RIVE

Two Tribes just announced via Twitter that their game RIVE will be released on the Nintendo Switch sometime this year. Originally planned for Wii U, it seems like development has shifted over to Nintendo’s upcoming system. An exclusive expansion for Switch is also in the works, and Two Tribes has said that they’re aiming for 60 FPS.

RIVE’s initial launch begins today, and as such, Two Tribes prepared a new trailer for the game. Watch it below.

As previously mentioned, it’ll be awhile before we see RIVE on Nintendo platforms. The Wii U version is looking less likely, but an NX version may very well happen.

Fresh footage is in for Two Tribes’ RIVE, which should eventually end up on a Nintendo platform – be it Wii U or NX. Take a look at 21 minutes of gameplay below.

Two Tribes has prepared a new RIVE trailer highlighting the shooter’s characters. Mark Dodson of Star Wars and Gremlins fame is lending his voice to the title.

RIVE’s status on Wii U is currently up in the air. It should eventually reach Nintendo platforms though, be it Wii U or NX.

RIVE is the last game from Toki Tori developer Two Tribes. The studio has been working on its upcoming project for a couple of years, and previously announced plans for Wii U. It’s shaping up to release in September, but there’s a chance that Nintendo’s current-gen console may be off the table.

Two Tribes co-founder Collin van Ginkel told Nintendo Life:

“It’s very important to us that Nintendo users will get a great version of RIVE, but unfortunately we don’t know at this point when or how we’ll be able to deliver this. There are two main reasons for this, one technical and one business related.

The Nindies demo in 2015 was specifically optimized to perform well in hand-picked levels and didn’t manage 60FPS consistently. We’ve added a lot of stuff since then and we haven’t been able to reach the performance level required yet. We won’t release RIVE unless it’s a solid 60FPS, and if that means delaying it to a future platform, we will make that call and make sure Nintendo fans get the perfect experience.

The market has also changed. The game was supposed to ship over a year and a half ago, and things are a lot different now. Nintendo is exiting the Wii U market early in favor of the NX which means a long tail in sales is not looking likely. So that is the business part; do you release a game on a platform in its last days or on a new one that’s better suited and can reach gamers for years to come?”

When asked how long it’ll be before RIVE hits Nintendo hardware, van Ginkel said: “At the moment I can’t easily answer that. We’re going to try one last time to perfect the Wii U version, but if that fails we’ll need to focus on the future.”

Two Tribes also shared some surprising news today that RIVE will be the studio’s final game. The company “will continue to support our partners and all gamers out there,” but the team won’t be making any new, original projects.

New RIVE video

Two Tribes shared a new RIVE video today to promote the title’s appearance at GDC 2016 next month. Take a look at it below.

Two Tribes has provided an update on RIVE, covering the game’s release date and more.

First, RIVE is officially slated for 2016. While Two Tribes hoped to have it ready this year, they’re simply “not done yet” with development.

The studio explained:

“Since moving to a three man team early last year we had to rediscover how to handle things with less man-power. This means a lot of tasks have to be handled sequentially, instead of spread throughout the team. If we need a new trailer, the level designs stall for two weeks. If we decide to attend PAX or EGX with a booth, the entire project is paused for several weeks. It’s frustrating, especially since it means we can’t let you play the final game yet, but it’s our current reality and we are adamant to make RIVE the absolute best game we’ve ever created.”

Head on over to Two Tribes’ website for a breakdown of the latest RIVE screenshots, which also has some information about the story.
