Dragon Quest Builders Switch tech analysis

Posted on January 19, 2018 by (@NE_Brian) in Switch, Videos

A new video from Digital Foundry examines the Switch version of Dragon Quest Builders. We’re able to get a better idea regarding how the game holds up technically, and how it compares to the PlayStation 4 version.

Dragon Quest Builders runs at 720 when docked rather than going for a higher resolution. That’s because the developers were targeting 60 frames per second. Also, this allowed for much of the visual quality from the PlayStation 4 version to be preserved.

When docked, Dragon Quest Builders does manage to hit that 60 FPS mark for the most part. However, you may encounter the occasional drop or stutter – usually in more complex areas. These dips can even happen on PlayStation 4, so Switch isn’t really at a disadvantage.

Docked and portable modes compare very favorably. Dragon Quest Builders only reduces shadow draw distances just slightly when playing on the go. The one interesting thing here is that, in portable mode, the game runs almost entirely at 30 FPS.
