Square Enix thinks Dragon Quest XI can hit the lower end of its sales target, hopeful for growth in 3DS sales

Posted on August 16, 2017 by (@NE_Brian) in 3DS, News

Towards the start of the month, Square Enix delivered its latest financial results. Included with the report was a regular call with investors and analysts.

One person asked if Square Enix will reach its sales target for Dragon Quest XI. Regarding that, the company said:

“We believe that we can reach the lower end of our unit sales plan. Our goal is to reach the upper end of that plan, but we believe that that will depend on how sales of the Nintendo 3DS version trend going forward.”

Square Enix said earlier in its financial report that Dragon Quest XI “has generated a great customer response and garnered praise for its contents. Sales have been “stronger” on the PlayStation 4 than 3DS, “but given the installed
base, we have high hopes for growth in sales of the Nintendo 3DS version going forward as well.”

a million units in 2 days on 3ds and they’re not satisfied? god Square Enix sucks…

    • Nintendo South Wales

I know right. I don’t quite follow how sales are stronger on the PS4 either when the 3DS version is outselling it. I guess they mean in terms of attach rate?

      • ben

They have to say this because sony was their marketing partner.

        • Killey

Or maybe because they’re not talking only about sales on Japan, anyone impatient enough with a PS4 in the rest of the world can buy it now, but people with a 3DS can’t do it.

          • ronin4life

They wouldn’t say that. They are 100% only referencing Japan.

However there may be more digital sales data we aren’t currently privvy to that back up their statement. I personally would find that a bit suspect as Digital attach rates tend to be pretty universal across platforms for this type of title last I heard

      • based on install base, the PS4 sales are stronger. Sure the 3DS has outsold the PS4 version, but there are waaaay more 3DSs 23mil vs 5mil PS4, so it makes sense.

    • ben

because they wanted it to sell 5 million. I told people that its sales were terrible for DQ and people argued with me. The sales are really bad for this game. The last mainline game did 2.3 million opening weekend and lifetime was over 4 million. That was only on the DS and it had a significantly lower production budget.

      • Roto Prime

It is the bloody true Ben! Maybe they learned that main line Dragon Quest games sell the best on Nintendo systems now. And stop making them MMO too!!! Dragon Quest X should have been called Dragon Quest Online..

      • Aline Piroutek

If Gamefreak announced Pokémon Ultra Sun Moon also to Nintendo Switch, I would not buy the 3DS version and wait for the Switch one.

      • Gregory Weagle

I’m certain the last mainline game was Dragon Quest X and it sold barely over one million units among four plus platforms over a two year span. I think that’s what Pepperkeet meant by.

        • Aline Piroutek

Despite selling few copies, it is the most profitable Dragon Quesr game ever thanks to monthly fees to play online.

  • ben

The ps4 version was a mistake. Cost more money, delayed the game significantly and only damaged sales on the 3DS. Now SE is expecting the 3Ds to save them and pay for the ps4 version.

    • Game_God

Pretty much, back to the Wii/DS days where Japanese companies burned money on shiny HD PS3 games paid by the huge sales of half backed/casual games on the Wii & DS…

lol no. I dont want the 3ds version and I’ll never buy a garbage @ss switch.

      • ben

Your opinion has nothing to do with sales.

        • Gamingfan

“The ps4 version was a mistake”

well thats just like your opinion man.

          • ben

It was a mistake. History shows that the series sold significantly more on Nintendo portables. The last port of an old game did 500K on its first week and the PS4 didn’t even break a million despite much higher HD production costs and a 4 year marketing campaign!

          • Gamingfan

The ps4 isnt even selling that well in japan and it only just sold less than the 3ds version. portables are way more popular in japan so thats just sad.

          • ben

300k is now just less.. And if the game had been 3DS exclusive it would have done 2 million easily and cost significantly less to SE. Splitting the games fan base was just dumb and only made SE pay more for the same amount of sales!

          • Gamingfan

300k isnt a huge number given how consoles are basically dead in japan.

          • ben

300k is the number one selling game in the US for a month!

And that is a totally hypocritical statement.
Consoles are dead so 300, 000 sales are nothing.

          • Gamingfan

            what game?

          • ben

Splatoon 2 topped the US NPD for the month with 330k sales.
That is a whole month! not a week! And that is with the PS4 having the largest (supposed) active install base in the US.

          • Gamingfan

splatoon 2 was a new game and now crash bandicoot is outselling it again.

          • ben

NPD have stated that Splatoon was the highest sales significantly and digital sales are huge for Splatoon. Still the entire population of the US and all them PS4s and so few switches and still just 330k of software sales was enough to be the best seller for the entire month in the us… plus in Japan the switch sold more than the ps4 for the entire month in the last two weeks in Japan… The US is currently the place were consoles are dead!

          • Gamingfan

do you have a source for game sales in july 2017? I cant find any.

          • ben

            They were leaked on Neogaf.

As for Trash bandicoot the only reason people are even buying that bomba bin from the 90s crap is because the ps4 and the xbox have had nothing but Japanese anime games and Zelda lite for the entirety of 2017.

          • Gamingfan

no idea where you got the splatoon 2 330k from.

          • ben

NPD numbers will be official soon so you can see for your self.

          • Aline Piroutek

            Don’t feed the troll.
Console-only gaming is dying. Partnership with a home console dealer(SONY) in Japan was clearly a mistake.

          • amak11

            Splatoon has legs, crash doesnt

        • Roto Prime

          Ahahahahaha, slayer!!!

    • Sinara Centeno

Yes, but Sony pay the bucket, so…

    • Roto Prime

      Yep!!!!!!

    • ronin4life

The PS4 version, IIRC, was the original. Not that I disagree.

Honestly think we can expect the same fate for monhun world as well.

      • amak11

They were developed in tandem, not at different times. PS4 didnt have strong sales and it still doesnt, and the 3DS being the defacto king It was an easy decision for Square to make.

What doesnt help is that Sony likely has a timed home console exclusivity deal which is holding up the Switch version

      • ben

Definitely. They hit panic and made the 3DS version when the ps4 launch was a disaster.

Monhun will possibly do the same numbers as DQ11 on the ps4, which might be what Capcom hopes for.. I don’t know. It really depends when it launches. If Monhun world is delayed at all and the Switch continues to sell the way it has been, and with the barebones Ps4 game releases coming up the ps4 might be dying by the time monhun makes it to market.

  • Vive

They should have launched the Switch version the same day as the other platforms.

Now that there is that, i can see less people interested on the 3DS even in Japan where the installed base is crazy high.

    • ben

It is not just that. They announced the switch version so people are holding off.
The 3ds version was almost done for last years anniversary and they delayed it to launch it with the ps4 version. They could have easily done the 4 million on 3ds in 2016. The ps4 has been terrible for publishers in general. Even the biggest game in Japan can only push hardware to 50k.. not to mention that the ps4 has already had the price slashed by 25% in the last 2 years.

      • Aline Piroutek

The same would happen if a Switch version of FighterZ was announced. Xenoverse 2 Switch-ver would flop and sales of FighterZ from XONE and PS4 would compete with Switch ver.
That’s why Bandai Namco didn’t said about a Switch release.

        • Velen (Not WoW)

They said they would consider a Switch version if Xenoverse 2 performed well on Switch, basically holding the possibility of development hostage behind the sales of the game. That’s pretty scummy, assuming they aren’t already making a Switch version and are using the “hostage” situation as a bait and switch… Which is still scummy.

The main reason people want a Switch ver. of FighterZ is because of who’s making the game, namely the same team that made Guilty Gear Xrd and it’s expansion sequel. That’s the big draw there. Xenoverse 2 is basically the Rayman Legends of the DB video game franchise, and people are getting tired of it, they want something new.

  • Francesco Gentile

Can’t wait for Switch sales to destroy everything! 😀

    • Roto Prime

You know it! Nintendo Switch is going to be the new King!!!!!!!

  • awng782

The low end of SE’s expecaltations was probably around 4 milliin for DQXI.

  • StuOhQ

If Japanese gamers are anything like me, I have a hard time going back to 3DS right now. With the Switch out, and a version on the (distant?) horizon, people are no doubt holding off for PS4-on-the-go type gameplay.

    • Aline Piroutek

The average japanese gamer doens’t stay on the home. That’s why portability is the king.
And the few time left at home they can also play on the television with the same hardware.

  • Reggie

Maybe learn some patience instead of being an entitled whiner.

    • Tyler Kincaid

If they really cared about the West, they would have it be a worldwide release like they did for FFXV and how Pokémon does now. That’s how you adapt to a market. If they wonder why it doesn’t light the West on fire, that could be one of the reasons.

      • Velen (Not WoW)

Not every project is going to do that. It’s nice when it happens, but it’s not the norm, nor a rule.

      • Reggie

Whine whine whine, that’s all I’m hearing.

The big difference between Pokemon and Dragon Quest is that Pokemon (and Final Fantasy to a slightly lesser extent) is famous internationally and popular, and has been so for years, whereas Dragon Quest is merely niche in the west and has never done very well here. There is precedent to doing worldwide releases for Pokemon and FF.

Plus it’s only fair for SE to focus on finishing the main game before localizing it. The game’s been in development for several years now, I think? Doing a worldwide release would have only delayed it further.

It’s been announced for the west already. Get off your high horse.

  • Aline Piroutek

    Investors:
“SE, snooping as usual I see. How do you expect to get profit of the invested money of the PS4 partnership?”
    SE:
“Pray for 3DS version sales rise 200% and do the port of the PS4 for Switch is profitable(effortless porting)”
