Pachter down on Wii U, believes Activision pushed for Pro controller

July 16th, 2012 Posted in News, Posted by Valay, Wii, Wii U

Wedbush Securities analyst Michael Pachter has returned with more “positive” commentary about the Wii U.

Speaking at the Develop Conference in Brighton last week, Patcher expressed doubt in Nintendo’s new console. He also spoke about his belief that Activision persuaded Nintendo to make the Wii U Pro Controller so that “big games like Call Of Duty” could come to the system.

He said:

“(Wii U) isn’t going to work. I don’t get it. I think that essentially this is a solution in search of a problem. I mean, somebody had an idea – ‘let’s make the controller a tablet’ – and there aren’t many games that are going to take advantage of that. Activision never said anything to me, but I know that [for] big games like Call Of Duty they said, ‘No, we’re not putting it on there if you don’t give us a conventional controller’. So they gave in.”

Patcher went on to discuss Nintendo’s approach to their hardware, thinking that innovative ideas will lead to success. In the case of Wii U (and opposed to the Wii), he feels that Nintendo isn’t “getting lucky”:

“(The Wii is) gimmicky. It worked, they got lucky, [but] I don’t think they’re getting lucky with Wii U. I don’t think they suck – I just think that they really believe that, ‘If we’re still novel, everything we do will work’. This isn’t going to work. Hardcore gamers will buy them; hardcore Nintendo fanboys will buy it. They could put out a piece of cardboard and say that it’ll play Mario and they’ll buy it.”

That’s why I put positive in quotes!

But the title also says "down on Wii U", haha

EDIT: It seems "being down on something" can both be positive or negative. I only knew it as the positive thing! Oh well. Here I thought Pachter had actually done a 180°. That Activision thing seems like full-on BS, I cannot believe people are still paying this man.

Seriously, this guy is such a dick. Why would Activision push Nintendo for making another controller that has exact the same buttons as the actual Gamepad but without a screen? This Patcher guy is really annoying and I think he’s just a stupid Nintendo hating troll, but one who is actually well known on the internet.

    What is a Pachter?

Anyway, not to sound like a "raging fan", we all know Pachter is just disappointed because of his failed prediction of the Wii HD. Also, I hate it when people always use the word "gimmicky" in describing an experience – motion controls work.

Eh, I’m so-so on motion controls. In 90% of the games, button control would work better, and motion controls don’t seem to immerse at all. There’s exceptions though (No More Heroes, Madworld, SMG), particularl in WM+ games (TLOZ:SS and Res Steel 2).

So I do actually think "gimmicky" works to describe Wii games. And the 3D in the 3DS to a certain extent. As long as games offer solid gameplay beyond a gimmick, I don’t see the problem though.

Am I the only one who found "waggle" on TP to be enjoyable? Anyway, I agree with your post because I have played the games you’ve listed. But outright calling motion controls as something gimmicky is just wrong. Like I’ve said, it works. Does it make immersion better? After playing Warioware, I can say that it does. I enjoy playing games with a wiimote(with motion). But then again, I must be one of those unpopular gamers. Another reason why I love motion controls: pointer controls. (I know, technically, its not part of motion gaming but it was a great part of the Wii experience so, yeah.)

The 3D effect, on the other hand, is something confusing. It could give you better immersion by providing you "depth" while playing but it could also destroy it by being so choosy (soft spot etc.). I have tried playing KI: Rising, SM3DLand, RE:R with 3D on and I must say, they work pretty well. Too bad it sucks so much energy that’s why I choose to turn it off.

Oh, totally, pointer controls are a stay as far as I’m concerned. Although replaying Skyward Sword, as long as there’s a re-center button, I prefer WM+ enabled pointer. And Wario Ware is another great example of a game that benefitted from (standard) motion control. But there’s maybe one or two dozen games that benefitted from it – most of which are Nintendo ones – with dozens upon dozens where it detracted from it. Prime example would be Okami, where pulling off combos became an annoying chore (not to mention that lightfoot move or whatever it was called, with the nunchuck). Throughout the 60-hour adventure I tried and I tried to get ahold of the battle system, but in the end I never truly did. Only the brush elements were fun. Another example? Donkey Kong Country Returns. The roll just wasn’t accurate enough, and anyone who’s played it has missed jumps – or worse, accidentally rolled to their death.

And I’m firmly in the TP-waggle-didn’t-work camp. It was fun seeing Link actually react to you waving around… the first hour or so. After a while I started missing the reaction speed and accuracy of buttons.

It seems that Wii U motion games are all based around WM+ though, so I’m cool with that. Might have to pick up another WM+ controller.

Doesn’t this guy ever get tired of being wrong? It was the same with the Wii. If it was for him, Wii sales would have dropped the second year. If it was for him, there was going to be a Wii HD the third year cause otherwise sales would dropped. GTA4, he said, was going to be the best game on E312.

Get my point? I don’t know how this guy still has a job.
