Iwata says it’s more difficult to attract players’ attention, Animal Crossing sales boosted by word of mouth

Attracting people’s attention isn’t so easy these days, Nintendo president Satoru Iwata believes. More information is circulating than ever before, which places a limit on the ability to pay attention.

Iwata told Toyo Keizai:

What I feel most now is that getting the attention of customers in video games is much more difficult than before. With all of the information that people have access to now, the ability to pay attention is limited. These big differences occur, whether we like it or not.

Iwata went on to speak with the Japanese publication about Animal Crossing: New Leaf’s success. The game is continuing to sell well, which was aided by word of mouth – communication on social media, people talking amongst each other, and more.

Software such as Animal Crossing New Leaf, which was released November last year, is still continuing to sell well from its initially well-received release and is keeping a good momentum. The information shared through social media also ended up being a positive influence. Since everyone is talking about the game, it becomes an increasingly hot topic for those who are interested in it. It’s commonplace now that anyone can be a video game commentator, and much of the sales are influenced by that.
