Star Fox

Shigeru Miyamoto has confirmed a couple of notable elements about the recently-announced Star Fox game for Wii U.

First, Nintendo will be including an optional co-op mode in which two players command one Arwing with one flying the ship and the other shooting from it. Miyamoto also spoke about two-screen cut-scenes in which you’d get one view on the television, and another on the GamePad.

You can find all of Miyamoto’s comments below.

Along with its leaked article regarding Star Fox Wii U, Project Giant Robot, and Project Guard, TIME also put up an interview with all three projects (before pulling it soon after). If interested, you can find the full talk below.

TIME has outed the existence of three Nintendo games coming from Shigeru Miyamoto ahead of the company’s Digital Event today.

The first, and arguably the biggest, is Star Fox for Wii U. This is said to be “at least a year away.”

There’s also Project Giant Robot and Project Guard. Both “are still considered experimental at this point”.

Check out the following from TIME’s report:

Steel Diver: Sub Wars has a bit of a connection with Star Fox. In the game, you may have noticed that Peppy Hare is shown in cameo form.

Despite Peppy’s appearance, the Steel Diver and Star Fox universes are not linked. This is something that Steel Diver: Sub Wars director Takaya Imamura confirmed to Nintendo Life in a recent interview.

He said:

At first, we had some dodgy salesman character acting as a guide, but this turned out to be a bit too shady. Instead we looked for a character that users are more familiar with and gives off a nicer impression, hence we went with Peppy Hare. I’m sorry to say though that there’s no connection to the Star Fox universe.

Rare was originally developing Dinosaur Planet for the N64. However, the project was cancelled, and ultimately saw a complete transformation. The final game ended up as Star Fox Adventures for the GameCube.

Former Rare staffer Phil Tossell spoke about what the studio initially had in store for Dinosaur Planet while speaking with Retro Gamer this month. Tossell revealed that the project “was supposed to be a hybrid of Diddy Kong Racing and an adventure game.”

“Actually, it was supposed to be a hybrid of Diddy Kong Racing and an adventure game. Every level would have some kind of track in it and a race as part of the story. It took a while to settle down…”

One reason why Dinosaur Planet turned into a Star Fox title was because of Shigeru Miyamoto’s feeling that some of the characters between the two were similar in appearance. To say the least, Rare welcomed the opportunity to work on one of Nintendo’s legendary franchises.

“It seemed like a no-brainer. They’re offering this great character from this great franchise! I was attached to Dinosaur Planet but I love the original Star Fox. Our only concerns were how we could fit it into this game we have.”
