During a tested.com video show, Wedbush analyst Michael Pachter discussed how he doesn’t consider the Wii U to be a next-gen system. He feels that this is one of the reasons that Microsoft isn’t afraid of the console.

According to Pachter, Microsoft views the Wii U “as an Xbox 360 with a tablet controller and is likely going to come out at a higher price point that the 360 at the time.”

His full comments can be read below.

“…And again, I take a lot of shit for this: their next gen system is a current gen system… But people who go, ‘well what are Microsoft and Sony going to do to catch up with Nintendo?’, they don’t care. Microsoft especially is not afraid of the Wii U. They look at the Wii U as an Xbox 360 with a tablet controller and is gonna likely come out at a higher price point that the 360 at the time.”

Earlier this week, Pachter stated that Nintendo will have a difficult time wooing developers to support their upcoming console. He explained that with the new controller, the company has “complicated game design for developers, who can’t figure out if the Wii U will ultimately support only one or multiple controllers.” He declared that Nintendo is “all but assured of limited third party launch support”.

There’s not much new here, but we get to see the controller again in all of its glory. Nintendo once again said that they’re be detailing the system’s games, features, and more.

Isn’t she a beauty?!

Most Nintendo fans logically assumed that the next round of Wii U news wouldn’t be revealed until E3. There’s a small glimmer of hope that new information may be provided before June, though.

According to Reggie Fils-Aime, Nintendo “will be sharing information throughout the entire year.” And although he couldn’t guarantee that an update will come before E3, it’s possible that we’ll get a few tidbits before the company’s big press conference.

Fils-Aime told Geoff Keighley at CES:

“So essentially we will be sharing information throughout the entire year. And so, I won’t say that you’re going to have to wait until E3, but certainly we’re not breaking new news here. No launch date, no launch price, no game lineup. …But we will be sharing a lot of information all through the year on how we will be driving Wii U into households this year.”

Lately, fans have been wondering if the Wii U will be able to keep up with Sony and Microsoft’s next round of consoles. The Wii U may have a leg up on the PlayStation 3 and the Xbox 360 when it launches this year, but there is some doubt that it will be a competitive piece of hardware for the next few years.

The thing is, Nintendo simply isn’t concerned about the competition.

Nintendo of America president Reggie Fils-Aime, when asked if the Wii U will be competitive in the long run, said that “we don’t care what the gaming competitors are doing.” The company is more concerned about being able to “drive a great new experience that’s going to be compelling”.

Fils-Aime said the following during a Spike TV interview at CES:

“So, you know, we’re fortune that we drive our own innovation agenda. We don’t care what any of the… we don’t care what the gaming competitors are doing. We don’t care what’s happening in the broader entertainment landscape. What we’re looking to do is drive a great new experience that’s going to be compelling, that’s going to have consumers say, ‘I have to buy the Wii U to get this new experience.'”

Yep, the Wii U is at CES

As expected, the Wii U is indeed at CES. This console is being shown behind closed-doors.

We won’t hear anything new about the console until E3, unfortunately. But maybe Reggie Fils-Aime will throw us a nugget or two tomorrow.

Nintendo will be at CES this year, as will Reggie Fils-Aime. While the Wii U will only be shown behind closed doors, Spike TV will have an interview with the Nintendo of America president.

Geoff Keighley tweeted a short while ago:

“Don’t miss #CESONSPIKE this Tuesday. The big man, Reggie from Nintendo, joins me live to discuss why he thinks 2012 is the year of Wii-U.”

The live interview with Reggie will take place between 4 PM EST and 5 PM EST on Tuesday. I’m sure he won’t say anything too significant – he’s an expert at dodging questions – but it’s always nice to see the big man talk!
