[Let’s Talk] Which games would you want to see on the GameCube Virtual Console?

Posted on December 10, 2016 by (@NE_Brian) in Let's Talk

With just a month to go before the Nintendo Switch presentation, the rumor mill has been in full force. One topic of speculation this week concerns the Virtual Console.

A report emerged that Nintendo is planning on bringing GameCube into the fold on Switch’s Virtual Console. Super Smash Bros. Melee, Super Mario Sunshine, and Luigi’s Mansion are apparently the titles Nintendo is looking at first. The original Animal Crossing is also being looked into.

GameCube is the only one of Nintendo’s consoles that never saw digital re-releases. So assuming the new rumors are true, which titles from the system would you like to see on Switch? I’d personally go with Baten Kaitos and Baten Kaitos Origins. Those two games were made by Xenoblade developer Monolith Soft, and are criminally overlooked. Let us know which games you’d be interested in downloading in the comments below!

Highlights from last week’s topic: What are you playing? – December 2016

Vigilante_blade

Currently on Pokémon Moon. I played a bit of Super Mario Bros. 3 once again recently, which was fairly nice. I need more time so I can get back to Fire Emblem.

Burning Gravity

well, I’m not sure I actually played any games in December yet, but Pokemon Sun is up there on the priorities list (I think I’m a little after the trial where you get the surf replacement) and I finally just beat Ys VIII

with all these new games coming out and the Switch coming later, I’m thinking of cutting my work shifts so I can game more, or else I won’t have any time for the exciting stuff coming out (of which there is way too much for me to list), forget money~

seems like from november 2016 to november 2017 we should be seeing a lot of great (or hopefully great) games being released, like Pokemon, FFXV , The Last Guardian, Horizon: Zero Dawn, Persona 5, Danganronpa V3, Zelda: Breath of the Wild, a new 3D Mario, and hopefully much more~ (I’ll buy almost anything of Nintendo’s that isn’t free-to-play lameness like amiibo Festival and isn’t otherwise a bad/rushed game, lol)

Melatelo

Pokemon Moon for days! Just recently beat the elite four. Havent really touched my 3DS all year but Pokemon has definitely changed that.
Also just got the Uncharted colection for PS4 which has been excellent. Didn’t own a PS3, so it’s nice to finally be able to jump into the series now.

theFooFighter

XCOM 2 and enemy unknown are my drugs of choice at the moment. They easily stand toe to toe with the best from fire emblem and final fantasy tactics. Aside from that bravely second is pretty sick

For me as a massive FE fan, I really hope Path of Radiance comes to the GameCube VC and I also hope they bring all the other gems which I did not play such as Paper Mario TTYD and Eternal Darkness.

    • Gentle Robot

      paper mario 2 suuuuuuucks

  • Roto Prime

Star Fox Assault with local multiplayer lan!!!!!!!!

  • theFooFighter

There’s the obvious mario, smash, Zelda ect but I’ve always thought the virtual console is best utilized when it brings more attention to games that aren’t as easily accessible or well known. Give me fire emblem, geist, eternal darkness, Xiii ect. Maybe even release previously unlocalized games, don’t even have to translate them just dump them on the eshop and see what happens. Sony does that on the PlayStation store and Nintendo even released a handful of unlocalized games on the orignal Wii virtual console

    • Annie

I had no idea what XIII was when I bought it from a bargain bin for $3, it was actually pretty good

  • Timtendo Gaming

Baten Kaitos and Baten Kaitos Origins. Fire Emblem Path of Radiance and Paper Mario Thousand Year Door would be great choices too.

    • Roto Prime

YES! I’m still waiting for Baten Kaitos DS….

  • Oubie

    Skies of Arcadia Legends!

    • Velen (Not WoW)

      THIS TOO!

  • Velen (Not WoW)

    Custom Robo, hands down.

    • キロ

Wow I wrote that without reading other comments since I assumed nobody else would say it. xD

Super Monkey Ball, Viewtiful Joe, Tales of Symphonia, Baten Kaitos, Battalion wars

  • Oubie

Think about this: Twilight Princess got released on GameCube, Wii, HD version on Wii U and now a GameCube VC version for the Switch to play the game on the go! A gift that keeps on giving 🙂

    • hi v3.0

heeeyyyy aren’t you on Nintendo Life ?

      • Oubie

        Guiltyyyyyy 🙂

        • hi v3.0

You with the toad profile picture right ?
          Lol I’m “hieveryone” btw

          • Oubie

Haha yup, my ever wondering Toad! Hi there 🙂

          • hi v3.0

I mostly comment on WiiUDaily which is now NintendoToday

          • Oubie

I like the community of Nintendo Life, usually comment there. Sometimes here, easy to log in using my Twitter account.

          • hi v3.0

NT has a great small community so you should definitely check out there too, but beware there are a few trolls

          • Oubie

Haha long live the trolls on the internet, wherever you go, they follow. I will check out NT soon!

          • hi v3.0

Well yeah there is a pedophile and a huge Nintendo fanboy and one who curses to everyone

          • Vigilante_blade

A pedophile? Shouldn’t he be reported?

          • hi v3.0

Well this pedophile has a young version of Hermione Granger as his profile picture and he be trolling about Nintendo everytime xD

          • Oubie

            Wow a pedophile? Scary stuff…

          • hi v3.0

Ehhh I was jk but who knows

          • Oubie

LOL…not as sharp here at night

          • Vigilante_blade

Good thing you said it was a joke, because those are some very serious accusations that should not be said lightly.

          • hi v3.0

Some people call him that so… lol

          • Vigilante_blade

I would advise against doing this. You could get into serious trouble for making false claims about that, even in jest. For your own protection, I just want you to understand what risks you are putting yourself into.

Within this community, I’ve seen many people say false things about people, and then people actually took them as fact.

          • hi v3.0

We just called him that because he trolls :/ and it’s a joke!

          • Vigilante_blade

I know, just be careful. I personally avoid any kind of jokes of that nature. They could destroy a man’s life. Troll of not, no one deserves this.

          • hi v3.0

That person also commented here a few times
There was a page in this site and I said STOP TROLLING
and he replied NO and then stuff happened
don’t know if you know it lol

          • Vigilante_blade

Oh, I’m aware of this person. I do consider some of the things he says as trollish, but there are times when he does make a good point and people call him a troll because it happens to be something “negative” about Nintendo.

Heck, I get called a troll regularly when people disagree with me. To me, a troll only tries to get a rise out of people. Having an unpopular opinion does not make you a troll per se.

          • hi v3.0

Well this person is a lot more “trollish” on NintendoToday and I am not joking about this

          • Vigilante_blade

Never been. I admit, I try to limit myself to a few sites.

          • hi v3.0

NT, NintendoLife is the 2 main places I go
I go to this site 2-3 times a week

          • Vigilante_blade

I avoid NintendoLife; lots of fanatics there.

Also, just to finish, even if you consider HermioneGranger to be a troll, he does not deserve the label of a pedophile, even in jest. Imagine if people took you seriously? He’d have to live with that.

Not liking someone is not a good reason to do something that could potentially ruin their lives.

          • hi v3.0

            True
But in the end he is still a troll

          • Vigilante_blade

Yes, but that doesn’t really matter here.

  • Jack Red

I might be the only one who’d like to see this, but bring all of the THQ Spongebob games that were released. (Battle for Bikini Bottom, Movie, Lights! Camera! Pants!, Creature from the Krusty Krab, and maybe even Revenge of the Flying Dutchman.)

  • Jay Bern

If Konami will stop being Konami, Metal Gear Solid: The Twin Snakes is a must for me. Also after getting into Suda 51’s games starting with No More Heroes, I’m really interested in Killer 7.

  • キロ

    Custom Robo!

    • Vigilante_blade

It was actually a pretty charming game. It’s flawed, sure, but it was unique enough to be called a hidden gem.

      • Velen (Not WoW)

I kinda wish you hadn’t blocked me purely so you could see I don’t always viciously and aggressively attack you.

I agree, while flawed, Custom Robo is indeed a charming game. It’s one of my Top 10 faves on the Gamecube.

I just wish Custom Robo as a series had more games.

  • hi v3.0

Never played any GC games so any games is good
I really wanna play Mario Sunshine, TTYD
I just want to see the most popular GC games on VC !!

    • Oubie

OMG really? My very first own console I bought was the GameCube back in the day.

      • hi v3.0

Mine is Wii but my family already has a SNES and PS1 and GBA
I have a GC too but I don’t have the controller so….I just gave up lol
I do have Mario Power Tennis, MKDD and there’s a few more but I forgot

        • Oubie

Ah okay! Yeah we had the NES, SNES and N64 before but they belonged to my brothers. Played a lot on them. Check out the comment of Vigilante here, he has some great tips for great GC games. Get those controllers ASAP!

          • hi v3.0

I’m so busy on 3DS ain’t got time for GameCube
I am 99% sure that there’s gonna be GC VC on Switch so I will wait until then

          • Oubie

Oh yeah, get them on the Switch. I remember buying the GC with Super Mario Sunshine, Super Smash Bros, Melee, Pikmin, Wave Race: Blue Storm, Super Monkey Ball and Luigi’s Mansion in October 2002. Had a blast with all those games! And I had money LOL…

          • hi v3.0

            YES I WANNA PLAY LUIGI’S MANSION !!!
I am still deciding whether I should get Switch next year or 2018

          • Oubie

Was a nice but short game. I liked part 2 on the 3DS a lot!

          • Oubie

I usually buy consoles 1 year later…it gives me time to finish the current console and/or handheld and there will be more quality games available. I don’t have the launch itch anymore 🙂

          • hi v3.0

True true I have a huge 3DS backlog

          • Oubie

In the case of the Switch…I might wait until my birthday in November…so that would be 8 months after the launch. And yes, I will play Breath of the Wild on Wii U and Switch 🙂

          • hi v3.0

Eh I originally decided to get BoTW on Switch but the frame rate…. ugh, and for the Switch IT HAS SMOOTH FRAME RATE EVEN NOT IN THE DOCK SO SWITCH FTW

          • Oubie

Yeah…i’m still thinking about it…maybe i’ll just buy the Switch then haha

          • Vigilante_blade

The smartest thing to do would be to wait a bit before buying. I’m probably going to get one since the pro controller is looking to be more supported.

          • hi v3.0

And watch when the Switch version has 1080p on TV 😉

          • Oubie

True. We’ll see how it all will turn out. But getting back to the GC… I remember having so many hilarious nights with all the multiplayer fun with friends and family.

          • Vigilante_blade

Yeah, I also have many fun memories of it. When I played Melee for the firs time, it was at my birthday. I had three friends over and we did not sleep until we’d unlocked every single character. The game was a rush of pure fun.

I even remember my friends and I renting Star Ward Rogue Squadron and 1080 Avalanche and competing over high scores early on.

The controller too, it was surprisingly comfortable.

          • Oubie

Haha nice! We were also addicted to SSX 3, Mario Kart: Double Dash, Mario Golf: Toadstool Tour, Mario Power Tennis, Mario Party 6!

          • Fred

I loved Mario Kart Double Dash, but after playing 7 and 8 when I picked it back up a few weeks ago the controls felt wonky

          • Vigilante_blade

Personally, I recommend Melee. My personal opinion is that this is the best official game that has even been made. It may have less characters than later game,s but it makes it for it with very tight and fast gameplay.

          • hi v3.0

I’m not a huge Smash Bros fan because I’m a noob at the Wii U game

          • Fred

As someone that’s owned all of the Smash games except 3DS, I think the Wii U version is the BEST version.
Sorry even outside of the number of characters I like it better than Melee

          • Vigilante_blade

You have a right to your opinion, but we’ll have to agree to disagree. I can’t even play Smash 4 without being annoyed with it.

          • Fred

Obviously our tastes are VERY different. Luckily, if the rumors are true we’ll both get our favorite version on Switch

          • Vigilante_blade

Kinda. I love Melee, but I kind of want a sequel to it that uses a similar battle system. Honestly, I don’t know a single person who would not play a new Smash game if it were this way. Better to be fun for everyone than just more casual players.

          • Fred

If they make a new smash that was in the Melee style I wouldn’t play it. I always regretted playing melee. I’d continue playing Smash Bros. Wii U

          • Vigilante_blade

I do not believe you, no offense.

          • Fred

Why in the world would I lie? You and I just have different tastes in Smash Games it’s not that hard to believe.

          • Fred

You happen to prefer a style that has a lot of very hard core fans and I happen to find that style not fun at all. I don’t see why that’s so hard to believe.

          • Vigilante_blade

In my experience, every single person that I know who pretends they hated Melee called it the best game of all time when it got released. They did that with every single Smash game, regardless of quality. In other words, add mroe characters, stages, etc… and they’ll buy it.

          • Vigilante_blade

            Though i want a Melee 2.

    • Vigilante_blade

I’ll be honest, you might even want to try the obscure ones. There’s tons of hidden gems of Gamecube.

    • Supporter

I’m pretty much the same. I did play a little Super Mario Sunshine once, plus I played Super Smash Bros Melee at my friend’s house a few times.

  • Vigilante_blade

The Gamecube is amazing, so there’s a lot to love about it.

Obviously, Super Smash Bros. Melee with Gamecube controller support would be good to help the game’s longevity. As much as CRTs are amazing for old school gameplay, CRTs are on the decline, and old school fighters might one day become unplayable. When it comes to scene preservation, it’s the next logical step. That doesn’t mean I’d be completely satisfied with this, as I want to one day see a sequel that brings back some of Melee’s better features, but it would still be a good step. I just hope they give you an option to have an unlock everything version for those who just want to hop into the multiplayer.

Paper Mario The Thousand Year Door. It’s been a long time since we’ve had a proper Paper Mario RPG in the vein of the classics that started it all, and I’m sure many younger players did not experience them. To me, this is one of these games that need to be experiences as part of gaming culture.

F-Zero GX is by far my favourite F-Zero, and I’m not even that much of a racer fan. Nevertheless, it truly made me feel the speed, and it was a very fun time all around. I kind of hope they do something crazy and unlock the AX tracks that are already on the disc but locked away.

Fire Emblem Path of Radiance is an excellent game. While the title of my favourite goes to Binding Blade, Path of Radiance had good characters, and multiple objective types, akin tot hose you can find in Fire Emblem Fates: Conquest. Path of Radiance was a very ambitious game that was criminally ignored by most.

Skies of Arcadia Legends. It’s an early example of how fun exploring a world in 3D could be in the right setting. I think games like Xenoblade, Skyrim, Fallout, or Final Fantasy XV actually owe a debt to this game having come up with great ideas that spurred the future of open world gaming.

Ikaruga: One of the best top down arcade shooters I have ever played. It also has a mode adapted to playing on an HD TV on the side. It’s not exactly the most technical game, but extremely addicting. If you find it too hard, keep playing it, it’ll give you more continues progressively.

Soul Calibur 2, the version with Link of course. Would be nice if they patched in at least one of the others (Heihachi might be possible, Spawn might be a legal kerfuffle)

Never gonna happen, but Phantasy Star Online 2, I’ve been getting a craving to play it, but it is ultimately dead, so are its servers.

The Metroid Primes. I liked the GC versions a lot.

    • hi v3.0

I wanna play Tales of Symphonia

      • Vigilante_blade

It’s kinda of a weird thing. The PS3 version has a lot more content and some add to the lore. The Frame rate though is less stable. I wish we could have the best of both worlds.

        • hi v3.0

I really want a remaster of the Xenoblade too

          • Vigilante_blade

The original I like better than the Wii U one actually. The characters are very good and the story, very engaging. The setting is also quite original. I even like the music better.

I would love to see an HD remaster.

          • Oubie

Amen to all this yes haha

          • hi v3.0

I only played a bit of the original and I am not going back
XCX spend 90 hours on it and only completed 40% :/ Loved XCX the mechs and the environment is top notch

    • dude,if you have a dreamcast, you should buy PSO + a raspberry PI with a Wireless program called Dreampi, which allows for automatic online play on pirated servers 🙂

      • Vigilante_blade

It might be a fun thing to do, I admit. Getting a Dreamcast cheap though might be hard.

  • JasonBall

    All of them.

    • hi v3.0

      Amen !

  • Egit-kun

Well, I usually don’t care much for VC, but it would be cool to see any of these games:

Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door (Top pick for me)
    Super Mario Sunshine
    Luigi’s Mansion
    Mario Kart Double Dash!!
    Kirby Air Ride
    Wario World
    F-Zero GX
Mario Golf: Toadstool Tour (Tennis too, but I never owned it so I have no idea)
    Super Smash Bros. Melee
    Bomberman Generation
    Sonic Heroes
    Mario Party 4, 5, 6, 7…
Metroid Prime 1 and 2 (Maybe not super interested but I feel like it needs to be there for people who enjoy them)

You know, all the Nintendo stuff + more?

I’m out of ideas, there are many games; I just can’t think of them atm.

  • Locky Mavo

Well these are the games I still have and still play on my GameCube and most, I think, are must haves for a GC VC:
Baten Kaitos: Eternal Wings and the Lost Ocean
    Beyond Good and Evil
    Eternal Darkness
    F-Zero GX
    Luigi’s Mansion
    Mario Kart Double Dash
    Metroid Prime 1 & 2
Paper Mario and the Thousand Year Door
    Resident Evil 0, 1 & 4
    SSX3
    Star Fox Adventures
    Star Fox Assault
    Star Wars Rogue Leader
    Star Wars Rebel Strike
    Star Wars Bounty Hunter
    Super Mario Sunshine
    Super Smash Bros. Melee
    Time Splitters 2 & 3
    Wario World
    Wave Race: Blue Storm
    1080 Snowboarding Avalanche

    • Vigilante_blade

Beyond Good and Evil would be a nice release to have a little bit before BG&E 2 if it actually comes to switch.

  • ShadowDragoon

I still own all my Game Cube games and still play them regularly, so honestly i am not interested if there will be GC virtual console for the Switch.

  • Addy

Okay, I’m going to say some things not many will approve:

    I doubt there will be many GC games released on VC without the use of analog shoulder buttons as the the shoulder buttons on any of the Switch controllers are not analog. But if, IF, GC games do appear on VC, not every game that people listed here will make it;

    – Eternal Darkness is unlikely due to Silicon Knights closing down a couple years back

-Star Wars games may not be available unless LucasA- Oh wait! Disney owns th- Oh wait! They’ve withdrawn from the video game industry, so no Star Wars games.

    – Any of EA games are unlikely due to licencing reasons.

-Resident Evils 0, 1 & 4 will likely get released as remasters instead of the GC ports. Besides, later ports of RE 4 has more content anyway, so what’s the point of re-releasing the GC version?

-Star Fox Adventures is uncertain seeing as Rare developed the game, but Donkey Kong 64 did get released on Wii U VC, so it could happen, but hold your breath.

-It may end up having only Nintendo published games available just like most of the N64 games being released on previous VC services on Wii / Wii U. Oh, and all of the DS games released on VC were Nintendo published too.

Take it with a truckload of salt. GC games may come, they may not. I said it before and I’ll say it again, just wait and see.

  • pokedude14

    Radiant Dawn
    Thousand Year Door
    Kirby Air Ride
    Pokemon XD/Colosseum

  • Supporter

Since I never owned a GameCube, some of the games I wouldn’t mind trying include F-Zero GX, Fire Emblem: Path of Radiance, Mario Kart: Double Dash, at least one of the Metroid Prime games, and Super Mario Sunshine.

Games others might be interested in include Luigi’s Manison, Mario Power Tennis, Pikmin 2, Super Mario Strikers, Kirby Air Ride and Paper Mario: A Thousand Year Door. As a note, I have been fortunate enough to play Super Smash Bros Melee a number of times.

Assuming some third-party titles can be included without any legal issues, I’d want to play both Sonic Adventures, Super Monkey Ball, Skies of Arcadia Legends and Ultimate Spider-Man. As a Sonic fan, it really is a shame I’ve never played either Adventure titles.

  • Wayne Robinson

Ahh nowthen i wondered why the wii u never had gamecube vc maybe costly or difficuilt to emulate but as for switch, eternal darkness, fzero gx are two musts as far as i’m concerned!

  • ForeVision

Lost Kingdoms 2, Mario Kart Double Dash, Timesplitters 2, and Tales of Symphonia, or any other good tales games has my vote. Especially Lost Kingdoms, as I haven’t seen it’s like in any form since I’ve played that game, some 13 years ago.

  • Lolo

I definitely want Kirby’s Air Ride to be released. It’s Kirby’s 2nd racing game (first being Gourmet Race on Kirby’s super star), and a really cool one. Shame that Nintendo has not made a sequel to this game, but there is always good Kirby fun on the original.

    • I’m hoping that with Kirby’s increasing popularity and sales, there’s a chance we’ll see it~.

  • Flávio Martins

    Dead to Rights – Namco

  • Kyle Eerik Turner

Eternal Darkness: Sanity’s Requiem, Time Splitter 2 & Future Perfect, Second Sight, Cubivore (I know it’s uncommon, but I loved it), Burnout 1 & 2.

  • FinalArcadia

There are a lot of great SEGA games that I’d love to see on the Gamecube VC. Skies of Arcadia: Legends is a masterpiece, the Super Monkey Ball games are good fun with friends, and Billy Hatcher & the Giant Egg is a flawed-but-charming little game too. Most of the Sonic games on Gamecube are already available elsewhere, but the original Sonic Riders would be nice to have on the VC too.

As for non-SEGA games, Final Fantasy: Crystal Chronicles would be another of my VC wishes. It’s still a beautiful game that holds up very well with an amazing soundtrack to boot. If they could alter it so that you could emulate the GBA controller functionality with something else (using a 3DS perhaps) it’d be perfect. That might be too much trouble for little reward though.

The first Monolith Soft game I every played was Xenoblade Chronicles… It’s now my all time favorite game. The second was Xenoblade X. I didn’t know until now that they made Baten Kaitos, but now that you’ve informed me, does it matter which order I play them in?

    • Technically? One is a prequel, but I haven’t started it myself to know the difference. But I think the prequel is actually the second game, or something like that?

      • Fred

        I thought they were unrelated?!?

        • Are they? I heard it’s kind of a prequel? Ah, wikipedia says Origins takes place 20 years before EW&LO.

    Universal Studios Theme Parks Adventure.

What? Ok, the game may be western “kusoge” but does fit with the, err, *theme* of the Nintendo World theme park being built there. 😉

  • I’ve been waiting for GameCube Virtual Console for ages now. Despite still having a functional GameCube (and loving it), I originally got it rather late in it’s lifetime. So I just happened to miss a lot of stuff. Like Thousand Year Door, or both Baten Kaitos games, or Path of Radiance. I’ve never even played Mario Sunshine.

There are lots of gems that I did have and play, but having access to a lot of these games I missed would be such a huge selling point for me.

  • Bust A Move 3000
    Cubivore
    Mr Driller
    Puyo Pop Fever
    Bomberman Generation

  • There’s probably a lot I’m going to forget, but. . .

    – Animal Crossing

    – Star Fox Assault (so fun; add some way to have multiplayer, off and/or online)

    – Kirby Air Ride (same like SF:A)

    – Baten Kaitos (both games~)

    – F-Zero GX (gimme dat multiplayer!)

    – Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles (lol, I hear lackluster things, but I want to give it a shot)

    – Chibi-Robo!

    – Gotcha Force

    – Nintendo Puzzle Collection (TTATT Give me Panel de Pon!!)

    – Wave Race

    – PSO (I’d like to try III, even though it’s different)

  • Custom Robo because that game is a helluva gem, Wario World because that is ALSO a gem, the GCN Wario Ware for the multiplayer goodness, Path of Radiance/F-Zero GX because those games are so expensive to buy physically, and about a dozen more off the top of my head

ETERNAL DARKNESS!!! also Kirby Air Ride, 4 player City Trial is tons of fun <3

For me,I kinda miss playing Paper Mario TTYD, Mario Sunshine and the two Baten Kaitos. I would buy those day one if they become available (If I had the Switch ’till then of course). I never really played Star Fox Adventures so that would also be a go,and there was a few other I love like Metal Gear 2, SF Assault, Luigi’s Mansion…
