Comparing Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze’s Japanese sales to Returns

Posted on February 19, 2014 by (@NE_Brian) in 3DS, News, Wii, Wii U

Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze sold 35,000 copies in its first week on the Japanese market. How does that figure stack up to Donkey Kong Country Returns?

When the Wii game originally came out, it sold 163,000 units in its first week. The 3DS port Donkey Kong Country Returns 3D also sold quite well having moved 104,000 copies.

…Really? they did the same garbage with 3DWorld…both came out in thursday, both were bashed by the media, both debutted in second place, both came out near to the realese date of the PS4, both are platformers, both were surpassed by RPG’s…Coincidence?

Well the 3DS is on fire in Japan and the Wii was well into it’s life compared to the Wii U

    Sad but ultimately very predictable.

    That’s not good :s

that’s an unfair comparison. It’d bebetter to compare in percentage. How many wiis there were at the time in Japan and what was the percentage of sales, and do the same with the wii u. That way numbers might come out a lot better and this could be turned in good news for wii u instead of bad news

      I agree.

I also think that DK would have done better if it came out later in the Wii U’s life, because this is not exactly the type of game that will make people purchase an entire console but it is a game that many people pick-up after purchasing the console for something else. With that being said, most Nintendo games have legs, so this game will most likely do better overtime as the install base grows.

I partially agree. But I disagree when you say this isn’t a system seller… I know more than a few people (or a lot of people if you consider the internet) who want to buy a wii u because of donkey kong

I purchased a wii u because of donkey kong!

That’s great, I’m playing it and It’s so freaking AWESOME!!!!!!!! Everyone shoud get this game, one more must have game fr wii u

If they aren’t going to post digital sales as well, then I find this comparison useless. DKC returns, physical was the only option. I believe that more people have embraced digital purchases now. Just look at Miiverse and watch all the various players posting downloading now! when midnight hits. Digital Sales are doing very well on Wii U and 3DS.

How on earth would Nintendo Everything have access to digital sales in Japan this early? Seems a bit harsh to honestly expect them.

      • UHREmperor

Seems more harsh to write an article that paints DKC Tropical Freeze sales in a negative light without stating all the facts. No mention of “will have to wait to see how digital sales factor in”, no mention of the fact that digital sales do play a role in today’s market and didn’t at all in the Wii market for retail games.

        • Rodrigo Coelho Costa Junior

I agree. But it’s hard since Nintendo seems to take a while to give out their digital sales numbers.. That’s if they give them at all!

          • UHREmperor

Yes, that’s definitely an annoyance. If I were them I would’ve built in a daily/weekly/lifetime tracker on the eShop. There’s no reason for it not to be there other than fear for sales that don’t look good.

  • D2K

The Wii U install base is smaller than than of the 3DS when DKCR3D released for that are FAR less than the Wii install base when DKCR released for that platform. So it’s a not really something that is comparable. Not in any useful sense I think.

    • Exactly. If the systems sold are not at the same level or close, how can comparing games’ sales make any sense?

  • SquareSide

I’m not hype about this game… at all.

    • Me neither. And I am a DK fan. I have Returns and loved it, but this entry, while it looks really good, it’s not making me jump for joy. I might buy it later this year or the next, but right now I have zero desire.
