New Nintendo 3DS

A lucky Club Nintendo member has already received their New 3DS Ambassador Edition and was kind enough to create an unboxing video for all our greedy little eyes to see, and I am sure we will be seeing alot more of these flood YouTube as more orders arrive in European homes.

Yesterday Club Nintendo of Europe sent an email inviting select members to order a special Ambassador Edition of the new 3DS and it appears as if they are already arriving in homes! Several posts to twitter have shown pictures of the glossy white boxes being delivered to some homes less than 24 hours after placing their orders!

If you’re a Club Nintendo member in Europe, you may have received an email today regarding the New Nintendo 3DS Ambassador offer. Some fans are being given the opportunity to purchase the special system today – but not all.

Nintendo is keeping quiet regarding how certain members were selected for the offer. The company would only tell Eurogamer the following:

“The New Nintendo 3DS Ambassador offer is by email invitation only for selected Club Nintendo members in Europe only who fulfil a certain criteria, we are unable to disclose such business information, however we would like to reassure you that we are continually looking at different promotional offerings we can bring to consumers at various times throughout the year.

The terms and conditions for such promotional activities are individual to each promotion, but we will endeavour to bring you more promotional activities in the future, which we hope you will be able to take advantage of.”

Club Nintendo of Europe is sending out an email to select members.

The letter states that there will be a  Special Edition of the New 3DS available to only a select number of members before it officially launches in Europe.

The Ambassador Edition will be very limited and only available through Club Nintendo until January 12th.

This special edition will contain the New 3DS, exclusive Ambassador cover plates, Super Smash Bros. cover plate, and a charging cradle.

There is no word at this time if this offer will be coming to the West.

Nintendo has a notorious reputation when it comes to iterating their handhelds and in the past it has created an environment with a unique set of issues to consider for developers. Whether it was the Game Boy to Game Boy Color, DS Lite to DSi and now the 3DS to New 3DS, every generation there’s always questions among fans regarding the value and longevity of each new system. You don’t have to look very far to see how fans react to mid-cycle announcements like these, but how do developers react when a new system emerges from Iwata’s coat pocket?

We reached out to developers Stuart Ryall, Brjann Sigurgeirsson, and Ken Patterson to offer their thoughts on the announcement of the New 3DS and what implications it has on each of their development processes, if any. Will focusing on the extra processing power and C-stick split their player base too thin? Do these new units put too much pressure on fans to upgrade and consequently put pressure on developers to focus on the new units? How do these iterations impact the overall life of a console generation? Our guests this week help shed some light on the impact these mid-cycle hardware announcements have on developers, and what questions they have to ask when developing with these challenges in mind.

(Unsure as to what Developer Musings is about? Check out our first entry here for an explanation.)

Nintendo of Europe posted a new message on its website with a holiday greeting from president Satoru Shibata. Check it out below:

Hello everyone! This is Satoru Shibata from Nintendo of Europe.
I would like to thank you all for your continuous support of Nintendo throughout 2014!
Thank you as well for always watching our Nintendo Direct broadcasts. I didn’t present them so often this year, but I still read all your many comments made during and after each Direct.
This year, I tried to attend as many game events and shows as I could, such as the Japan Expo in France, Gamescom in Germany, Milan Games Week, and Paris Games Week. In fact, I may even have spoken with some of you at these events! I like walking around game events and conventions like these, because I can really feel how much you all love Nintendo games.

I was glad to see that many people enjoyed playing Mario Kart 8, Hyrule Warriors, Bayonetta 2, and Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS and Super Smash Bros. for Wii U. Even though I couldn’t attend the Manga Fair in Spain, I was thrilled that Pokémon generated a lot of excitement there, and that the TV news programmes picked this up.
