Update: GamesBeat’s report has been updated. The author made an error, and actually meant amiibo. So to clarify: over 11 million amiibo have been sold in just the United States (not worldwide).

We have an extra piece of information stemming from this month’s NPD report. Nintendo has confirmed that sales of the Wii U have surpassed 11 million units. Now, even though the news comes as part of the November NPD results (which are US-focused), that figure should be worldwide.

TIME has published a new interview with Nintendo of America president Reggie Fils-Aime. Reggie chatted about mobile (including Miitomo), My Nintendo, plus amiibo’s success and how it’s reflective of where the company is heading in terms of leveraging IP.

Head past the break for a roundup of the various comments. You can also check out TIME’s article here.

Packaging images have arrived for four upcoming amiibo. You can see the boxes for Resetti, Celeste, Kicks, and Blathers above. It was announced yesterday that all of these figures are heading to Europe on January 29.

A few months ago, Nintendo filed a trademark for what looks like a controller with a free-form display. It was just published for all to see today. Of course, we do have the GamePad which offers something slightly similar, but this would be something completely different.

Here’s an abstract:

“A non-limiting example information processing apparatus comprises a housing, and a first portion of the housing is formed in an elliptical form when viewing from the front. A display panel and a touch panel constitute one main surface of the first portion. Holes are formed in left and right end portions of the display panel and the touch panel, and two operation sticks are provided through the two holes. When viewing the first portion from the front, an area except key tops of the operation sticks becomes a display area.”

The patent makes note of a few things, including:

– Using a display panel allowing stereoscopic view
– Can make an aspect ratio thereof comparable to a ratio (16:9) of a wide screen
– Touch panel on the front surface of the display panel
– A touch panel of an electrostatic capacitance system or a resistance film system can be used
– Card slot

Finally, some images from the patent:

The patent seems to fit in with rumors about Sharp working with Nintendo on a free-form display. In the filing, it’s essentially an elliptical touch screen covering the device’s entire top surface area.

As far as the images go, don’t take them at face value. They’re really there just as a means to explain what the patent is about, so the device pictured isn’t a product that will be launched as a final product.

The Game Awards saw a 20 percent jump in viewership this year. 2.3 million people tuned in, up from last year’s count of nearly 2.0 million.

While nothing is set in stone, host and creator Geoff Keighley says that its success likely means that the show will return next year. He told Polygon, “With the growth this year and all the sponsor support, I feel pretty confident we will be back next December for The Game Awards 2016.” Keighley also mentioned that he believes the show broke even this year.

Twitch and YouTube were named as the top streaming platforms for The Game Awards 2015. One billion impressions were recorded on Twitter using “#TheGameAwards”, which is twice the amount of last year’s social impact. Over 175,000 different people used that hashtag, resulting in roughly 279,000 tweets. Finally, the top streaming channels saw more than half a million comments.

As for what gamers can expect next year, Keighley teased:

“Next year will be about adding other elements around the show. One thing I wanted to do this year was a big eSports tournament the day of the show, but we just didn’t have enough bandwidth to get it done.”
