If you’ve played Donkey Kong 64, chances are you’re familiar with the DK Rap. Even those who have heard about the game in passing may be aware of the famous song, as it’s only gained in popularity over the years.

Grant Kirkhope, the creator of the DK Rap, is one of the composers working on Playtonic’s Yooka-Laylee. The 3D platformer is taking inspiration from many N64 games such as Banjo-Kazooie. The influences don’t stop there though, as it appears Kirkhope is preparing a new take on the DK Rap as a tie-in for Yooka-Laylee.

Playtonic put out the following video on YouTube earlier today:

Playtonic’s Andy Robinson, the writer and comms director for the studio, recently answered some questions about Yooka-Laylee during an interview with Game Reactor. Some of the topics covered include the release of the game on the Switch eShop and whether or not Playtonic would be interesting in creating games with already established characters, such as Banjo-Kazooie or Donkey Kong.

On the Switch release for Yooka-Laylee:

“It’s a bit too early to go into specifics with this version, but rest assured we’re working directly with Nintendo to get it out as soon as possible for our many fans and Kickstarter backers on that platform. We’re big Nintendo fans here, so it’s very exciting to be working on Nintendo Switch.”

On how Playtonic would feel about developing a game for older, legendary characters like Banjo-Kazooie:

“The most important thing for the team at Playtonic is that we maintain the autonomy and culture that allows us to create the kind of games we want to make. When working with another company’s IP, you inherently lose some of that independence, so right now we’re focusing on expanding the Playtonic Universe of stories across many different game genres.”

With an answer like that, one has to be curious as to what Playtonic has planned for the future of their universe. You can read the full interview here.

Popular YouTuber JonTron has been in the news lately due to some controversial comments he made in recent weeks. Certain views he expressed on particularly sensitive topics resulted in backlash from fans and others.

Originally, Playtonic worked with JonTron to have his voice featured in the game for one of the characters. The studio now says though that the situation has prompted his removal in full.

Playtonic said in a statement:

“We recently became aware of comments made by voice artist JonTron after development on Yooka-Laylee had been completed. JonTron is a talented video presenter who we were initially, two years ago, happy to include as a voice contributor in our game. However, in light of his recent personal viewpoints we have made the decision to remove JonTron’s inclusion in the game via a forthcoming content update. We would like to make absolutely clear that we do not endorse or support JonTron’s personal viewpoints and that, as an external fan contributor, he does not represent Playtonic in any capacity. Playtonic is a studio that celebrates diversity in all forms and strives to make games that everyone can enjoy. As such, we deeply regret any implied association that could make players feel anything but 100% comfortable in our game worlds, or distract from the incredible goodwill and love shown by our fans and Kickstarter backers.”
