We know neither Zelda nor Mario will win because votes will be split. It is the “problem” with American politics that we have “no room” for a third-party candidate.

    • Rodrigo Coelho Costa Junior

there’s no way zelda or odyssey won’t win.
game awards loses its credibility if they don’t.. the best evaluated games of the year, and of history in some aggregators…

      • Douglas Siano

Then you will see the problem with most of the voting systems in the world. Single-vote systems are seriously flawed. Bring change to your elections by demanding an alternate system (which you should research).

Single-vote systems are designed to keep 1 or 2 parties in power indefinitely.

        • Douglas Siano

Here is a simple and fun explanation of why our voting systems are flawed and several alternatives.

        • Rodrigo Coelho Costa Junior

the awards are not decided by the public votes. but I get your point.

      • Justin McQuillen

These are the people who refused to give Splatoon its Best Shooter award that it won fair and square because they “forgot”. And this year Splatoon 2 is only up for “best family game” even though it isn’t even a local multiplayer game really.

        • Splatoon 2 is a nominee for “Best Multiplayer” at least.

      • Zeebor

Game Awards lost that when they voted for Street Fighter 5 and Dragon Age 3.

      • Douglas Siano

You aren’t reading what I wrote. Look at the video series I posted below and you will realize just how easily Zelda or Mario will lose because of vote-splitting if this is a single-vote system.

      • Greenekitten

They’ve never had any credibility to begin with. Here are the previous winners:

        Madden 2004 (over Wind Waker)
        GTA San Andreas
        Resident Evil 4
        Oblivion
        Bioshock
        GTA4
        Uncharted 2
        Red Dead Redemption
        Skyrim
        The Walking Dead
        GTA5
Dragon Age Inquisition (over Bayonetta 2)
        The Witcher 3
        Overwatch

It’s literally only one Japanese game (Resident Evil 4) and not a single Nintendo game. I wouldn’t be surprised if it wasn’t any different this year.

    • awng782

I’d actually be okay with Persona 5 or Horizon winning, as both were fantastic games, but I still think Zelda and Mario were better.

But I swear to God, if PUBG wins…

    • ArtBats

90% of the voting is determined by a panel of judges, and there’s no guarantee they’re using a single-vote system.

  • ArtBats

Best Chinese Game is a category? That seems weirdly specific.

    • GoldenTriforce

They are streaming in China, and China is a quickly growing part of the industry

      • Zeebor

Gotta stroke those egos! Those tiny, pencil looking egos.

      • Radish

If Nintendo can break into China with the Switch, game over.

    • Rodrigo Coelho Costa Junior

      that’s such a weird category…. wtf.

    • Tlink7

Gotta give Chinese games a chance to win something I guess 😛 easy way of eliminating the competition

    • Echocookie

It didn’t even give me an option to vote on that, but I only knew what 2 of them were anyway.

    • Dumdum

Everyone’s angling for the Chinese yuan these days. Even Hollywood’s starting to insert Chinese actors/actresses in their movies because they’re asking for funding from Chinese companies.

  • Exy

It’ll be hilarious if Persona 5 wins any Best Of awards because it will send the message that a sound localization doesn’t really matter when it comes to overall game quality.

  • I can’t believe Final Fantasy XV is gonna straight up die like that

    • Echocookie

I know. It was my second choice but I just had to vote for Nier. Poor FFXV.

    • Princess_Eevee9

Die like the mediocre game that it is.

  • Leonel

Wow this looks amazing I expect nintendo to at least take a minimum of 3

  • amak11

Holy moly, son of mary and joseph…. That’s a lot of Mario and Zelda….

  • awng782

I noticed that they did away with the “Developer of the year” award, presumably because there would literally be no contest this year.

    • Exposer

Literally 2 GOTY’s are from the same developer this is the first time this happens.

    • Oh, but trending gamer and Chinese game, sure

  • How was A Hat In Time not even nominated?

  • Stuart

Great for Nintendo, but only 1 nomination for Nioh makes me sad.

    • Dumdum

It’s simply a tough year for games hoping to get nominated. There are some serious heavyweights this year.

That said, this year is a total win for gamers of all platforms, though. So many great releases.

  • Ryan Hainley
    • Exposer

      Wait we vote?

      • Ryan Hainley

Yeah, though it seems like you’ll have to sign in through Facebook in order to vote.

        • Exposer

That would be bad since many people wuould vot for Horizon just becasue they dont want Mario or Zelda wins.

          • But the fan vote is roughly 10% of the final vote. It’ll still come down to the actual judges

          • Ryan Hainley

To add on to what was already said, it was just as bad on both ends of the spectrum. Zelda fans bashed Horizon. Horizon fans bashed Zelda. Nobody was in the right. Besides, if someone likes Horizon, they’re allowed to vote for Horizon lol. It all comes down to peoples’ opinions at the end of the day, nothing can stop that. It’s not “bad” to vote for whatever you want to vote for.

          • Nhat Anh Hoang

Except they are Sony fanboy who always claim anything from Sony is god send

          • RoadyMike

You think there aren’t Nintendo equivalents on this very site?

          • Nhat Anh Hoang

There are, but they need at least 100 more years to reach the number of Sony fanboys and talk trash like them

          • Justin McQuillen

The difference is IQ level and number of logic fallacies made per paragraph

          • Justin McQuillen

            Zelda fans were right

          • Ryan Hainley

            Nah, they really weren’t.

          • Justin McQuillen

You’re free to flail your arms and reee about this all you want, but there is no debate here, Horizon is just unpolished and rushed shovelware: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aVPXKdSEGNQ

          • Ryan Hainley

Since when is disagreeing “flailing my arms and ree-ing”? And this argument wasn’t about the quality of either game, it was about fanboys being obnoxious and toxic on both ends. You’re a great example of that 🙂 I have played and beat both games, and I thoroughly enjoyed both. They don’t compare at all, they’re wildly different games. “You’re free to flail and reee” all you want, you’re just as toxic as all of the other fanboys who want to enforce their opinions as fact on either end of this stupid debate.

    • Aline Piroutek

No one noticed Fire Emblem Heroes: Shadows of Valentia doesn’t exist at all?
All replies here didn’t comment about this.

  • Radish

I never understood how games that aren’t even out yet get nominated. Especially for Game of the Year.

    • Exposer

      Metacritic.

      • Radish

All that shows is one critic early access review back in May, as well as a pre-alpha user review back in May as well. And apparently PUBG had frame rate issues on PC. So with that being all we have to go on it deserves a nomination? Lol wow must have been a slow year.

        • Justin McQuillen

This whole thing is an anti-Nintendo psy-op, but they’re having a harder time than usual shilling this year

  • I’m expecting for Nintendo to at least get about 4 awards but the obvious was expected as far as Super Mario Odyssey and Breath Of The Wild getting nominations for GOTY is concerned. I just hope Nintendo doesn’t get screwed out of that GOTY award because either one of those games should get it

  • Tlink7

Unstoppable force meets immovable object lol

  • Reggie

I really hope Cuphead wins best art direction. A lot of painstaking effort went into that game, with all the hand-drawn visuals and precision for detail. Also pleasantly surprised to see MH Stories on the list.

    • Echocookie

That’s the only category Cuphead should win. Amazing art direction but everything else is subpar.

      • Ryan Hainley

Felt the need to upvote yourself because your opinion is obviously very wrong? Cuphead has some stellar music as well, some of the best of the year for sure.

        • Echocookie

Fair enough, it also has great music. I’m talking about gameplay wise. It really isn’t anything special gameplay wise other than the local multiplayer. The mechanics were inconsistent and there was a lack of variety in how you approach bosses. I loved playing the game but it isn’t GOTY material other than art direction and best music.

      • Pachirisu

yeah kinda agree. the whole game’s style is on point! both the art direction and music are amazing

but aside from that if you stripped away the paint it’s a very generic game, doesn’t do much gameplay wise (if anything) that hasn’t been done hundreds of times (and better) before.

    • Robbin

I’m head over heels for Persona 5’s art direction, probably my favorite visual style out of any game I’ve ever played, and if it were any other circumstance, I’d say it should definitely be the winner here–

but there’s no way I could begrudge Cuphead winning. Way too much love and effort went into that game. It deserves it just as much if not more.

  • awng782

The fan vote is 10% of the actually vote. Fears of “vote splitting” are unfounded.

  • Bart

To me it’s a toss up between BotW and P5 (and Nekopara 3…) so far, but I get the feeling it might be Xenoblade 2 which ends up as my personal GOTY.

I guess they can’t nominate it because it isn’t out yet, but I wonder if it’ll be in the running for any category next year…

    • André Luiz Zacarias

      Probably best RPG, at least.

  • Vive

Okay Zelda and Mario but please don’t forget to support ARMS and Splatoon 2!

These games deserve all the love from Nintendo fans, especially ARMS for being a new IP.

    • I’m going to vote for Splatoon 2, but I don’t think a ARMS needs to win anything. It just wasn’t good enough.

      • Vive

Personally i’m loving it much more than i thought, kinda like Mario Kart 8 DX is very addictive once you start to make progress.

      • SpectralDynamite

I’m just happy it got nominated. That says a lot for a brand new IP and something as different as it is. I still play it to this day.

      • Princess_Eevee9

Honestly, ARMS is a better game than Splatoon 2 Fighting games are now fun to play in general. Couple that with that amazing Artstyle, Soundtrack, and the continued loving support from the ARMS team I have hope for this series future.

  • theFooFighter

My personal winner is persona but Zelda will probably dominate the show

    • Douglas Siano

How, mathematically, do you think Zelda will win? SMO and Zelda are very likely to cannibalize each other.

    • Princess_Eevee9

As much as I love Persona 5,there are some very small issues that I have with the game despite my hype for it.

  • Apfel

If Cuphead could talk right now:

  • SpectralDynamite

If PUBG wins, then the Game Awards are some trash.

  • ben

Most anticipated… The sony bs hype award.

    • Aline Piroutek

      Most antecipated was Zelda

  • Devlind

No we need the Zelda DLC to seal the deal.

  • Best Art Direction
Horizon Zero Dawn – LMAO what how?

  • Aline Piroutek

    Best Performance:
    Mighty No. 9 lol

  • ronin4life

So you have an unfinished game as a potential GotY winner, Fire Emblem isn’t under Strategy, “Family” and “Handheld” categories are once again used to pen in Non Mario/ Zelda titles away from awards, and what does “best Chinese game” even mean??

  • Robert Hastings

Keep in mind everyone, voting doesn’t matter. So Mario and Zelda already take GotY https://uploads.disquscdn.com/images/7a136187ece103633697a09e2958e5d14ea914005639f278bdba0e79fe82db99.jpg

  • Re4gNarsil

Wait, why the heck is best shooter game no longer a category?! Was that to make room for some other weird award?

    • Dumdum

Gotta get that Best Chinese Game, Best eSports Player, and Trending Gamer awards in there. Have to suck up to Chinese money and Let’s Play fanbases.

    • Justin McQuillen

Because then Splatoon would win again (this is literally the reason, not making this up)

  • Noo Badie

When Sonic mania doesn’t make it for best music lol

  • Cuphead great game I hope win!

    Best Game Direction
    Wolfenstein II

    Best Action Game
    Cuphead

  • Pinkie-Dawn

I could’ve sworn that NieR: Automata would’ve been the last nominee for GotY, but instead it’s a game I never even heard of before named PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds, which I was told is pretty popular to stream on Twitch. As predicted, Xenoblade Chronicles 2 missed the deadline to be nominated, but Pokémon USUM too? I thought it was still within the deadline? Why aren’t both Splatoon 2 and ARMS nominated for both best ongoing game (because of the constant free updates they’re getting post-launch) nor best eSports game (especially more so for Splatoon 2). And where is Mario Kart 8 Deluxe for best sports/racing game, Fire Emblem Echoes (which the website mistitled for “Heroes” in best handheld game) for best role playing game, as well as Ever Oasis, and best strategy game, Sonic Mania for best art direction, best action game, best family game, and best music, and Pokken Tournament DX for best fighting game? And the most questionable category of all, why best Chinese game? Don’t most of their games rip-off other popular games like Overwatch?

    • Dumdum

I think TGA put PUBG in there just so they can capitalize on eyeballs from PUBG’s sizable fan base. Other than that, there’s nothing remarkable about the game, certainly nothing that can hold a candle to NieR in terms of overall gameplay and polish.

    • Justin McQuillen

PUBG is literally the trash PC/Steam players had to resort to when they got bored.

  • wytxus

Mario and Zelda don’t need this award to prove themselves AT ALL. But I will still mad for an unfair result.

  • Dumdum

I can get behind Best Audio Design for Zelda, but best score? I dunno, the music in BotW is very subtle and minimal. Don’t get me wrong, I understand the beauty of having an understated soundtrack for BotW and it works well in execution alongside the general feel of exploration, but taken on its lonesome, have to say that it’s lacking the oomph of other OSTs nominated alongside it for the Best Music category.

All this from someone who practically adored most things about BotW.

  • Supporter

I feel the same way about Fire Emblem Echoes and Metroid Samus Returns. All the Best Handheld Game choices are fantastic, really.
