Animal Crossing: New Leaf free update coming this fall, adds amiibo compatibility and Splatoon content

Posted on July 20, 2016 by in 3DS, News

Update 2: And confirmed for North America (thanks Kobe C).

Update: Bumped to the top. No surprise, but Europe is getting the update this fall as well. Should be the same for North America.

Animal Crossing: New Leaf is getting a free update this fall, which will let players scan amiibo to unlock more content in game. It looks as if a normal villager card will make that character move in. The Animal Crossing figures are also compatible, and there is a tease of Splatoon content. Two squirrels that look like Callie and Marie can move into town, and there also appear to be furniture and clothing items based on Splatoon and the Squid Sisters. Since the update seems to be amiibo-based, they might be only obtainable with the Callie and Marie amiibo.

Hopefully more information comes soon! We’ll update when it does. In the meantime, check out the images of the new content below!

Woah, it’s pretty amazing seeing a game released 3 years ago (4 in Japan) getting a free update with so much being added! I can’t wait!

    • 49ers fan

you better start buying the amiibo cards/figurines or this update will be of no use for you.

      • Mike P

Yep I know I will start buying the cards now!

      • Pachirisu

I have a few amiibo cards so i’ll definitely get some use from the update. If anything this news made me want to buy more cards especially since all my cards are from series 1.

    • Exy

I haven’t been to my town in about as long. I’m afraid to go back.

*checks the date to see if today is april 1st*

inb4 speculation that this means no animal crossing on the Wii U/NX

    • Damian Rasmussen

It could be the other way around that its promotion for both a new game and the app. It’s sure is a better way to get people ready for a new AC game than Amiibo Festival.

      • 49ers fan

this update is done so they can sell more of the amiibo cards/figures.. the mobile app i think we will have another update for later.

      • Nikki Kirch

        I love Amiilbo fest btw.

    • NinetalesCommander

To be honest, I’d be fine with that.
Animal Crossing New Leaf is an amazing game but my only gripe with it is how the Public Work Projects work.

      • ≈ KobobKC ≈ ^.^

I guess I’d be fine with it too. I still hope we get a beautiful HD Animal Crossing game on a home console eventually though.

        • Douglas Siano

An AC game chained to a home console will not be bought by me. It is much easier to do tasks based on the clock with a portable device.

          • ≈ KobobKC ≈ ^.^

Well, then you have New Leaf and you can wait for the next handheld game after the console one (if that happens). I’d personally rather sit down and play an Animal Crossing game on my tv. That’s just me.
The best option, though, would be if the NX is a handheld/home console hybrid and we can play the game either on the go, or at home on a console with better graphics and have them be synced with some sort of cloud. That’s just being hopeful though…

          • guess what? 😉 dream big!

          • ≈ KobobKC ≈ ^.^

            how about now?

    • 49ers fan

this update is done so they can sell more of the amiibo cards/figures…

    • Exy

I think for sure there will be one for NX, but the only question now is when. I don’t know how viable it would be to import New Leaf data into a new game, and if that would be the case then it makes me wonder for what purpose this update was made because surely it would discourage sales of the new game slightly.

  • Justin McQuillen

I still play every once in awhile. In my opinion it’s the best AC game.

    • Mike P

Absolutely… until the next game comes out at least 😛

    • Matt Kimura

What ruined the game for me is how easy it is to cheat in. I guess I ruined it for myself. Once duplicating became possible, the game seemed less special to me as things were easily passed onto each other. Even bells. I played 1,000 hours and I burned myself out of Animal Crossing for good.

I still agree that it’s the best AC game. But I wish they would release updates to patch out the cheating mechanics. If they even can.

      • Justin McQuillen

I didn’t even know cheating became a thing.

  • NinetalesCommander

Whoa Whoa! We are talking about Animal Crossing New Leaf, right? You mean the same game that came out over 3 years ago in the west?
Okay Nintendo, I won’t deny it, I never expected this in the slightest.

    • 49ers fan

didnt expect it, have you been living under a rock?. there have been many nintendo games that got an update for the amiibo. with 400+ animal crossing amiibo cards and 17 animal crossing amiibo figures. this was bound to happen with their biggest selling animal crossing game new leaf.

      • Kaine Morrison

And how many of those are 2 years or older? This is a pre-amiibo game!
        No one expected this!

        • 49ers fan

i expected it straight away when these amiibo cards/figurines was coming. and it even further confirmed it when not achhd & acaf didnt sell that good compared to acnl…

      • Carlos

Nobody expected this game to get an update. We expected the newer games to be compatible not a 3 year old game.

    • Mike P

Me neither, what a wonderful surpirse!

  • Kaine Morrison

Ok! Mario Kart 7 NEEDS an update now!

    • MagcargoMan

I swear in a Nintendo Direct from 2013/2014 they said there were gonna add more content to 3D Land, MK7 and KI Uprising but they never did.

  • 49ers fan

the slackers that haven bought the cards or figures yet. will have plenty of issues, just wait and see.. the prices are gonna sky rocket now.

    • BillyHatcherTheKid

I doubt the prices are going to “skyrocket”. Nintendo is having a hard time moving the non-Smash line of amiibos. Most of the Animal Crossing line is up to 72% off (about 4 bucks including tax) on Amazon, so if anything they might “skyrocket” to their normal MSRP price.

      • NinetalesCommander

Yeah! I finally have a reason to buy them!
Also, it’ll be great if they make other game series work as well like the Super Mario Series and the Smash Bros Series.

  • Yolkghost

Oh god this is a dream come true, I wish they would add more than just amiibo comaptability though. Might as well go all the way and add more content in general imo. Oh well, i’ll make it my task to get Callie/Marie, and if future games support amiibo to get dream villagers I might actually try to get them.

  • Carlos

This is exactly what I wanted the cards to do! I’m so hyped!

  • Mozart Daniel Ayala Fuentes

Alright, time to go buy more amiibo cards!

  • JasonBall

Holy cow! That has to have required some serious programming for an old game thats been shelved. C-stick support for OoT3D?

    • Exy

Or usable controls in Kid Icarus Uprising.

      • JasonBall

Dual analog would be nice, yes.

    • Douglas Siano

C-stick is awful. Both my NN3DS XL C-sticks barely had any signal when moving left or down.

      • JasonBall

Try putting a tiny scrap of paper towel between your thumb and the nub: this creates more friction. Half the time I find it’s my sweaty thumb sliding around that messes it up.

  • Exy

So that’s what the update data option in the title screen is for.

  • awng781

Great to see Nintendo continue support for a 3 year old (4 year old if you live in Japan) title.

  • NICE!

  • DeltaPeng

Sweet! Love the official Splatoon x Animal Crossing.

Good idea on the amiibo functionality, allows a player to more easily get all their favorite animal townsfolk in one place (though may need an easier way to boot specific old townsfolk…)

  • Exy

The North American ad for this shows a player getting Monique to move back in. But why? She’s not very nice.

  • Bap

Wow, they finally made a reason to buy those amiibos nobody wanted to buy.

    • Kristian Savoy

Guess im the weird one, i have all of the figures and several cards..
