Is this the official Zelda timeline?
December 21st, 2011 Posted in General Nintendo, Posted by Valay, Rumors
There is some talk that the official Zelda timeline has been revealed inside the pages of Hyrule Historia.
This is how it goes, supposedly:
Skyward Sword
|
Minish Cap
|
Four Sword
|
Ocarina of Time (Split in to three time lines)
A: Where Hero of Time Fail
B: Where Hero of Time Wins (sent 7yr back)
C: Where Hero of Time Wins (present)
A
Link to the Past
|
Oracle
|
Link Awaken
|
Zelda 1
|
Zelda 2 Link’s Adventure
B
Majora’s Mask
|
Twilight Princess
|
Four Sword +
C
Wind Waker
|
Hourglass
|
Spirit Tracks
It is possible that the timeline is covered in this book as it covers a great deal of Zelda information. Still, we know how hesitant Nintendo has been to share any information relating to the sequence of games. And if the timeline is discussed in Hyrule Historia, it isn’t clear if someone simply fabricated it.
It’d be great if we could receive a confirmation about this soon.
Thanks to Littsu for the tip!

This time line looks like shit, no way this is the real one.

A third timeline? I never considered that. This is weird.
And you know that if an official timeline is ever revealed that people will hate it, no matter what it is.

It’s fake, Links Awakening is a direct sequel to Zelda 2, not a prequel to Zelda 1.

How do you know LA is after Zelda 2? Why do you think that? It could go after pretty much any Zelda game.
I never considered a third timeline either, but it doesn’t make sense, does it? In LttP, the legend goes that Ganon WAS sealed away, so how could Link have failed?

The running theory was that LA took place half way between the story of Z2, at the point were you first take the raft to another continent.
It wasn’t the most ideal, or even a normal theory, but it fit best given the knowledge that had to be worked with.
With the timeline stuff, you got to understand that any inconsistencys can be explained away by a as of yet un-existing game.
But yea, the third timeline thing is interesting. Though as I haven’t thought much about it, I don’t know how well it works. Nintendos word on the timeline is final and everything, but with timeline stuff like this, they can’t be relied on to match up everything perfectly. There’s been a lot of data made for the Zelda universe over the years, I doubt they keep notes or ever really had a clear timeline plan to match things up in one. And their not likely going to pay someone to sift through all the data and make sure everything makes sense even now.
Honestly, this timeline is probably derived from fan timelines, even if it ends up being official.

Adding a third timeline seems ludicrous, and two was confusing enough.

Interesting idea about LA being in the middle of Zelda 2. I didn’t know about that. However, it’s not a sure thing and the game could be placed just about anywhere.
One thing I always keep in mind is that every game is a legend passed down verbally for generations. That means the story and details we get may be morphed slightly, explaining minor inconsistencies.
After a certain point (probably OoT, since it was meant to be the backstory of LttP), I definitely believe the Zelda team at Nintendo DID make notes and consult the timeline to make sure their games fit in. Where I think problems could have arisen is when 3rd parties made games. All Capcom’s games are the most likely to not fit in very well.
