They're paying for it; they get the final say in it. I don't have a reputation that allows me to do what I want. People seem to think "oh he's just a student/freelancer, I'll just make him do whatever I want". I now make them sign a contract with some benefits for me, but it doesn't really change the way they handle me.
Part of it's probably my fault, I'm still learning how to handle these people. Sometimes I give them too many choices so they'll end up thinking everything's possible (and start with shit like "move this 10 pixels to the right"). Plus I love getting input from people, but right now they're just taking that as a chance to walk all over me. I need to exude confidence, without being one of those pretentious designer pricks who knows everything better. It's hard. They think they're paying me to deliver the perfect thing in their eyes, without clearly telling me what it is -- I'm just being paid to deliver my view on the things they need.
I did a really awesome logo for my current client. He didn't dig it. Ah well, at least I can put it in my portfolio.
