your customers. Thank you for explaining why you needed to cut the price of the Nintendo 3DS.

Please, do the same for Operation Rainfall. Please give us your explanation as to why you have no plans to release Xenoblade, The Last Story, or Pandora’s Tower to North America, even though localization has already been done for Europe.

If you explain this to us in the same manner that you explained the price cut, Nintendo will have a better relationship with its customers. Thank you.
