Rumor: Super Smash Bros. port coming to Switch, timed with remaining Smash amiibo

Posted on November 9, 2016 by in Rumors, Switch

Update: Laura also states that there is no information on GameCube controller support.

Laura Kate Dale, who has provided numerous reports on the Switch, has stated that there is a port of Super Smash Bros. for Wii U coming to the Switch. She notes that the port is not targeting a release window, but rather the first six months of the console. She also states that the remaining Smash Bros. series amiibo (specifying Cloud and Bayonetta) will be releasing around the same time as the port. She did not provide any information on if the port would include any new content such as characters, so that much is up for even more speculation.

Yeah figured as much. I’m still waiting on those amiibos.

  • Hugrazy

Omg, why did I not think about smash on the Switch with the detachable controller multiplayer?

  • GOOD!! I am tired of the whole GC Controller is the best controller for Smash when it’s not.

Only button known to GC Controller Smash Lovers are
    A, X, R, Z and C-Stick.

    • CaptainPleb

Well let’s hear why the cube controller isn’t the best and something else is. There’s a reason 99.9% of competitive players use the gamecube controller.

      • SecretX

Well i can understand why N64 controller and wii controls wouldn’t work well on competition. But i agree GC isn’t perfect either.

        • CaptainPleb

No controller is perfect, but the gamecube controller is the best for the job.

          • Kronos

Why are they? Legit curious, never really understood why.

          • CaptainPleb

It feels is as if the gamecube controller was custom built for Smash. A is central and allows for quick, successive, reliable presses. X and Y for jumping can be easily hit without even having to take your thumb off A. And the C-stick’s positioning and size make it easiest to quickly flick before returning to A. Smash is a game that’s built around the A & B buttons and quickly flicking the right stick. The D-Pad is largely unused. So the strengths of the GC tend to play into the way Smash is controlled pretty well.

          • Kronos

Thanks, I myself started on brawl, so I almost always use the Wiimote. I did play a tournament at Aki-Con with GC controller tho, was pretty different.

      • Evan Gustavson

That reason is called muscle memory.
Smash players have used it since Melee, so of course they’d prefer it over the Pro Controller even if said controller was better.

    • KnickKnackMyWack

I imagine the new pro controller will become the new standard.

    • Yeah, while we’re at it let’s take away the Street Fighter fight sticks from the players too!

    • R.Z.

The WiiU adapter could still work on Switch, actually I would be surprised if it didn’t.

      • ForeVision

But where would it connect to? The dock? As much sense as that would make, I’ve got a feeling they won’t do it because “It makes our Switch look less portable, which harms the brand”

        • R.Z.

          Sure, the dock.
I don’t see the issue since the pro controller seems to also be a docked-only item.

          • ForeVision

The preview trailer showed it being wireless though, I suppose it’d be really weird if it couldn’t connect, I’ll give you that.

          • Taun

Rewatch the end of the Switch video. You can use the Pro controller on the go with just the tablet.

        • Andres Lugo-Reyes

Considering the wiiU adapter just needs 2 USB ports to use, i think it is pretty likely it will work on the switch. it should have AT LEAST 2 USB ports. The GC controller era continues

    • Caleb Robinson

As a GC controller user, it’s arguably the most optimal controller. It isn’t the best, because everyone’s favorite is “the best” to them. Also, you forgot the “B” button which just adds the only other functional button to your list of inputs. So yeah, we do like those buttons, because those are all of the moves in the game ;p

      • Evan Gustavson

And a pro controller could spread those out more if the gamecube wasn’t there to lack enough buttons?
Do we really need 3 ways to jump? using the stick to jump makes uptilts harder without accidently jumping (and upairing) or smashing instead.
I’d prefer it if jumping was resigned to solely to X, smashing was resigned solely to C-stick, rolls and air dodge were set to one set of triggers, the remaining set of triggers become grab.
That would make the controls of Smash even simpler and less needlessly complicated.
Edit: I forgot what I wanted Y to be.
        That would be block

  • Blanco8x8

    So…

Is it gonna be called “Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo Switch”?

Because that would be a very ugly blur between a port and a sequel.

    • Rodrigo Coelho Costa Junior

      good thought…. oh man.
Super Smash Bros. for Wii U for Nintendo Switch is worse hahaha

      • Exy

Ultimate Super Smash Bros. for Wii U for Switch

    • SecretX

Super Smash Bros. for Wii U and Switch.

      • Tlink7

No, that would imply the game would work on both consoles. Nintendo should just call it ”Super Smash Brothers 4” or something

        • Rodrigo Coelho Costa Junior

          SM4SH!

    • rebirfh

It will be called Super Smash Bros. Ice Climber Edition

    • Prayer Police

      Super Switch Bros.

  • SecretX

I hope Switch supports cross buy since i do own the Wii U version.

  • Roto Prime

    common sense really..

  • Roto Prime

Gamecube Joy-Con Nintendo and Switch becomes GOD!

  • Justin McQuillen

I can’t believe Trump won. Unbelievable.

    • link2metroid

      Disgusting isn’t it?

      • Justin McQuillen

On one hand yes, on the other hand Hillary was the worst of the two by a long shot. She deserved to get BTFO’d, I wish it didn’t have to be Trump, but nobody else stepped up to accomplish the job.

        • Indielink

There’s a problem if you think Hillary was the bad guy between the two.

          • Justin McQuillen

She colluded against Bernie Sanders, who might have actually beaten Trump. Cry harder, we’re talking about a comparison between government corruption at the highest levels of power and between a rich guy who “said mean things”.

          • Evan Gustavson

And commited economic corruption and is altogether incompetent.
I’d rather let a criminal take an important job than someone who seems to have absolutely no clue how to do it properly or what it entails.
5 bucks says he resigns out o’ boredom by the end o’ 2017.
That or the world ends, because Trump doesn’t know what diplomacy even is. And the president is the world’s most important diplomat.

          • Justin McQuillen

Russia announced they will restore all relations with the United States. Trump should practically win the nobel prize for preventing nuclear disaster..

          • Indielink

A rich guy who is planning on deporting millions of immigrants, removing civil rights protections from the gay community, and is under investigation for the rape of a 13 year old. “Mean things” indeed.

Bernie ran on a platform of sunshine and rainbows and unicorns.

            Hillary is just a politician.

          • Justin McQuillen

Look I’m no Trump fan, but I looked up the stuff you just accused, and only one of them was remotely true and only if you put the word “illegal” in front of the word “immigrant”. I literally watched a video of Trump speaking a few days ago where he waved a LGBTs for TRUMP rainbow flag on stage…

          • JasonBall

This can only get nastier here. No one will be convinced of anything. Please, guys, stand down.

          • Indielink

Trumps comments towards minorities are well documented. He’s stated on record that bombing ISIS family members was the way to stop ISIS (so he’s advocating genocide). The fact that he chose Mike Pence, a man who advocates gay conversion therapy (which includes electroshock treatments) says enough about his feelings towards the gay community, no matter what flag he waves at a speech.

Hillary has low points yes, her comments on “super predators” are no bueno, but she is not nearly the scumbag Trump is. She also has several very high points, like her work with the foster care and adoption system. I can personally attest to that, as someone who has 4 adopted siblings and 2 dozen foster siblings who have found stable homes.

          • Justin McQuillen

Stop making this an appeal to my emotions, I don’t care about your personal life and your siblings, that’s great, but it doesn’t relate to government and policymaking. Cry harder because Trump got elected and the only people at fault are butthurt “never-Trump” crybabies who gave him a year and a half of free publicity.

    • Rodrigo Coelho Costa Junior

      lol hahah that’s on topic.
But yeah, I also can’t believe.

    • Melatelo

Very off topic but I am so glad not to be an American right now, that’s for sure

    • キロ

The important thing is people unite and do whatever must be done rather than fight, I feel. It’s not the end of the world. : )

He didn’t even mention the wall or Muslims in his victory speech. It was relatively sensible. xD

(Yes, I would rather discuss this than rumors…)

    • Tlink7

Well it is an excuse for me to not take America or its people serious for the coming 4-8 years…

      • R.Z.

He instantly made America dumb again ?
Seems like He’s keeping his promises, that was his big slogan, right ?
        😛

    • bugman83

On bright side at least there won’t be riots.

  • Supporter

I wouldn’t be surprised if this is true. That being said, I hope this ‘port’ is a truly updated version with new characters, stages and more, to the point where it’s more of a sequel than a port.

Because I don’t expect to see a brand-new Smash 5 built from the ground up for the Switch. This will be Smash 5. Same with Mario Kart if it’s an updated version of Mario Kart 8.

    • Rodrigo Coelho Costa Junior

can you imagine? New characters, new stages, new balancing, new achievments, new modes, new features for the online and something like the subspace emissary?

      • Supporter

Yes! Exactly. That’s what I want. Not just the Wii U and 3DS content on the Switch. Add some new content as well!

        • Rodrigo Coelho Costa Junior

that’s a totally legit buy if they do this! that’d be amazing!

    • Exy

      I just want 16-player Smash.

      • Supporter

I’m not sure that would work so well. XD 8-player Smash is already so crazy.

        • ForeVision

They’d need a map at least double the size I’d reckon. Otherwise it’s a clusterF until the first couple of people have been knocked off screen.

        • Exy

The main issue with 8-player Smash is that every player has to share one screen, where their characters can potentially be less than an inch high. Giving every player their own screen can fix this.

          • Supporter

Agreed, but I think that would simply makes 8-player Smash easier to play rather than invite a 16-player Smash.

  • crimsontadpoles

Sigh, delaying the amiibo so they arrive at the same time as a port sucks for current Smash owners.

    • ForeVision

Not to mention current Wii-U owners in general, aren’t getting much more than Zelda: Breath of the Wild as a final goodbye and that’s it.

  • ben

How would you all feel if they allowed wii u owners to download the new version but only if the wii u was connected by usb and the disk was in the drive when it needed to update?

    • Tlink7

We need Nintendo to ditch the archaeic account system first. If you buy a game, say Super Mario Bros., on a device, it should be downloadable for free on all future devices you connect to said account.

      • ForeVision

That would cause them to miss out on quite a lot of potential sales, so I doubt they’d make that a reality.

        • Ragnell

True but a huge discount at least.

          • ForeVision

I’m crossing my fingers as a consumer. But I’ve dealt with corporate companies enough to not get my hopes up.

        • Tlink7

Well I certainly am not going to keep buying Super Mario Bros. over and over again, I would hope the majority of people will not either xD Sony does cross buy, so I don’t see why Nintendo can’t.

          • ForeVision

Well, Nintendo has released some games on Wii-U and 3DS (Smash Bros, Mario Kart, Super Mario Maker etc) that are basically the same game.

          • Tlink7

True, but those do involve a bit more work than just making a game available on the VC

      • R.Z.

That would be neat, it would also be a first between two different console generations.

        • Ragnell

          Agreed

  • Tlink7

I would probably buy the port, because buying all the DLC is pretty much half the game’s price anyway

  • R.Z.

I hope it opens the possibility for several new characters and a good single player mode.

  • Andres Marquez

Thank god, and here I was thinking of getting a wii u just to play this!

  • Exy

So the big Switch news—before it’s even out—is that it’s getting ports of games from older consoles. This sounds familiar.

    • Advance*

If January 12th comes around and there aren’t a bunch of big games announced, then you can be worried. Otherwise it sounds like they have ports to make sure there are plenty of games to play in the first year.

    • Addy

At launch we’ll get remasters of games like Skyward Sword, Super Mario Maker, Metroid Prime Trilogy, and others that came out 2 or more years ago.

When we said we wanted a home console like the PlayStation 4, we didn’t mean getting remastered titles along with it.

  • Taun

I want HD versions of all the 3DS stages. Since Switch is both home & portable console, it should have both sets of stages. Bring back the Ice Climbers. And add the Inklings / Splatoon for real this time. Also an upgraded course editor more in line with Mario Maker.

  • Addy

If that does happen, there had better offer a feature to transfer your save data to the new version. Because I’m not doing those challenges all over again.

  • Coonfoot

I’d rather have a legit sequel with tons of new content, but it’ll be a while before that happens, so I guess this’ll do for now. If we’re lucky, this won’t just be a straight port and we’ll actually get some new features, like some of that unfinished stuff found in the databanks (Ice Climbers, a Rhythm Heaven rep, a Dr. Mario stage…).

  • Annie

If this is true I want all the stages from both versions, inklings as new playable characters and hopefully some couple more newcomers like a rhythm heaven or fatal frame character, stages for the new characters, maybe that unfinished Dr. Mario stage as well, BUFF THE PUFF!, split screen Smash run, more music for retuning stages like ”Road taken (Roar)” from FE: Fates or something from Pokémon Sun & Moon (maybe even a stage from Sun & Moon), Midgar could also use some more tracks… (Decisive Battle from FF6!) Oh, and the game better be called ULTRA SUPER SMASH BROS 4: TURBO CHAMPIONSHIP ANNIVERSARY EDITION HYPER REMIX

  • Dan0709

Smelling right now that Cloud amiibo functionality with FFVII Remake 😉

  • Whodrry23

I really want Smash Bros I’m getting tired of the 3DS need more smash even if it a remake
