Professor Layton and the Azran Legacies launched in Japan a little more than a week ago. How'd it do? Well, while sales did see an improvement over Miracle Mask, the game's debut is the second-worst in the series.

A look at Professor Layton's series sales at a glance:

Image

(2007) Professor Layton and the Curious Village – 136,736
(2007) Professor Layton and the Diabolical Box – 293,897
(2008) Professor Layton and the Unwound Future – 347,360
(2009) Professor Layton and the Last Specter – 306,473
(2011) Professor Layton and the Miracle Mask – 119,591
(2013) Professor Layton and the Azran Legacies – 130,686

Azran Legacies is supposedly the last main Professor Layton game. One has to wonder what Level-5 has in store for the IP going forward.

Azran Legacies sells more than Miracle Mask, but second-lowe

I feel that franchise fatigue can be the reason for the final game with low first-week sales. It seems that Level 5 was milking it.

They come out way too often. It lowers the expectation of quality. You have to give your franchise a sense of worth, and pumping out games is not the way to do that.

I haven't played Azran Legacies, but if Miracle Mask is anything to go by then sales are down simply because the games aren't as good as they were . To be honest, I think the Layton games have had their day now. I'd love to see a second movie though.

I'd say it has much more to do with it being on a new handheld, that not nearly as many people have yet

Yeah. Miracle Mask's sales were so low because it was a launch title.

Time to pull the plug on the series level 5...The series is getting stale and the sales are an indication of this
