Rumor: Nintendo working on 3DS Lite
January 4th, 2012 Posted in 3DS, Posted by Valay, Rumors
Japanese publication Nikkei Trendy has reported on two new rumors today. One of them pertains to the 3DS.
The site reports that Nintendo is in the process of creating a “follow-up” of sorts to the 3DS. Specifically, it seems as though the Big N is working on a 3DS Lite. The new system would feature an enhanced battery and would be thinner than the current 3DS.
If Nintendo is going in this direction, it wouldn’t be at all surprising. Both the Game Boy Advance and the DS saw numerous iterations that improved on initial hardware.
For now, this report should be treated as a rumor. Having said that, Nikkei has known to be quite accurate in the past.

Hopefully they add the right analog/nub if the 3DS Lite is really in development….

Unless a new iteration comes out with a second circle pad built in, I won’t be upgrading from my original 3DS.

Groan; and I only got mine this past holiday.

I have had my 3DS since launch, but I do not think I will give it up unless Nintendo gives me a really good reason to get the new one.
The way they upgraded the original DS made sense. The DS Lite seemed necessary to make up for the original’s bulkiness, and the DSi was an appropriate precursor to the 3DS with its camera and online shop, as well as improving on the Lite’s design. As long as we do not see a 3DSi XL, I think this generation of handhelds will not make me shake my head until it comes loose. I had my DSi at its launch, so I had it almost a year when they announced the DSi XL. I was just glad that it did not outclass my DSi but was just a bulky iteration, a backwards version of the GBA Micro. Still, we saw for versions of the DS, and that made me and many people wonder if they should even get a 3DS and not wait until the 3DS Lite, and I think Nintendo weakened its 3DS brand by upgrading the DS brand so often. Many people are waiting for the 3DS Lite, as they were with a price drop.

I kinda doubt they will this soon, but hey, it could happen. Though, the slide pad looks to make the console feel a lot better in my hands. I’m more excited for the comfort than the second stick. Being a lefty does make that second stick look pretty good though.
lol

With the 3DS selling pretty fast right now, i dont think they’ll release the ’3DS lite’ just yet. And if they do, it’ll probably be in the middle of 2013.
Btw Valay, this rumor is from Nikkei Trendy, not the financial publication Nikkei itself.

The 3DS is doing very well lately. But yes they might be working on a 3DS Lite, but they will release it only when 3DS sales are getting poor again, which won’t be before 2013, as hardware always sells at its best in its second year.

Apparently it’s not even a rumour but just speculation… “Will 3DS Lite Make an Appearance? To continue the spread/momentum, a version addressing the ‘weak points’ (thickness, runtime) is a possibility.”
By npmario on Jan 4, 2012
yup, this isnt a report. this is just nikkei giving there speculation as to what to what they think of a 3ds lite. The magazine has stated that this information was speculation on their part. They don’t know anything in particular and im guessing as to what the 3DS Lite will be.

B-but how? The 3ds is already small as it is, smaller than the dslite. I hope that they’d rather have an xl version, that would certainly give space for a bigger battery and they might even add the "controversial" second circle pad.
By pie on Jan 4, 2012
they will probably will with the circle pad pro pre attached, but this would probably in like 2013 when games start to come out that need the circle pad

Just wondering – where’d you get that information? Is that your translation?

No, someone posted it on the forum I go to
