Kojima explains why he wanted Snake in Smash Bros.

Following the release of Super Smash Bros. Melee, we heard tales of Hideo Kojima asking Masahiro Sakurai to include Snake in the game. Sakurai wasn’t able to fulfill this request as Melee was too far along in development. However, Snake did end up joining Super Smash Bros. Brawl’s roster.

Kojima wanted to see Snake in a Smash Bros. title for two reasons. First, he believed introducing the character to “younger people” would be a smart move as “there hasn’t been a lot of Metal Gear on Nintendo platforms.” His son had also mentioned to Kojima how there wasn’t a character made by him in any of the series’ games.

Kojima said:

“My child likes Super Smash Bros., so we play it a lot together. And he told me that there’s no character that you made in that game. As you know, we did make Twin Snakes, but generally speaking, there hasn’t been a lot of Metal Gear on Nintendo platforms. So from that perspective, I thought it was a good way to expose younger people to this character, Snake.”
