Site updates

Hello. Nintendo Everything looks a bit different. Have a look around!

What you’re seeing on the site at the moment is the first part of our redesign. We’re doing this in a couple of steps. One reason is because NE is absolutely massive – we have over 60,000 posts, and even more images than that. So we want to do things a bit slowly and methodically in hopes of not killing the site!

We’re starting out by introducing the core new theme. Around next week or so, we’ll be adding in some new functionality. But in terms of how Nintendo Everything will look going forward, this is it for the most part!

Even though some colors and design elements have changed, Nintendo Everything is still the same as before. We have the same blog layout. The sidebar is practically the same. We still have the featured content area, though I think it looks a bit nicer! Of course, it goes without saying that our approach to Nintendo coverage is the same. Nintendo Everything has just been spruced up for the better.

One big aspect I’d like to touch upon is that Nintendo Everything now fully responds to all devices. The site should fit your PC, phone, tablet, or whatever else you’re using. We tried cramming responsive functionality into the last version of the site – probably not the best idea – and it ultimately didn’t work out. On the other hand, the new version has been built from the ground up to support practically all devices.

Let us know what you think of the new site thus far! If you believe you’ve encountered a bug/issue, definitely leave a comment here or send in a message. I do want to stress that we’re not actually done here yet. By the end of next week, you’ll see the new site fully realized.

Today is a pretty important day for Nintendo Everything. That’s right – it’s our eighth anniversary!

I’ve been saying this for the past couple of years, but it boggles my mind that I’m still doing this. Eight years is a long time. Actually, that’s about a third of my life.

As corny as it sounds, Nintendo Everything is really much more than a job to me. I’ve literally poured every morsel of energy I have into the site in hopes of making it the best it can be. That usually means very little sleep, continuing work when I’m deathly ill (I still remember covering the 2011 3DS conference before going to the hospital a couple of days later – that was fun), and putting all free time to the side.

I have a huge love for Nintendo, and that’s why it’s great that I can deliver updates about the company to you all each day. Even though there have been struggles along the way (many of which I tend to keep quiet so that we can focus on what’s happening in the world of Nintendo), knowing that I’m sharing my passion with people who take interest in what the site provides make it all the more enjoyable. So thank you to everyone who has stopped by Nintendo Everything over for the years – be it for eight years or one day. I truly appreciate every single one of you. I hope I can keep this going as long as I can.

A little heads up for everyone! If you see anything strange happening on the site or any downtime throughout the day, know that it’s intentional. Nintendo Everything will be going a bit of a metamorphosis. Once finished, the site will hopefully turn into a beautiful butterfly!

Giving this a final bump to the top! There are only a few days left in September, so we’ll be choosing a winner for our second giveaway next weekend in all likelihood.

Hey everyone!

A new month is here, so I wanted to update everyone on our Patreon.

Our Hall of Fame page has been updated again with a list of everyone’s names. If you’re pledging $1 and have chosen to receive a reward (a couple of you opted to not receive any rewards), you’ll be automatically included on the page. Please let me know if you’d prefer to not be on there, or if you want a different name in the Hall of Fame.

Next, we have some giveaway business to take care of. Those who pledge $5 are automatically eligible for our monthly giveaways exclusively for Patreon. Our first ever giveaway, which took place during August, was for the gold Mario amiibo. The winner of that prize is… Corey Buttel! We’ll be in touch shortly to arrange for the shipping of this reward.

This month’s giveaway is for a 3DS game that is very close to my heart: Kid Icarus: Uprising. Everyone pledging $5 or higher is eligible to receive this prize, regardless of their region. It will likely be a code that you can download from the eShop, but we may offer it as a packaged version depending on the winner’s region.

I think that’s mostly it! Of course, if you’re pledging $3+, you can also get some sneak peeks of things like features and certain news items before they hit the site. You can find our full Patreon page and lineup of rewards here.

Thanks to everyone who has supported us thus far. Every little bit helps!

Update: Bumped to the top. Archived version is below!

Travis will be kicking off our second Super Mario Maker live stream shortly. Things should begin at 10 PM ET / 7 PM PT, and it will last for about an hour.

You can watch the stream as it happens below. An archive should be available soon after assuming nothing goes wrong!

Hello everyone! We’re planning another Super Mario Maker live stream for Tuesday. Like last time, it will be hosted on our YouTube page.

We’re currently planning on having the stream begin at 10 PM ET / 7 PM PT. Also like last time, it will be an hour long.

If we make any changes to our streaming plans, this post will be updated with relevant information!

Update (8/29): Giving this a bump to the top. It’s your last chance to be eligible for our August giveaway!

Original (8/2): It’s the first weekend of a new month, so I thought now would be as good a time as any to share a first update regarding out new Patreon!

First order of business: giveaways. Starting today, those who are pledging $5 or more will be automatically entered into an exclusive giveaway for a gold Mario amiibo! We’ll be choosing a winner once the August payments have been processed (end of August/very start of September). If you’ve donated $5 or more during the period, no action is needed on your part – a winner will be randomly chosen. Something else to keep in mind: each Patreon giveaway is open to all regions.

One final note about giveaways: those who are pledging $5 or more are as of today eligible for automatic entry into any giveaway we hold right here on the site. That’s in addition to the monthly giveaways held for $5+ pledges on Patreon. It’s basically two bonuses in one!

Our Hall of Fame is now officially open for business, and you can find it right here. This is our small way of showing appreciation to each person who is looking to help the site out financially.

Other things that happened on Patreon during July (for $3+ pledges):

– Sneak peaks of two features before they hit the same
– Sneak peak of one news item before it hit the site
– Just a Chat in MP3 form

I think that’s it for now. Thank you so much to those who have supported us thus far. Every contribution, no matter how little or large, is truly appreciated.

Nintendo Everything’s Patreon can be found here. If you’re wondering why it was even set up in the first place, please read this post as well as this one.

Dennis just recently managed to get his hands on Super Mario Maker. A review will be coming a bit later, but we wanted to take the opportunity to show the game to you guys later this week.

We’re currently planning on live streaming Super Mario Maker for about an hour on Thursday via our YouTube channel. It may change to Twitch, but we’ll keep you updated before the event begins.

Our stream should kick off at 2 PM ET / 11 AM PT. An archived version will also be made available soon after.

In terms of the stream, definitely let us know if there’s anything particular that you’d like to see and whatnot. There are some limitations in terms of elements that we’re allowed to show (mainly amiibo), but we’ll take everything into consideration!

Hi everyone. I really feel as though this post is necessary so that we can address the state of the site’s comments.

So. Over the past several years, there’s been very little moderation on the site when it comes to comments. As of late, however, I’ve noticed – with others pointing this out to me as well – that things have become a bit on the sour side.

I’ve mentioned this a couple over times over the past few weeks, but I don’t want our comments to become toxic. While I won’t want to name any names, it’s easy to come across cases of this on a number of well-known websites – gaming and non-gaming. This is something I’ve been keen on avoiding since the site launched many years ago.

I’ve touched on this already, but Nintendo Everything is a games website. We talk about Nintendo games. Things are supposed to be fun and light-hearted. Of course, that doesn’t mean there isn’t room for serious discussions and heated debates. But I believe there comes a point when comments can become detrimental, and there’s nothing to be gained from certain types of discussions.

It’s a matter of where we draw the line. To me, attacking and/or harassing others shouldn’t be acceptable. When we’re being overly mean to each other, what’s the point of having comments? Why can’t we have comments that are welcoming to all types of people?

I don’t intend to take moderation too seriously here. I think people should be able to say what they want to at the end of the day. But ultimately, when things seem like they’re getting out of hand, that’s when I feel I need to step in.

The one thing I’ll say is that I believe we should be able to respect each other. If we can’t even do that, then that is pretty sad in my book.

I don’t know what else to say. I’m looking to accommodate everyone. Some people will want no moderation, while others will want plenty. Some people will think that we’re taking things too far, while others will be on the opposite end of the spectrum. I’ve seen both sides of the coin. If nothing that I’m saying isn’t resonating with you, well, I don’t know how to respond. All I can say is that I’m doing my best. It isn’t easy.

Running Nintendo Everything is extremely difficult. It can be very stressful. So much of my time and energy is poured into the site every single day, and I usually don’t have much time to relax. I have my hands in so, so many different areas of the site, including plenty of things that aren’t immediately visible to those who visit.

All of that said, there’s a reason why I continue working on Nintendo Everything each day, and it’s quite simple. The bottom line is that I love it. I love writing about Nintendo in one form of another. I love being able to share updates with those who stop by. I take pride in the fact that many people get enjoyment out of the updates I post. I’ve said it before, and I’ll say it again: Nintendo Everything has become very much embedded in my daily life, and the site means an incredible amount to me. You all are very important to me as well.

I want to keep working on Nintendo Everything for as long as I can and in the same manner that I have been these past few years. There’s just one major roadblock that has cropped up as of late.

Earlier this month, I put up two crucial site-focused posts. Both of them were financial related. The site, and myself in turn, are struggling in this area. The ads we have on Nintendo Everything help, but they aren’t bringing in the type of revenue that is needed to avoid a major change. I asked for some guidance from you all, and one of the top suggestions was Patreon, which I’ve now decided to pursue.

What is Patreon?

Patreon is sort of like Kickstarter in a way. The campaign we’ve set up allows for people to donate a set amount to the site each month. This can be as low as $1, or something higher. The pledge amount is completely determined by you. Pledges can be changed from month to month if that’s something you’re interested in, and you can even choose to completely cease pledges at any point.

I’ve set up a few different rewards similar to other Patreon campaigns you may have come across. The base reward ($1) is entry into our Hall of Fame, which is now live on the site. We’ll be adding in names – sorted by pledge amounts – once the first month has passed. There are other rewards as well, including access to our Patreon feed where you’ll receive sneak peaks at updates coming to the site, entry into special monthly giveaways, and more.

Something I do want to stress is that Patreon isn’t impacting our coverage of Nintendo in the slightest. We won’t be locking content away behind it, and everything will proceed on Nintendo Everything as normal.

The end!

I have no idea what to expect from Patreon. Heck, this thing could potentially bomb bigtime. But I truly want to thank everyone who will be supporting us through Patreon, and hopefully the site can continue on for years to come!

Nintendo Everything is now on Patreon here!
